MMS for the iPhone 3G on AT&T works now!

AT&T promised that it’ll offer MMS on the iPhone after getting some system upgrades done, but according to Engadget, “seems that it works right now — if you’ve got a build of OS 3.0 that’ll let it.” The site’s tipster sent screenshoots that indicate both MMS and tethering are in full effect on the network.

  1. itsmemalloy says:

Just got off the phone with AT&T and they said they haven’t heard anything about MMS and that as of right now, that feature is unavailable to iPhone users. Verbatim. WTF, AT&T!?

  2. zero1zero1 says:

Why do people post things that are true? Sucks. Neither MMS nor Tethering work.

  3. Niels says:

I have the latest seed and this is simply not true. The camera icon does not even show up to allow you to even add photos. Story is a fake.

  4. AngleJo008 says:

It is true but for a small minority. You must have the .ipcc file of “AT&T 5.0″. most of you I’m willing to bet is 4.00

  5. Acidsmooth says:

I just got AT&T 5.0 it works for tethering, but not MMS, so far anyway.

  6. Raphael Salgado says:

I can say that MMS and tethering is working for me on my iPhone 3G running 3.0 GM Seed and the modified carrier settings file from blogsdna.com.

However, I would like to add that I had to contact AT&T to change the provisioning on my number. Coincidentally, my phone needed repair at the store, so I transferred my SIM to a cheap MMS-capable phone. I called 611 and they fixed the account with a generic data plan, removing the MMS block. When I got my iPhone 3G back, I placed my SIM card back in and MMS and tethering worked instantly. My Visual Voicemail is broken, though, possibly due to either a setting in the modified carrier file AND/OR since my number is not provisioned with an iPhone data plan, I might not be able to access it that way.

I’ll call AT&T again and see if I can get my iPhone plan back WITHOUT losing MMS.

  7. sonisoe says:

dont mean to be braggy…. what do you guys mean that AT&T are starting to offer MMS & tethering, were these not available before ?….here in indonesia (southeast asia) MMS and tethering have been around for quiet a few yrs including video-call….. i thought it was more of iphone’s lack of these features rather than at&t capabilities….

  8. Duane says:

The MMS and tethering are working for folks who are on the 3.0 Gold Master and who have done some hackery.

I tried to do it myself, but the computer gave me trouble with the downgrading to the Pre-release version of itunes 8.2….

  9. Acidsmooth says:

I can’t get MMS to work. I called AT&T and they refused to change my account. AT&T is the worst carrier I can think of. If then want exclusive rights to the iPhone then they should have the shit together to support it.

  10. Kurt says:

Yeah, lets all get the 5.0 software and overload AT&T’s network when they’re really not ready to support it yet. That’ll make ‘em REAL happy.

  11. Ry says:

    Worst comments ever.

  12. MadMan says:

I loaded ATT 5.0 on 4 differnt iPhone 3Gs here and 2 of them MMS is not working. Tethering on all work fine.

  13. AT&T CAN SHOVE IT says:

i got both tethering and support for mms……it wrks fine att is keeping this from us ’cause they are in talks with apple on the exclusivity of the iphones wireless network which currently has att as the only sanctioned provider

  14. Brown says:

AT&T sucks! You would think they would have their act together for this 3.0 release. I’m going raise hell with AT&T. This is unacceptable!

  15. jake says:

Until people unite and quit getting screwed by at&t this will continue to happen!! at&t charges the iphone users more than other plan, and for that matter, i phone users pay more than another carrier for PDA plans!! they knew for the longest time that apple was going to offer this MMS, and you can’t tell me being the exclusive dealer for the iphone, that they didn’t know this!! they could have and should have had this all worked out before this week!! they obviously don’t care about their customers!! i bet they would listen if all the iphone users threatened to change carriers!! just think about it!! if all the iphone users threatened to quit at&t would go bankrupt by the end of the first day!! there are millions of iphone users they are powerful and have a voice, they should be heard!! trust me by the end of the first day apple and att would get off their assess and do something!! post it on your my space, on face book, tweet about it!! stopping getting screwed by this company!!!!

  16. dwalls says:

I got mms and tethering to work on my iphone att its very easy dont let att lie to us!!!

