I was determined to turn my iphone into the ultimate remote access device. I set up remote desktop sharing so I could VNC into my computer. I set up port forwarding on my router. I activated the transmission web interface for controlling downloads via iphone. I turned on internet sharing so I could access my video files from the phone and stream video through safari. I set up automator actions to convert downloaded video into iphone-compatible format and send to internet sharing.

I could now, away from home, decide I wanted to download a video or tv show, have my home computer download it, control that via transmission web interface, convert the video into iphone format, then stream it to my phone. It was brilliant.

So, at work the next morning (I was up all night thinking up this brilliant scheme), I enacted my plan. I was going to watch the newest episode of Lost on my iphone. I had a full battery. I used mocha VNC to open the torrent file from safari, I followed the download from transmission’s web interface, I converted it, and then it was ready to stream. I accessed the file from safari, and it worked! I was watching Lost on the iphone! Then, exactly 1 minute and 16 seconds into the video, my phone died.

It’s funny that the question of battery popped up today, I actually drained it fastest today, less than two hours, thanks to new Slingbox.

I bought the Slingbox and in just little less than two hours my battery was done, before I started it my phone was completely charged overnight.

Well I had a car accident and I had to be on my phone at all times with insurance and the Kaiser. Well I had just upgraded to a 3G and I dident know that my car charger from my Iphone 1st gen would not work! I was lost in L.A. going on a job interview using my Map for directions when it died on me! I have never driven to or around LA. I had to find a Starbucks and re-charge. Well I missed the interview and I had to drive back home 300 miles away to San Jose!! So ya I could have used the Mophie then!!

I went on a mountain climb and wanted to trace my steps up and back down again. I turned off Bluetooth, 3G and WiFi and I dimmed my screen considerably. I rebooted to make sure any native background processes would be stopped, then I launched MotionX’s GPS app, got positive satellite signals, and started the Stopwatch function.

After a bit over an hour, I was at the summit of the mountain and checked the GPS details – I was astonished to discover that I had nearly completely drained my battery! I shut off the phone and started my trek down, unable to capture the return trip…(sigh).

    Mophie’s Juicepack would’ve been a Godsend!

  14. Jim says:

Every time I use a location based app the battery drains faster than keg at a frat party.

  15. YK says:

Playing a game while listening to a boring, never getting that time back meeting that went around and around. The battery died and I had to listen to the banter.

  16. Mark says:

Demoing my new ibrate app for the shorties drains the battery the quickest of any app. I’ve done the research.

I’ll have to recharge my iPhone almost every day for normal usage with 3G, bluetooth, Wifi and push mail enabled.

  24. Ezra says:

In a full day during the school year I use my iphone to listen to music on the way to class. Between classes I use it to play games (tetris, etc.) and during class I use it to take notes and write assignments. Im just kidding, mainly i use it in class to play games. If i use my iphone at work to listen to music after the rest of my day I usually find myself needing to wait at home for an hour to charge up before I go out. How WHACK is THAT? iphones are supposed to aid the party… not delay it.

  25. Daniel says:

I’m a musician, and was playing at SxSW (the music festival in Austin, TX), and at SxSW the day begins early and ends around 4 or 5am, and the whole time there are thousands of bands playing, friends in austin, people and shows to see, etc. Not to mention constant use of maps to find venues around the city and checking with calendar and email to figure out which shows are when…I ran my phone down 2 full cycles before midnight each day. I would’ve loved a juicepack for that, and could definitely use it for other all-day events like it

  26. Ofer Fuchs says:

So I drain my iPhone in my head (I don’t own one yet, waiting for the new June model). I used my imaginary iPhone so much, it lasts about two hours at a charge.

  27. isuquinndog says:

How about the time I left WiFi on, went to use the maps in Chicago when I was lost and just as it found where I was….boom. Dead iPhone and large amounts of cursing from my mouth.

  28. Rob says:

    youtube + games + 3g + full brightness – charging = dead

  29. JT says:

I went out Saturday morning with my 3 year old in my wife’s car so no car charger. I didn’t think about that when I set off on my voyage. Once I realized “NO Car CHARGER!” I dimmed my iPhone light, made my email push every 1 hour, turned off all other app pushes and downloaded a bible app so I can start praying.

Like every Saturday with my son I had my “Honey Do” list and began waiting in different lines to complete my daily task. If any one spends time with a 3 year old they know that they don’t understand “waiting”. Knowing this can come back to hurt me I allowed him to use my iPhone to play games so I can get things done.

I realize the time and it’s getting close to lunch time. I decide to stop everything and get the little one some food. The little Angel doesn’t do well when he is hungry, be afraid very afraid. I begin to drive to McDs when the car stalls out. My wife didn’t fill the tank. #$@*%$ I begin to call triple A and my iPhone battery died. OHH HELL NO!!! $%@#$! #$@*%$!

My little Angel begins to say, “Papi, I’m hungry. I’m hungry. I’m hungry. I’m hungry.” over and over and over again. Of course, I’m thinking #$%&@$#% iPhone battery. Needless to say, It wasn’t fun walking with a hungry toddler to get gas. $%@#$! #$@*%$!

  30. Nate says:

I used to use Push with Zimbra Mail server – my phone would drain in 4-5 hours without doing anything else – I even went through Apple and got a replacement thinking it was the phone – nope! Turns out Zimbra’s implementation of Push (just under a year ago) was the one sucking the battery.

