It turns out that Microsoft really isn't worried about the iPhone. They have their own secret weapon, a big-ass table.

All humor aside, the Surface is a revolutionary product that shows us just how important touchscreens are going to be in the future. With a hefty price like $10,000 we probably won't see these popping up all over the place, but I think it shows us where technology is headed.

The future is here. It's not an iPhone, it's a big-ass table. Take that Apple.

The Surface technology isn’t a “revolutionary product” by any means. Not because what was shown wasn’t good, but because it amounted to little more than whiz-bang performance art… the end product is certainly wonderful, but the preparation for such a demonstration is wholly impractical for normal use. Phones, credit cards, cups, and such do not “automatically” identify themselves to the table, they need to be tagged. Only “fingers” require no prep-time. As such, this isn’t a “product” worth boasting or arguing over. It’s a “big ass table” that takes a lot of time and instruction to set up and just might rival the Optimus Keyboard as the “no show” of 2007,2008, and 2009. With all of its moving internal parts and sensor alignment issues, it’s going to be scarier than moving a projection TV. I’m sorry, but I like a good presentation as much as the next guy, but I’m terribly practical about what I’ll clap to.
