LTE iPhone hitting Verizon in 2010?

According to the latest leaks, Verizon and Apple are in discussions regarding a new iPhone for the carrier, which would be launched in 2010.  USA Today quote “people familiar with the situation” who claim discussions between Steve Jobs and Verizon began a few months ago.

While USA Today suggest a CDMA iPhone would be the likely result, Apple’s recent financial conference call would seem to debunk that.  During the call, COO Tim Cook dismissed talk of a CDMA iPhone because the CDMA standard is predominantly a US specification.  Instead, Apple want “one phone for the whole world”.

What that could indicate, therefore, is a LTE (Long Term Evolution) iPhone, just in time to spearhead Verizon’s new LTE network set to launch in 2010.  LTE has been adopted by not only Verizon but other US carriers – including AT&T – as well as networks worldwide, in keeping with Apple’s “one phone” intentions.  What remains to be seen is how AT&T might react to the possibility of a super-fast new iPhone bypassing their exclusivity.

  1. Can we say “Too little, too late”? I switched from Verizon last year when there seemed to be no hope for an iPhone on their network. Their best comparison at the time was the Voyager. I came pretty close to upgrading to it, but made a much wiser decision to drop Verizon for the AT&T iPhone. Is there any reason to return to Verizon just because they finally provide service to the world’s best cell phone? I can’t think of one.

  2. Shivan says:

Well it’s about time!!! I haven’t been able to switch to AT&T because the service blows where I live…hopefully now this will become a reality

  3. Brent says:

I hope this happens soon. Where I go to school AT&T’s service is about zero; however, Verizon’s service is spectacular. I would really like to see this happen.

I agree and many people do as well that the iphone is a great and far better phone then many of the phones on the market today. but honestly, what is a cell phone for? to call people. Many people will agree that verizon has a far superior network to att&t. even they know it, which is why at&t are still pushing so hard for exclusive rights. there ace in the hole is that phone. there service sucks and the world knows it, but they are willing to purchase bad service for an amazing phone.

When you cancel the best service simply because att has a cooler phone, imho thats a shallow mistake. and there is no function on an iphone that a blackberry or windows phone doesn’t offer that someone would absolutly have to have. (farting apps anyone?) would you buy an amazing high res flat screen 600 inch tv if you could not get a cable signal? case in point

  5. lyn says:

“verizon has a far superior network to att and they even know it”. I disagree. Even though cdma may work better in some places people dont just buy a iphone on att if they cant make a phone call. Were I leave verizon pretty much blows and att is the cell service of choice. and before the iphone came out att still had 10 million more cell customers than verizon. Even though its speculated that verizon will be getting a iphone in 2010. it would either cost the company billions of dollars switching to gsm or apple billions of dollars to create a cdma iphone. To me it seems doubtful that apple will decide to place a iphone on a cdma network when their a “world” company and cdma is not a “world” technology

  6. Scionjb says:

Verizon is a far more better than all the other cell-phone sevices, yet people switch to AT&T for the iPhone. What’s amazing is that verizon is better but people switch to AT&T just for one cell-phone, when verizon is making a LTE Iphone in 2010!!! Can’t wait for the iPhone to get out, I’m buying it. I have a itouch and I love it so I should love the LTE Iphone!!! Can’t wait!!!

  7. Cellguy says:

Verizon is a good company but it’s too late in the game. They shouldn’t have let AT&T get the deal in the first place. Plus Verizon sales rep & cst service sucks, once they have you as a customer they treat you super dirty. I’m sticking with AT&T the Iphone is great and so was my Blackberry Curve b4 it. Can travel all over & never had an issue with AT&T. Last but not least if you have a AT&T connection they just do software upgrades to improve coverage in your area & when they go to 4G, Verizon would have to build a whole new infrastructure, they’re your grandparents company, AT&T is where it’s at.

