If you are smart you will jailbreak your iPhone and use xGPS. It's very good for a free app and uses Google maps to give turn by turn directions. Jailbreaking opens your iPhone to do all the things you only complain about in these forums. Tethering? Got it. Skype over 3G? got it. It's amazing.

I read the reviews for G-map and they are pretty negative. I'll wait for something decent.

TomTom app is not first navigation app in app store.
There is G-map which is the first navigation app in app store.
I know TomTom has voice prompts and G-map doesn't.
But i heard G-map also is going to add voice prompts and TBT etc in this summer.
I will update the review when i get TomTom.
THank you.

Id like to see Garmin create a GPS app for the iphone. Anyone who knows real GPS (for example aviation which is my profession) knows Tom Tom is not even close. The $150k EFIS in my aircraft is Garmin. Why people spend real $ on a mickey mouse, joke like TomTom GPS is byond me. Americans fall for advertising time and time again. Research and you will learn.

I agree the google maps is not that perfect. But to make it easier and avoid accidents you could read in advance what road you gonna take. I am really surprise they didn't make a gps app yet.

Let's hope the Tom Tom GPS app gets released soon. I was in NYC recently trying to find my way from New Jersey to Uniondale in Long Island, I practically crashed my car trying to follow the Apple purple dot. The current GPS system is not practical unless you are on a suicide mission trying to crash your car on the highway.

BB - There is a blue target button on the bottom left of your screen that tracks your position while moving. It took me a while to figure out how to do that without having to scroll as well. It is also the button that finds your current position as well. As far as turn by turn navigation, that's the reason why I'm on this post. I don't think anything has been officially released. I agree after learning how to use the current GPS app. that the bigger problem is learning how to follow that purple line while driving without warning that the turn is coming up ahead.

any more news on the TOM TOM release??? is it going to come out anytime soon????

I just got the 16GB and I am really liking this phone.... I already use the maps app... but having to hold the phone and manually locate myself on the map is a little annoying. Is there a way to keep the screen centered on where I am without having to manualy scroll while driving??? I would prefer to keep my eyes on the road and my hands on the wheel while driving. I have been lucky so far but I am pretty sure that if a cop sees me do this I will get a ticket for using my cell phone....

I REALLY NEED turn by turn navigation for my iphone... are there any opther apps other than the mentioned TOMTOM software available for this???

Well I think that iphone sdk agreement already conflicts with gps usage along with google maps. If you watch the wwdc keynote. Steve shows real time gps signal as they drove the car in san fran. All tom tom would do is make that format 3d with more detail and voice guidance. Which would make it safer with a car mount. It would be nuts for apple not to let tom tom do this. This is going to be revolution for cell phones. I have a 8 gig now I just delete the podcast when I am done. I put new music on it when I get tired of the stuff I have on there. Delete movies and shows when I am done. But If I have a bunch of applications on there all the time, I am going to have to upgrade to the 16gb.

I think if you interpret the SDK statement: it means you cannot develop programs that act as artificial intelligence using the GPS. So the TomTom software is okay in that regards. It gives driving information BASED on the GPS, but does not ACTUALLY DRIVE the vehicles. Also I believe the statement was part of the Google Maps interaction. To cover their butts if their maps are accurate. There have been idiots who've driven into lakes or whatnot on the instructions of a PND (personal navigation device). I'm sure if someone did that with a iPhone, they would sue and it would be big news.
