Clever and original new iPhone App: iSteam

This new iPhone app is amazingly cool: iSteam. It turns your screen into a “steam” screen, and lets you write messages (as if) on a foggy surface just like your mirror after a hot shower or your window on a winter day. iSteam now available on the iTunes App Store – free!

iSteam exploits all the features of your iPhone (accelerometer, multitouch, microphone, speakers) like never before, for a totally realistic experience!

Check out the video below for this new cool app:

not one to split hairs, but not quite original. there’s another app out there that does the same thing called iFog that came out before this one. checked out the appstore ratings and Fog is kicking some Steam butt.

Haha. They’re both free right now, iFog and steam. This sounds like a classic app store face off.

So, in the interest of helping our readership, I tried both. Steam is pretty bare bones and minimally what you would expect from an app that doesn’t cost anything. When you wipe off the steam with your finger, the graphics aren’t quite smooth and what you get is a visible series of circles. You can change backgrounds but you can’t save anything you draw.

iFog is surprisingly also free – I say surprisingly, because I would actually pay for this one. When I wiped off the fog, I found the line to be smooth and controllable. Sure, the selection of backgrounds isn’t extensive, but it didn’t matter since iFog let me use pictures taken with the iPhone camera as my background. After I was done, iFog also let me save the images, which was much more useful than I had thought.

Long story short – 2 free apps, 1 obvious winner – iFog

Seems to me like ifog is shamelessly riding the wave of iSteam to try and drum up some publicity for itself that it doesn’t really deserve. iFog looked to me like nothing more than a chalky screen with none of the realistic steamy effects or water droplets that make iSteam stand out. Perhaps the fact that ifog is NOW free (when it wasn’t before) shows how the guy that made it realises its worth. Whereas I’d definitely pay more than a dollar for iSteam…
