Cleaning the iPhone: Do Not Use Glass Cleaner!

Ryan is very proud of the video he produced on how to clean the iPhone. Unfortunately, Apple clearly stated not to use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean iPhone. It has always been common sense (at least for me) to steer clear of any and all of the cleaning solutions mentioned above when cleaning the screens of my phones or laptops.

Cleaning the iPhone: Do Not Use Glass Cleaner!

These cleaning solutions may end up eating away at the protective coating, resulting in you doing more harm than you think. Click over for video.

  2. sgrizzle says:

Yeah, how about insturction on how to clean it, not how not to. My iphone cloth is too dirty to work anymore.

It’s as important to know the risk of improperly maintaining your iPhone. Obviously, Ryan is passing along misinformed tips.

I hope you warned Ryan in addition to thanking him for the video…

Thanking Ryan is a courteous gesture. We thank everyone for sending in news tips. But yes, he’s been notified by my intern.

Since I always bring my iPhone into the bathroom and lay it safely on the counter (where it can’t get wet) while I shave and shower. It seemed only natural to use my damp towel after my shower to wipe off the phone. Meets Apple’s requirements (damp soft cloth) and takes little time and does a great job.

-Is- there a protective coating, beyond the glass itself? Such as a UV coating?

I thought I remembered reading about this particular touch screen technology a few months back, when the iPhone was still a rumor– its big plus was that the actual sensors was BELOW glass itself, embedded in the glass.

You could hazard a quick daily wipe with alcohol, which cuts crease quickly, or rub the iphone into oblivian on your t shirt several times a day, eventually finding something abrasive enough to make a dent.

The problem is worse with plastic, and lenscrafters will for example, tell you never to use glass cleaners on their lenses, but they are also trying to sell you a bit of soapy water for a several thousand percent markup.

One danger of using alcohol, windex,if anything else IS in solution with the product, it will leave a residue. Dont’ wipe your face, then wipe your iPhone, with alcohol, or you are just leaving your face grease in a special layer on the phone.

one word — invisibleSHIELD — technically two words squoooooshed into one :).

  9. troglodite says:

GAWD, was this Ryan dude paid by Glass Plus to make this video? Wasn’t it enough to pay for much better lighting?

Ship, even the Silent Film part doesn’t make sense — the noise was overwhelmng — maybe he filmed it at some disco club or something? And the torn sheets of paper? Why didn’t he use baby wipes — alcohol and fragrance free — he could get a case of the things at Sam’s Club FCS.

If you aren’t freekin supposed to use this stuff on the iPhone screen, fhy the wuck did he make the video? Kinda like, see, we were really saying something you didn’t think we were saying, despite the fact that we said something else…cough…these aren’t the droids you’re looking for

Was he fired and is now on the Fox News staff? Inquiring minded peeps wanna know

This guy Ryan had the audacity to call me up on my mobile —- it’s now near midnight – demanding I take down this article! The balls! Just so you know Ryan, I’ve only taken down ONE article in the last six years of running this business.

  11. Ryan Thomas says:

“Just so you know Ryan, I’ve only taken down ONE article in the last six years of running this business”.

    um work on your grammar?

This sentence does not make sense. I can tell you dont write your articles.

Your Asian right, makes sence then.

  12. Ryan Thomas says:

FYI I thinks its wise to remove the video so people dont go messing up their phones im not demanding in any way. Thats fine leave it but i agree with the people above writing an article on what not to do to your phone is stupid. I did not know that it would be harmful when my friend made the video. Again i apologize.

So you’re an idiot and a racist? You’re now saying that because I’m Asian, I don’t make sense and cannot write? Also, you’re making a huge accusation that I don’t write my own articles? You definitely don’t want to go down this road.

  14. troglodite says:

    “um work on your grammar?”

Ryan, thou castest the first stone, stoned?

“I can tell you DONT write your articles. / makes SENCE then.”

Kewl web site you have, I must say — is the ENTER just a teaser? Where are all the super sexy shots? Head shots, huh? And the font in your resume is soooo teensy they are unreadable.

Hey, man, I didn’t go to acting school and made my first video about a week ago with an entirely new camera — me in bed with SIX — now THAT’s sexy! Why does Ryan wear suspenders?

I luv yeah, Ryan — keep up the great work

  15. CandyCGIZ says:

    Hey Ryan,

it’s “You’re Asian right?” not “your asian right”
So, may i say “Your an idiot” or “You’re an Idiot?” pick one dumbass
That is why you are still a celebrity wanna be, grow up and get a real job

  16. troglodite says:

For anyone who’s interested in finding more about this moronic — Ryan Thomas, here’s his info:

GOSHERS, anybody who has used a computer gadget for more than 3 weeks could have gotten to his really well made NON maroonic web site by clicking on his name, which your guestbook so gratuitously provides.

He has a super kewl look about him, and his URL provides all sorts of neato stuff, nicht wahr?

Hey, even YOU look way kewler than Jay Leno, if I must say so myself — on the other paw, I am just an extinct cave dweller who hasn’t yet invented the [scroll] wheel.

I have used three DIFFERENT URLs for my handle — you may have noticed?

  17. troglodite says:

it’s “You’re Asian right?” not “your asian right”

    BUZZZZZZZZ — WRONG ANSWER …

it SHOULD be — You’re Asian, right? The other version might suggest that Vinny is right winged, you know, from the red states or something — he looks kinda moderately liberal to me somehow.

Gosh, this younger generation must have had really dofus English teachers or something. I bet they can’t do square roots without a calculator either.

Unless they are of Asian descent, naturally, and maybe home schooled.

  18. Ryan Thomas says:

I want to say. Im not raciest in any way and Im a very hard working actor as you all know now. Vincent Im sorry. k Cool. I suck at grammar. No I mean im really bad. As you can tell.

Honestly yea im a moron when it comes to technology. I really dont care.

Im just a guy who made a mistake.

For any one who use glass cleaner on you iPhone, read the article above.

    Good night

-You all can continue to bash on me and give me more hits on my website.

Trying to do some damage control eh? No one likes racist actor! Your post above shows that you are one racist prick. People like you make me sick!

  20. troglodite says:

Don’t think anything of it, Ryan, I have used 409 Glass & Surface Cleaner on every monitor I ever had, including the original eMac, the last eMac, the TiBook screen and now on my 1st version iMac G5 screen without ill effects of any sort. Even used it on the Cube exterior, my scanner platten — oh, but I don’t do Windows, sorry about that.

I might try baby wipes to see if they also do a good job — hey, if you read my iPhone story, you would have noticed that I played with an iPhone for 30+ minutes [with CLEAN hands] and didn’t see any prints or anything else on the screen — I really doubt that I would use one while eating pizza and stuff like that.

” You all can continue to bash on me and give me more hits on my website.”

I wasn’t bashing you, Ryan, just making observations — don’t bang the messenger. I wish you the bestest luck in your chosen career — Hals und bein brech! ¡Que tengas MUCHO éxito!

  21. Cleaning the iPhone: Suggest any method to a friend to try first. If it doesn’t seem to be working out all that well, tell him to rub harder while you make a speedy getaway.

  22. Steve says:

So I’m one of the idiots that used Monitor Wipes with alcohol to clean my iphone. Is it really that bad if I did it once? Could I have messed anything up already?

  23. The AWCF (Australian Window Cleaning Federation) is the National Trade Association for professional window cleaners. Plenty of information and resources at the AWCF website: window cleaning .

  24. This can be a nice and useful article. There are a lot of new associates and we will all use these sort of suggestions to help with the educational curve.

  25. Wonderful page, I like how the website looks! The type is terrific!
