What a great web log. I spend hours on the internet reading blogs, about tons of various themes. I have to first of all give congratulations to whoever built your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an incredible post. I honestly think there is a skill to writing articles that only very few posses and honestly you have it. The combination of enlightening and quality content is by all odds highly infrequent with the massive amount of blogs on the cyberspace.

I bought the west coast version of this app last week and have been enjoying it - the graphics are awesome and it works fairly well - its not perfect but it appears they have pulled it from the app store to add improvements to it and will be putting it back in the app store soon - according to their website.

It is really annoying when people say that it does not include turn by turn voice directions - that is due to Apple's limitations on the iphone - not the developer of the application people!!

I have this app on my phone. It actually works quite well, and I think the early troubles have largely been addressed. I can search for Points of Interest and everything is in there. Once I find what I am looking for, hit go and it calcs the route. No more interaction needed.

At first it wasn't tracking my route very well and would often think I was on the wrong street even though I wasn't. By putting the phone in a cradle which has a view of the sky it has fixed this and it actually tracks very well now, and seems to track better even than the built-in maps app.

One thing that NEEDS to be sorted, and BADLY: it is sometimes absolutely retarded with the directions it gives. For example, on a route where there is a highway available to get there, it sometimes opts for small side streets. And no I haven't turned on highway avoidance, and yes I have it set for "Fastest Route" vs shortest route. Unlike most directions you will find (Google maps, name brand GPS units, etc), it doesn't seem to understand that main roads and highways are usually the quickest way to get around. This leads me to believe it is not aware of speed limits on various roads. The way it gives directions, it would have you waiting at countless stop signs and long lights, waiting to cross or turn left onto a main road which you should have been on in the first place.

As for splitting into two halves of the country, yes it would be supremely annoying for anyone who lived near the split. I'd advise those people to look elsewhere for sure. For the rest of us, its not a big deal... I mean, if you are driving across the country, you can't take 30 seconds to close one app and open another? Really? I drove from MA to CO using GPS guidance, and only really had the thing on about 5 mins before hitting a major city, then off again after through the city, just to be sure I stayed on the correct road. It isn't necessary to have GPS guidance telling you to make a right turn in 863 miles.

Obviously voice guidance would be very helpful, but I know it's not really the developer's fault that it isn't there.

Features NOT included which I would like to see:

-Improved routing
-Traffic awareness and avoidance
-Some kind of notification of an upcoming instruction, even a beep or something
-An option to disable sleep mode within the app, so I don't have to do it in the settings each time I use the app. Is this also against Apple's sandbox rules for official apps?
-Night mode (actually not sure if this is included as I haven't tried it at night yet)
-ETA/ETE display

Yes, and for those idiots, oops, customers from chosen few states, you get the WHOLE HALF of your state! Like Illinois, for instance. OK, so, let me repeat, this app(s) is the grandest P.O.S. since the days of "the Earth is flat" days.

Your comments about changing the map application, or sending the route by internet are all true an valid. If you are from the US.

I am however from europe and travel often to the US for vacation. I am very glad that the maps are included in this app. Because For me, the roaming charges for internet connections outside my home contry are huge. So thumps up for this!

What if I want to drive from Maryland to Colorado? I can't use this program because it splits east and west as two separate programs. This is unacceptable.
There should be one program. At least do it like AT&T Navigator where the mapping solution is determined via internet and then sent to the device. That way we wouldn't need to store 2GBytes of map data on the iPhone. It's a good start. But certainly not worth 40 dollars to have both east and west, and yet still not be able to map from one side to the other. I'm disappointed. Still waiting for the AT&T Navigator like application to come out.

I have been using G-Map East since it was released. The update on Feb. 7 cured the early problems and it truly is the only turn-by-turn driving application on iTunes at this time. Only the addition of voice prompts will be needed to complete it. The application uses NavTeq maps and works as advertised plus there is a quick start guide and users guide on the Xrosd website.