  8. Austin says:

i think it would be great for verizon to get the iphone, its just that you would probably have to pay for all of the features that would be free for AT&T, i hate how expensive verizon is too. and i can’t imagine how much money the iphone is gonna be… oh great

  9. Dee says:

I have been on Verizon for 5 years now and I love their service. I switched from Sprint, so it was a major step up. I used to work for a cell carrier, so I know that it will depend on the area that you are in as to what kind of coverage you get and how good it is. However, I have never had a problem with the VZW customer service. Anyway, this is just one person’s opinion. I hope that the iPhone is released to Verizon. I would love to have it! But you can not please all of the people all of the time, and there is always going to be those who are not going to be happy either way!

  10. Dave says:

iphone on verizon?? I certainly hope so. At&t’s service is just god aweful…both technology-wise and customer-service-wise.

    Verizon…get me an iphone!!!!!
My family members with iphones would switch to verizon in a heart beat. They know that my service is superior to theirs but they want the iphone.

Can’t blame them, the iphone is awesome….but I won’t sacrafice coverage/service. I’m holding out for the marriage of Verizon and iPhone

  11. Yanki says:

With gsm you can go everywhere in this world and you can use your phone. You change only your sim card and u ready to go. With vzw nada papa, maybe you put inyourass

  12. Chad says:

    Quote”

“and before the iphone came out att still had 10 million more cell customers than verizon”.

This was with the acquistion of cingular. With Alltell now acquired by VZW, its more along the lines VZW is 10 million more than ATT again.

Quote ” Even though its speculated that verizon will be getting a iphone in 2010. it would either cost the company billions of dollars switching to gsm or apple billions of dollars to create a cdma iphone”.To me it seems doubtful that apple will decide to place a iphone on a cdma network when their a “world” company and cdma is not a “world” technology

LTE is software type, Just like CDMA and GSM. What has plagued the industry for years is what type of software that your phone utilizes. With CDMA and GSM kicked to the curb by both major parties this will allow for the customer to choose what LTE phone works best for them on what network. So the fact of having to spend billions of dollars to get the device is null as it will be the same for any carrier.

Lastly. I dont know if any of you were around with the tobacle of issues that plagued ATT and cingular when they were combining 2 diffrent technologies onto one network. Take a look at the below article. Verizon has pretty much done away with that with this spectrum purchase.

    http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=8276

Who will be the winner when this all comes to a boil and if this goes through? I think that Verizon will be. The network will be solid. There wont be issues of no service, or having to be in an enchanced service area. There wont be as many issues in area’s where LOS and cement cause your signal to deterirate. There are just too many pro’s. When all is said and done I think Verizon will win the LTE war just with the advanced thinking of purchasing spectrum so that it can be built completly seperately from the ground up.

  13. Hernandez says:

ATT is the best in phone selections. They provide and come out with way more phones then verizon. I use to have verizon but where I lived I had no service. There service sucks and I all way get dropped calls . Apple should stay with ATT because it’s a perfect fit. Why change when verizon is starting to go down the hole in stocks. ATT is the best choice for apple.

  14. stephen says:

TROLL alert: Hernandez clearly works for ATT.

With LTE network in 2010 VZW ‘could’ make a good candidate. Apple should at least consider non-exclusivity as ATT will get LTE up in 2011/2. Fact is, after WWDC09, it’s clear Apple are not happy with ATT. The single reason I have not jumped to ATT from VZW, even though I drool for an iPhone, is coverage. Everyone I know with an iPhone has text message delays and some can’t get reception inside larger buildings. I NEED reception and instant texts, otherwise I wouldn’t need a cell phone, I’d buy an iPod.

  15. jon says:

Im sorry but here in nyc no matter how many people i see with the Iphone i cant understand why they would sacrafice the whole concept of having it to use which is A PHONE . AT&T suffice it to say sucks in nyc…i dont care if it works in china …it needs to work at home and guess what it doesnt . Verizon on the other hand works pretty much 99.9% anywhere i need it and that has been even in the carribean and in the middle of the gulf of mexico…and yes the phones are way behind but hey at least they have a network that works for the main purpose PHONES !!!!!!! If i need to find a resturant its called google maps and verizon blackberries work wonders…so all Fruitbaskets can say HEELLO can u hear me now and i can say NO!!! LOL

  16. kyussmondo says:

I think this just hightlights the problem with the US mobile phone market. I frequently here statements like AT&T is poor in my area and Verizon is great. In the UK there are some differences but pretty much everywhere all the networks provide a similar level of service. No matter what network/carrier you choose then you will get a reasonable service. In Poland which some would class as a developing nation they had more 3G coverage than in the UK, even in mountainous areas. I know the US is a larger country in area but this is the worlds wealthiest nation by several times and a leader in technology, surely it should have a cell phone infrastructure to match?!

