They aren't doing anything more deliberate than following up on what they said they would do. Get the 2G phone unlocked and use it on t-mobile's network. I still have the original iPhone. Two years ago, I was able to get 230 kbps on EDGE. Since then AT&T has pretty much trashed the EDGE network. I can now only get 20 to 30 kbps today. I'm sure that AT&T has been deliberately lowering the speeds and functionality of the EDGE network to force people to upgrade, spend money, and to get locked-into a 2 year agreement.
