You make a great point! How do I know? Well, the LG Prada phone also uses a capacitive screen. My memory serves me right (actual hands on at CeBIT) the screen was fairly sensitive. Even though the iPhone’s screen derives from Fingerworks and LG Prada from Synaptics, they are pretty much the same technology.

I consider the publication of material from unnamed sources to be very unfair. In the little blurb in your article you claim many things about the keyboard of the iPhone. Have you ever been able to touch an iPhone or use it for an extended period? Apple appears willing to give some credible journalists access to an iPhone for the purpose of a substantive review. Have you requested to do a review for Apple? That would be a much more useful thing to do for the community than simply publishing something some guy told you. How do we know that this person was being honest with you? Perhaps that person wants to affect the price of the stock so that they can make a quick profit. How do we know that you aren’t trying to manipulate things? You do now have a reputation for publishing false information that can significantly affect the short term price of a stock. You must feel the need to be very careful about what you say. Has the SEC contacted you about any of this? I’d be interested to see if they are concerned about credible journalists publishing false or otherwise unconfirmed rumors with the possible intent of manipulating prices.

Can you give us any information about the source of your information? Was the source of this keyboard information the same as the source of the internal Apple email you received a few weeks ago? If so, are you at least a little less trusting of this source now or do you simply believe everything he or she says? Was it a completely different source? Are you at least absolutely certain this person had access to an iPhone and had no axe to grind with Apple or their employees?

You describe the keyboard as “disappointing”. How so? Would you prefer it had no keyboard at all? It’s a nice thing to have the ability to input short amounts of text, don’t you think? Can’t you see that there could be uses for this? I and everyone else knows that there will be limits to the amount of typing that one will want to do on an iPhone. I also would not type anything significant on a BlackBerry keyboard. What’s the point?

You say it won’t replace a BlackBerry. It’s not a business product. Now, I guess this is because of the keyboard. But have you considered what people in business do? Do you believe they need to be constantly typing long documents while they are on sales calls or something? Perhaps you’re thinking about what a journalist needs. I’d agree that a journalist needs to be able to type moderately long documents but don’t you have a desk to work at? Perhaps when you’re out on the road hunting down secret sources you could have them email you the text of the information they are leaking so that you can just cut and paste into your article saving you the difficulty of typing these things. As a byproduct of this you’ll have a little more time to actually try and find a second or third source for your information. You do at least have a second source, don’t you? If not, you might try John Dvorak. I’m sure he could confirm some of this stuff for you.

Well, actually if the iPhone’s glass touch screen is anything like the HTC Touch, then you do! Unfortunately for the Touch, you DO need to press firmly on the screen in order to get a response. Lets hope that’s not the case with the iPhone!

That being said, the iphone’s keyboard might actually suck, but engadget didnt talk to a tester to confirm so.

Shouldn’t take it personal – not to defend Engadget, these are not “their” words but the words of 1-tester.

I don’t care what anyone says, I’m getting one and so will the staff.

That said, none of what is stated here is new. You would expect the smudges (all regular iPod’s have this issue and why you would purchase a case to limit this type of damage) and poor performance over Edge as that story has been reported on for quite a while.

Well, I’m not saying Engadget is 100% accurate all the time, every time. But they do get more scoops most sites don’t get.
