Hey, great news! It's now possible to transfer ringtones to the iPhone! Hey, bad news! It's a twenty-three step process that involves using Terminal and replacing system files that, if you get it wrong, could easily brick your phone. Seriously, this isn't drag'n'drop, people. Still, kudos to the guys over at #iphone-dev who have figured out the process; I just hope we get a more streamlined version sometime soon!

Aside from the possibility of your own ringers, there are also instructions to change the in-built system sounds too. Something to be aware of is that, apparently, only Intel Macs can be currently used with this process.

anyone attempting this, please write in and let us know how it went.
I tried the instructions, and it worked great.. Put 4 of my favorite ring tones from my SE P990i on it as .mp3 files, and the phone played them fine. While in terminal mode, I did a little looking around, and yes the iphone is really running OSX. File structure is the same.. Just in case.. if you screw things up, you can restore your phone with itunes.., as i missed a step in the instructions, and screwed up my phone. But it’s all good now, with my favorite ringtones.. :-)
sweet! thanks for the response…
I did it and it worked as well! I did have to restore half way through because I missed a step but it worked fine the 2nd time. I found sexyback.m4a when I did a google search so currently that is the only song I have added and it is the full version. It does work as a ringtone but hopefully soon I will make my own m4a files of some cropped songs that work better. :) In the meantime my phone rings to the intro of Sexy Back. LOL!
