AT&T is getting rid of the EDGE network in favor of the 3G network. They aren't doing anything more deliberate than following up on what they said they would do. Get the 2G phone unlocked and use it on t-mobile's network.

Theo: you don't want a 2G iPhone. I still have the original iPhone. Two years ago, I was able to get 230 kbps on EDGE. Since then AT&T has pretty much trashed the EDGE network. I can now only get 20 to 30 kbps today.

I'm sure that AT&T has been deliberately lowering the speeds and functionality of the EDGE network to force people to upgrade, spend money, and to get locked-into a 2 year agreement.