  31. IC says:

Can’t run for over an hour while using runkeeper unless the phone is fully charged. Listening to music makes it even worse! Need more juice

  32. Debbi says:

As I write this the 10% percent battery message comes up so I better hurry and get it on the charger. All I’ve done is a little web surfing, a little e- mailing, a little messaging, & a little ipoding. Well, I guess I’d better plug it up now.

  33. Mike Clarke says:

I was using the Trapster app since I had recently got a ticket and couldn’t afford to get another one. It was great because not only did it alert me to potential speed traps, but it also had the traffic on the maps. Unfortunately, it completely drained my battery so by the time I got to my destination, it had about 10% left.

  34. Razauq says:

Was traveling and I forgot my charger…so I put it in airplane mode so that the Cellular antenna wouldn’t keep looking for towers and drain the battery…and when I needed to use it, I shut off bluetooth, wireless lowered my brightness and changed all my email settings to manual…lasted a whopping 9 hours!!!

Perhaps not the most critical of losses out there but it was traumatic to me. While on my first “Girls Weekend” away from my children, I wore the battery out constantly. Before you gush and think awww the kids and husband were calling her all the time…..no that’s not how I wore the battery out. My days away were spent on the white sandy shores of one of the prettiest beaches on the Gulf Coast. I had to take hour breaks during the day to let the poor iPhone rest and recharge in the condo. I wore my battery out taking pictures and updating my Twitter.com status and sending Twitpics to all of my friends where I live, who were stuck in New England, as well as responding to Facebook.com and AIM messages telling me how jealous people were and how they wished they were frolicking on the beach with us. After all…..it was 9 bikini clad girls on the beach drinking cocktails all day long before getting dressed up and hitting the club!!

I did not lose my job or important client data or miss business contacts due to dead battery…..I missed more opportunities to post bikini clad women and cocktail pictures to make my friends in the chilly weather envy and miss me!!!

  40. Mark says:

Rothbury festival last year. I was covering the show, and was photographing about 30 bands in 4 days. The sheer number of calls and constant use of the GPS to coordinate where everybody was resulted in the phone being dead halfway through the day, every day. Every morning we’d plop this inverter on the car battery and manage to get maybe half a charge on the phones before we were out of charge time and had to hit it.

Not this year. External batteries are the rule of the day.

  41. Carter W says:

While my wife was away for a “Girls Weekend” on the Gulf Coast, I wore my battery out several times. I would love to say that it was worn out receiving loving, adoring, longing for you, missing you email and text; that was not the case. I was constantly bombarded with many Twitter.com updates and twitpic pictures. I was at home wrangling our two young off spring….yes I know it’s my fatherly duty. Did I mention that I was required to coach a T-Ball game? It involved chasing 9 rowdy attention span deprived 4.5 – 6 yr olds. Did I mention that My Wife is actually the one that volunteered to coach said T-Ball team? Not only did I have to coach the game I was also required to be her representative at “Picture Day” for our 5 yr olds T Ball team as well as our 7 year olds Rookie team? IT was painful and delayed by 2 hours and many @%$#^%$ words were involved? All the while I was slaving away cooking and cleaning and tending to our children, the male equivalent of being barefoot and pregnant with 14 youngry children and crops in the field, She was frolicking on the beach. My poor battery was failed by receiving pictures of women, bikini clad, oiled up and sunkissed and alcohol filled, bikini clad women. As well as the updates on their movements and how hot the sand was and how wonderful the water was and how many men were hitting on their group and how her best friend (an ex boyfriend that she refers to as Tuna Can Man) finally showed up and how all the girls loved him. While she was having all this fun and killing my iPhone battery I was stuck in chilly New England with 2 children asking were Mama is and when she was coming home and a cat who chose to puke everywhere.

  42. Jimmy Z says:

I was using some photo-editing apps to take a picture I took of my girlfriend and put some cool filters on it, my wonderful phone died. It doesn’t help that she was counting on me to call/text her really soon, and she was mad at me and CONVINCED I was cheating on her with other girls during the time my phone was off, which I paid for later, believe me. Come to think of it, similar scenarios have made my life a living hell with a much-too-easily-drained battery and a jealous-ass girlfriend. NOT a great combination. Ever.

  43. Jason Leaeno says:

I must admit that I am very impressed with the battery life of the iPhone when using the iPod function transversely I am very unimpressed with the battery life when using some apps or games.

  44. JR Pagaduand says:

I had forgotten to study the day of the final for my Asian Art History class. Luckily I still had all power point lectures on my phone so drained out the battery studying for three hours before class. I got an “A” ahaha thank you IPHONE!

  45. Darren A says:

I was playing Wolfenstein 3D for a solid 4-5 hours and was on the last level when it shut off on me!

  46. Nick says:

I took my 3G on a camping trip and watched TV shows in the tent – lying down with the phone sitting in the net-bag storage bit at the top.

Needless to say that didn’t work out for long.

  47. Jim says:

Oh, that’s definitely going to be when I first bought it. I was on it non-stop checking every little feature and spent the rest of the remaining battery time downloading and testing out the new apps from iTunes. Seemed to be so quick, but I’m sure it was around 2-3 hours. Doesn’t last long if you are constantly on it and pushing it to its computing max. On average, if I get 6 hours I’m lucky.

  48. Jim says:

I was on a flight to New York and played with the iPhone on the plane for most of the trip – when I landed, my iPhone battery was down to 10%! It was like walking on eggshells to avoid checking it. It was a stressful day because I had to avoid calls so I could check important emails.

  49. Joshua Johnson says:

Well of course i was working and doing a mix of talking, surfing, and music and poof dead… Its hard to say well i cant talk anymore….

  50. Ted says:

I was streaming pandora on high quality and that was when it drained the fastest!
