I have to admit that I have never used .Mac. I still use my PC for most of my work, so I haven't really been able to justify it. However, with my shiny new iPhone 3G and the awesome features of MobileMe, I think I'll be giving Apple a little bit more of my money for their service. As we all know, .Mac will be shutting its doors to make way for MobileMe. We now have official confirmation as to when this will be taknig place.

On July 9th starting at 6PM (PST) the .Mac service will go down, and MobileMe will be up six hours later. The only .Mac services available during those six hours wil be .Mac Mail accessed from a desktop mail app, an iPhone or iPod touch.

That sucks. I’ve been using .Mac since it was the free iTools package back in 00. My biggest reason for sticking with it was because the cable companies kept changing their names and thus MY email address. MobileMe is the dumbest name I’ve ever heard and it’s a shame that Apple has obviously given the .Mac leadership over to some newb in Cupertino.

The features of .Mac are quite nice though. I use the web storage all the time and now with the new iPhoto I’ve been using Web Gallery too (I never really used iPhoto previously). It’s actually quite a nice package…with a stupid name!

MobileMe…sounds like something Microsoft would come up with.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Frankly, I really like the capabilities of Mobile Me, but I’m concerned about the name. While I’ve been told that my .Mac email address will still function, I feel that I now have to start migrating folks in my address book for the eventual discontinuance of .Mac email addresses.

When I notify my email contacts, I will have to find a way to make it clear that the new email address.Me is NOT a vanity thing. That kind of irritates me. I use my email quite a bit for business and I resent some marketing nut burdening me with their overly cutesy moniker!
