I feel that Softbank didn't know exactly what the reception to the iphone would be here.They decided to go with a conservative plan in case it didnt sell.At least cover the costs.Hence mandatory flat data plan.Even if you just sent a few emails a month,the monthly charge is on the steep side. Softbank 3G network is really,really improved since the Vodafone Japan days here.The Softbank 2G network is comparable to the states,ie:lousy. But in 2010 that horse will hit the glue factory.
