Remember Operation Fine Edge? That's AT&T's new project to boost speeds of their EDGE network so that they will be much faster. The operation was said to be completed by June 15th which has come and gone without anyone noticing any big differences. Until now.

AT&T/ Apple iPhone

Apparently users are seeing a dramatic increase in speeds over the EDGE network a mere hours before the iPhone is set to launch. Some are reporting speeds of up to 200Kbps.

Could this be what Steve has had hidden up his sleeve all along? He's let all of us believe that one of the single largest pitfalls of the iPhone is the data connection. Now at the moment of truth, with data speed no longer an issue, everyone will want an iPhone! Well, maybe it won't go quite that way, but I know that this will come as a relief to many potential iPhone buyers.

I don't currently have an AT&T phone, so I can't test these new speeds. If any of you out there are on their EDGE network, drop us a line and let us know what kind of speeds you're seeing.

If this turns out to be true then that will turn out to be a big difference for the iPhone. The biggest doubt for me about the iPhone is the slow data speeds.

I can verify that the speed has increased significantly.

At times I thought the speeds were comparable to WiFi. But the WiFi was turned off on my HTC 8125.