  17. NeMeSiS says:

They have millions of users with iphones of which they never had to support MMS. They want to beef up their network to support the influx of millions of people trying to send pictures on the same day once its released. They’re trying to prevent an overload to the network. It’s smart but this should have been worked on or thought of earlier. they’re not charging more for MMS as many have stated in other forums as they released a news letter saying its included with the text. Pricing for tethering has yet to be announced though. I’ve dealt without MMS for nearly 2 years now i think 2-3 more months won’t kill me.

  18. a7thvengeancex says:

i got tethering to work but MMS im still working on check this out IT WORKSSSS http://www.blogsdna.com/3720/enable-3g-internet-tethering-on-iphone-3g-30-with-iphone-safari.htm

  19. Ouch Damnit says:

Apple used MMS as a selling point for the iPhone 3G S.
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3g-s/messages.html
I bought one fully expecting to be able to picture text only to find out I was lied to. Apple sucks, corporate whores.

  20. Tater says:

Apple is definitely not the problem “Ouch Damnit.” I’m going to be as dumb as you and assume you live in the United States. iPhones are sold worldwide…. O2 in Europe does offer MMS so please do not blame the company you just paid 200-300 dollars for their phone which is an amazing piece of equipment. You’re only being obtuse about the situation because you haven’t done your homework. Read articles about MMS, it was in their keynote at WWDC. Become informed, they’re far from what you’d call a “corporate whore” like Microsoft. And if you can read between the lines you can see that Apple and AT&T are not getting along well right now…. Read before you post some BS on a blog where most people can tell you you’re an idiot for not seeing.

  21. Wil says:

Yeah this is a major foul. One of the 3 new features I was excited about with 3.0 doesn’t even work??? AT&T is lucky to have the exclusivity of the iphone. If apple sold it to all networks… wouldn’t it light a fire under all their asses to have this stuff ready to go? It’s not like AT&T is doing Apple any favors by supporting the best selling phone of all time. I’d be paying AT&T less than half of what I’m paying them now per month if it weren’t for the iphone. This is unacceptable….

  22. Ouch Damnit says:

I’ll post the link again, Tarter, in case you missed it: http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3g-s/messages.html
What are you, Apple’s lawyer? One of the iPhone 3G S’s major selling points was MMS and it’s unavailable. Do I have a reason to be disappointed? Sure I do. It’s called false advertising. Oh, and your sauce sucks.

  23. DC says:

People, use 611 and start calling AT&T and complaining. Do it politely, but do it daily and do it often. If they’re going to screw us over like this, they deserve to be heard. Call them, ask them to turn it on, and once they don’t, tell them they’ll be receiving another complaint from you every day until it’s finally enabled. They deserve to hear our voice….calling them and telling them about it is going to start costing them $$$ to keep picking up the phone. Maybe that way they’ll get the idea that we’re annoyed about their crappy service levels.

  24. Rich says:

I heard they WERE going to be ready for the initial 3gs launch which was sappose to be in or near the end of July but apple bumped it up last minute to counter the PRE as the PRE will have video capabilities with their July firmware update. So really, its apples fault!

  25. lk214s says:

For all you who want their mms to work you need to get the 5.0 carrier file. Once you have it goto Itunes and hold the command key(apple) or the shift key (windows) while selecting the restore button in itunes. Select the 5.0 carrier file and install it. Once this is completed tethering will automatically be available. To activate the mms you need a at&t phone already programmed for mms, A friend or family members phone will work fine. Take your sim and put it in their phone. Make a few phone calls, send a mms, dial voicemail. Put the sim card back into your phone and mms will be working. It looks exactly like the pics above. GL…….

  26. Tater says:

Wow “Ouch Dammit” first off the name is TATER, not TARTER (which is actually spelled TARTAR.) Next, no I’m not “Apple’s Lawyer” and no its not false advertising. MMS is in the software, its the fact that AT&T is supposedly afraid of the boost in the usage of bandwith. You are an idiot. If it were “false advertising” then Apple would have been sued over a year ago for push notification (that WAS their bad) but still, it doesn’t take a genius, read around on macrumors.com/9to5mac/cultofiphone.com and you’ll be able to then speak with a little authority. And please, if you are going to try to sound cool, learn to read and spell. And DC, thats a smart idea, if the complaints start piling up, they’ll know its important. I think they hold a certain responsibility asking for exclusive rights to the iPhone to take care of the iPhone customers. That doesn’t mean to shun any of their non-iPhone customers but rather they need to work twice as hard because they asked for it to be solely their phone… I’m curious to see if the contract is expanded.

  27. JakeF says:

    Fake!!!
Notice how the date is not show on the lock screen. And why doesn’t it have the calendar app on the home screen?-Because it would have said when the pics were taken.

