LG Electronics finally made the PRADA phone official. As we all know, the PRADA phone is all touch interfaces using Synaptics™ ClearPad (capacitive touch screen) technology.

I personally think the PRADA phone will give the iPhone a run for its money. It's sleek and super thin (at just 12 mm). The handset's music player supports various formats such as MP3, ACC, ACC+, WMA, RA, music multitasking (messaging), while the video player supports formats such as MPEG4, H.263 and H.264. The user interface utilizes Macromedia Flash (which I believed was developed by Pilotfish). And for business users, you'll be pleased to know all your powerpoint, documents, spreadsheets, pdf files and text files will be easily viewed on the PRADA phone.

Unlike the iPhone, the PRADA is only EDGE Tri-Band (900/1800/1900). It does feature a 2M CMOS camera with integrated LED Flash. Theres an external Micro SD memory slot for memory expansion. The company didn't disclose the size of the internal storage space (boo! since the iPhone comes in 4 and 8GB). The other downer is the battery its only got 800mAh. For a graphics intensive handset, this is barely enough to keep it going for a few hours, not to mention playing videos and listening to music! My Treo 750 has a 1200mAh battery on it, and as it stands right now, I can barely get through 5 hours of total usage on it.

The price of EUR 600 will put a dent in your pocket book! If you don't mind paying the price and happens to live (or knows someone) in UK, France, Germany or Italy, you'll be able to get your mitts on one late February. Folks in Asia such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore will be able to get theirs late March 2007. Finally, the Korean version is scheduled for launch in the second quarter of 2007. Wait a minute; I don't remember writing anything about it being available stateside! What gives? What are we chop liver? Are we not good enough to have the PRADA phone?

I love the form factor of KE 850. But I would like it to have WM OS Crossbow, the camera should be 4 to 5 mp with autofocus and flash, WiFi and a workable version of GPS.
Last but not least, keep the touchscreen and a universal attainable price.

It’s hard to say how good WM Crossbow will be since it’s not release yet. The camera on the iPhone and prada phone aren’t regular digital cameras. They’re CMOS - a higher grade used in higher end cameras. I agree on the GPS and keeping the price down. The Onyx Concept phone shows potential integration down the road.

Eek. Ok, let’s be honest about comparisons here.
Apple iPhone will cost $499 and $599. Conversely, LG’s Prada phone (KE850) will start at over $776 USD (converted from euros). START… AT. Gulp. If the videos on YouTube are any indication, the interface is pretty hurky-jerky. Nice snag on grabbing a high-profile style brand to push it with. Real smart move (chic style brand vs. geek style brand), but… lacking “cover flow”, visual voice-mail, blazing fast interface, and an adaptable full-featured web browser will certainly kick LG in the pants. And scrollbars…?? No thanks.

I get the impression though, that everyone wanting an iPhone outside of the US market might consider settling for this one as a consolation.

Sorry LG, but the days of the basic progress bars and text for music players are pretty much on the way out. Give us album art, slick animations, and snappy (responsive) interfaces already.

Well, if we’re gonna be honest about comparisons here, let’s first look at the cost of an item that is available in both the US and say the UK. I think the Apple 30 GB iPod video (5.5 generation) is a good candidate for this, it retails for $249.99 in the US. In the UK it retails for £166.00, converted into US dollars that’s $327.99. Wait a minute, this is an identical product, made by the same company, for the same cost, how could it possibly have a 31.2% increase in cost just because it’s being sold on a seperate continent? I mean Eek. *gulp*

I watched both videos, and what you call “hurky-jerky” looks to be standard transitional animation, the iPhone has it too, perhaps you were mesmerized by it.

I agree, Prada is a great brand name to attach to a highend phone. As for lacking visual voice-mail, just because it wasn’t demonstrated, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have it (it was just some French guy demonstrating his personal one after all). Blazing fast interface, I’m not seeing the problem you are, infact, the interfaces look identical when it comes to speed. Web browser, once again, just because it wasn’t demonstrated, what makes you think it’s not in there? And finally, scrollbars are convient when you need to know where you are in a list, otherwise it’s kinda like being in the city with no map. If you’ve driven the area for years, you have no problem finding your way, but if you’re looking for something you’ve never seen, you could get lost.

Well, the iPhone has a basic progress bar and text when you flip the album art over, so what makes you think the guy who was demonstrating his phone just didn’t bother to show you his album art? Finally, the Prada had animations, those were the things that you thought made the phone hurky-jerky, and it seemed pretty “snappy” with the interface too. Perhaps we didn’t watch the same video.

The fact the the Prada phone can be used with one hand is big improvement over the iPhone which has to be used with two hands.

The 31% price diff that Joe is referring to, might be caused by the fact that European prices typically includes VAT/MWSt/BTW (kinda like a sales tax) that easily jumps to 20% in a lots of European countries.

The US, on the other hand, always lists prices excluding sales tax, which is usually quite low (~7%) or non-existent (online shopping).

For what the PRADA phone offers - the price is too high. My biggest concern is battery life - 800mAh isn’t going to get me very far. Also, the new touch-screen technology is still unknown as to how much power it consumes.

What are you guys all talking? The Prada phone will be a lot cheaper then Iphone, the Iphone will be about 1000Euro without contract and the LG850 will be only 600 Euro without contract. I will buy the Prada phone then.

I desperately WANT the Prada LG KE850, but I cannot get it if its not associated with Sprint PCS. Please do something…… Also, what will it cost?

11 Vincent Nguyen 01.31.07 at 5:37 pm

The Prada phone is GSM and will not work on a CDMA network such as Sprint and Verizon. That’s why I really like GSM network over CDMA. It’s also great for globetrotter since you can request to get the phones unlocked from T-Mobile, Cigular or other GSM carrier so you can use it worldwide (pre-paid sim in different countries).

The price is pretty expensive for what you’re getting (see above posts).

Nice phone but I am going bananas for the song on the official website http://www.lgpradaphone.com . Does anyone know what song it is?

13 Vincent Nguyen 02.02.07 at 3:58 pm

Irena, it’s been driving me nutz too! Does anyone know?

14 Irena 02.03.07 at 4:38 am

I kid you not Vincent I’ve been loosing sleep over this song ( or just about ) and I’ve searched high and low, and what have I found so far??? NOT A DAMN THING. I brainwashed myself listening to it on the lgprada website trying to hear what they say in it to have some clue and still nothing.
I’m sick for the phone and am gonna get it but I figured : well it is not avalible yet so until then I can at least get the song…. boy was I wrong or what.
Plz anyone step up to the plate or else im ending up in the loony bin.

15 Vincent Nguyen 02.03.07 at 12:13 pm

It may be a song that LG/PRADA composed especially for the site? Make sure you shoot me an email when you get the phone! vincent [at] aradius.com or send me an AIM at dteky.

Not sure if anyone has got this phone yet, But i checked out cingular a couple days ago and the new iphone will now be released in november sometime and is also going to start at $800. instead of $399. and $599. Also it is required to buy the media bundle to make the phone work. So people who want the iphone prepare to pay a grand when all said and done.

17 Vincent Nguyen 03.09.07 at 5:58 pm

Rick, a November release date goes against everything Apple has been preaching up until last week’s tech summits.