    Nice Try.

  28. Not You says:

Not Fake! I was able to send mms for about an hour after tweeking settings, but then it stoped, and my tethering works without any issues!

  29. Jim says:

    Who ever posted:

“It is true but for a small minority. You must have the .ipcc file of “AT&T 5.0″. most of you I’m willing to bet is 4.00″ has it right.

Kind of funny – I just finished my jailbreak and unlock and don’t have the MMS capability. I guess I’ll do it again later )-:

I think that in order to punish Apple and ATT I’m gonna opt out of this little control game they are playing and take as many friends as possible with me. They need to go through some more growing pains before they deserve my money.

    Jim

  30. Not You says:

You dont need to JB your phone in order to get MMS and Tethering option, you just need an ipcc! my phone isnt Jailbroken(yet)!

  31. Jim says:

I’m not too concerned – I get VOIP, text and international text with real replies straight to my text, not email, tethering, MMS and everything else… The point is I’m tired of always tinkering with it to fix the broken crap that Apple and Att put out there on purpose. Would you buy another of a car that required you to work on it all the time to drive it?

Thats the way I feel about Iphone – everything they advertise is ALMOST true… but doesnt quite do what you want. Unless they change I’ll drop the service and pay the penalty – just because…

  32. Jon says:

Don’t give in Jim, thats exactly what they want.

  33. Matt says:

Okay, i got the 5.0 ipcc file, tethering works and so does VVM but no sending mms although i do get the camera icon, i have tried over and over and still nothing, i even tried to input the settings for at&t from help.benm.at/mms.php and this didnt even allow me to send mms and on top of that it disabled tethering. Is mms not working because at&t is not supporting the service on the iphone, i mean i see the snap shot above but i can not send mms,

My tethering is 100%. I just had to fix my Visual Voicemail because it stoped working after turning on tethering. it is easy to fix it:

go to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data… then change the Visual Voicemail APN setting (ONLY!) from wap.cingular to acds.voicemail — the rest of the fields should be empty, except for the other 2 wap.cingular fields (One under the “Cellular Data” section, the other under the “MMS” section.) you should maintain the same.

I also was able to make the camera icon appear besides the text input on SMS but it could not send it. Red exclamation mark besides the picture. Any Sugestion? I used those settings:
    APN: wap.cingular;
    Username: wap@cingulargprs.com;
    Password which is case sensitive: CINGULAR1;
    MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com;
    MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32

    is it right?

  38. px10 says:

OK to let everyone know MMS and Tethering both work on iPhone 3G and 3GS without jailbreaking. You just download a file straight on your iPhone by visiting the site. I also downloaded and installed the .ipcc file 5.0 and tethering works but keep getting the MMS error message. I will be trying the trick to put the sim in another phone and have it show up as different as well and then try it. Also I see alot of people say that when go to Settings>Network there is a Cellular Data spot. I do not have that? Why? It has never been there even with the fresh install of 3.0. Thanks

  39. Adnin says:

I have MMS on my iphone 3G. It works on t-mobile!!! So i’m happy that i’m being able to use it… BUT GUESS WHAT?!?!?! EFFEN iPhone’s ability to convert the pictures and send them in is so CRAPPY that all you do is get blurry PICS!!!! So if you receive a MMS from a non-iphone user phone, the PIC IS exactly the way you sent it, BUT if you send out a pic or receive a pic from another iphone user…THE PICTURES ARE TERRIBLE!!!! BLURRY and DISGUSTING!!!

  40. I-Pissed says:

I have had nothing but problems with ATT since I upgraded by Iphone to the 3G in late March. More dropped calls than ever before, slower internet connections, mis-programmed phone issues, etc. all resulting in over $200 worth of credits to my account after hours and I am talking hours of calls to ATT and Apple. Finally upon the release of the 3GS I was told by an ATT manager one week before the release that she would note my account to upgrade me to the new 3Gs by trading my 3G phone into them. I have verified that the account was noted, however, not a single ATT retail store manager or customer service manager on the phone will allow this to happen. I have even contacted the original store manager but since she is in CA and I live in WA there is nothing she can do about it now. I can’t believe ATT is doing this and Apple is supporting their lack of service. It’s amazing as the managers have all said, “well, our manager gave you mis-information and even though the account does say this, we cannot give you an exchange!” I’m taking them to small claims court! Never will I ever use ATT again! If that means leaving Apple, so be it! Apple will be sorry they ever got involved with ATT!

  41. zakkman says:

So how do you put 5.0 on from windows?

  42. wellslogan says:

    @ zakkman-

Head over to http://help.benm.at/ on your iPhone, scroll down to MobileConfigs, find USA, click (tap) it, then find AT&T (or T-Mobile) and click it. Then a new “app” will open up that should have the System Preferences or Settings Icon in it. Click Install. If prompted, click “Replace”. Restart your iPhone, and now you should see the camera icon next to the text input box in Messages, and Tethering should now be an option if you go to Settings->General->Network->Internet Tethering. Turn it on. Note that sending an MMS will most likely result in an error.

  43. zakkman says:

Thank you worked great for Tethering but the camera icon doesn’t show up for MMS. Do I need to do something else?

  44. amy says:

This is not a false story. It’s (MMS) is supposed to be there. Check the iphone 3gs manual called “Finger Tips”. I just discovered it in my box. it’s on the last page.

  45. zakkman says:

    @wellslogan

Thank you worked great for Tethering but the camera icon doesn’t show up for MMS. Do I need to do something else?

  46. Oh My GOD says:

Ok, you should ALL read this! Apparently if you have AT&T (MMS) is not gonna work. TMobile will. If anyone can prove me WRONG please try, I’ll be waiting…… I’ve done research on this for days now and I haven’t seen ONE AT&T phone from the USA do it. I don’t doubt it works everywhere else just fine, but it’s not happening in Obama Land!!!

  47. IN ARIZONA says:

I agree with many of you. I bought an Iphone 3GS the day it came out due to false advertising. I wanted a cool new toy that did what I needed for business and due to the promises of cut and paste and MMS and etc. things I can do on a rudimentary Blackberry Pearl.

The MMS does not work, the log-in program to view things sent by others is a joke and I’m paying a LOT more than I did with T-mobile for specific features that don’t work.

I may just use it for 29 days and return if it does not work by July 19th.

APPLE & ATT get ready for a flood of returns within the “no-cancellation” period. Your tactics and appalling service earned it. Can anyone say “class-action”? It only takes two people with the same complaint to make a class and lawyers are already working on it.

  48. Mike says:

if you look at the bottom of the page at the number 1. it says “1. MMS support from AT&T coming in late summer. Sending video via MMS is not supported on iPhone 3G.” ( link is http://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/ )

  49. Alberto says:

I’m returning my 3gs so I dont get stuck with the 2 year contract. I don’t understand why would they even put it on sale if its not even ready to do everything it’s suppose to do. I can’t believe Apple ended up doing business with this company(AT&T).

  50. KaBam says:

Hmm, As an iphone lover, I’m extremely disappointed, but not surprised. Apple is a Marketing Storm (a good one) and the company has the absolute finest industrial designers.

Unfortunately, it stops there. Regardles of Stevie J’s spin, they’ve just never been good software developers. itunes + iphone + safari + quicktime is a nightmare. (Try adding an airport express at home and watch the S#!T fly)

From a business standpoint, they negotiated an exclusive deal with AT&T, without a clause for lack of service provision? I would think not. Apple let the 3Gs roll live when AT&T wasn’t ready (even if that reason was due to AT&T) Apple still chose to roll out the 3Gs. The reason? The Pre.

Apple has always made these misteps. Such as trying to convince the world that the RISC processor would ALWAYS be faster than the CISC. 20 years of marketing, feeding the appleheads…until one day, Jobs stands up and ‘switches’ to Intel. Wammo, they all looked like fools, years of explaining why PC’s suck…all of a sudden, the Mac was a PC. Of course he had to, “Motorola just couldn’t keep up”. For Apple the problem is always the OTHER partner, that they chose.

They’re loaded with bad decisions. MMS should have rolled with the 3G at the LATEST. Apple has always been very, very weak under the hood in all their product lines anyway. Like I said, they can design enclosures like no one’s business, their marketing is great, their advertising, well, it WAS good, now it’s so far off base their destroying their brand, but that’s another story.

AT&T can’t handle the demands ‘today’. Maybe on the 17th they will be able to. Apple shouldn’t be LOCKED into an agreement with a carrier that cannot provide service to their customers.

So basically, two blind mice. One looking for an exclusive carrier, and choosing one that can’t provide the service, but who begged for the exclusive, and is now crying. Great move for both…I applaud their idiocy.