Secondly, I can understand Apple’s reasoning for not going to Verizon because they want to use the international GSM standard. However, with this reasoning, why are they exclusive to O2 in the UK when all networks in the UK use the GSM standard? A valid point in the US, but in a lot of countries the main standard used is GSM and the exclusivity contracts can not be justified and just lead to over-inflated prices for us the customer.

  17. bjmiceli says:

I have tried both the original version of the iphone and the 3g version. Here in Boston, each was a nightmare of dropped called, static, and “no bars” indicators. Often followed a moment later by 5 bars. The 3g version flipped constantly between edge and 3g. All of this was the fault of the network, at&t, which is simply lousy. I have no idea how good a phone the iphone is because the network it runs on is so crummy. It’s potential is hampered by that. On the other hand, Boston is saturated by Verizon’s cdma signal. I can make and receive a call in my basement bathroom with the door closed! I can ride the train from Boston to NY without a signal drop in Verizon signal (except in tunnels).

Since I am happily too old to be concerned about the cool factor of the iphone, I will gladly wait until it can be used on a good and reliable network. I understand that in Japan on the SoftBank network, it is spectacular. I suspect that a Verizon LTE iphone will be too. I might add that I have been exclusively a Mac user since 1986 and am very much a fan of Apple.

Finally, as for those people who claim that Verizon is somehow behind the times, the facts belie that. It covers nearly all of the USA in 3G signal, it is the first to move to LTE, and it is the number one carrier for a good reason: it works well. If you are worried about travel abroad, Verizon is coming out with more global phones which combine cdma, gsm, and 3g wcdma. They will also provide you with a gsm phone without a rental fee, sent directly to you, for trips to Europe. I used my cdma phone in Japan last month. Is Japan behind the curve too? Doubt it. They NEVER used gsm there.

  18. bjmiceli says:

Also, because Verizon is 45% owned by the UK’s Vodaphone, it offers highly competitive rates for both gsm and cdma international roaming.

Wouldn’t it be cool if the iphone worked as well at home as it did abroad?

    (Sorry for the typos above…)

  19. Irule says:

Ohhh The IPHONE I go where ever she goes, you sexy thing. The rest are just cell phones.

  20. Courtney says:

My friend has been with AT&T for a while now and I have witnessed the travesties she has experienced. She has gone through so many phones, so many plans and still gets dropped calls, missed calls she didn’t know about, lost text messages, everything. Me on the other hand, I have had no problems with VZW, overall it’s great. I have wanted the iPhone for soooo long now and I considered leaving Verizon to go them, but I decided that by the time I canceled my service, paid for a brand new phone, accessories and a plan, I would be paying out the behind by the end of everything. For whatever reason I was absolutely positive that one day Apple would expand to Verizon, which I’m confident they will. They would be stupid not to. Verizon would make them billions! On top of what they already have made with AT&T.
And AT&T has every reason to sweat, the reason why they are fighting so hard for another few years of exclusive rights is because they know they sell their iphone customers sh*t on expensive china. They have that wonderful technological creation but their service is wack. And if Verizon gets it I am sure that AT&T will lose MANY customers, why stay with a crap ass service when you can have the same phone with the best service there is in the US.
Also, if you guys are worried about Verizon’s phones being outdated, you shouldn’t really be that concerned; you’re going to get the iphone anyway.
Yea Verizon’s plans may be a little pricier, but hey you get what you pay for, isn’t that right you AT&T guys?! ;)

  21. lilycat says:

I would rather see iphone for T-Mobile. Their plans offer the best rates, their customer service is friendly and efficient (they are always nice to you, and actually do what they promise!), and I have had no problems making (and keeping) calls anywhere in the USA. TMO has the iphone in Europe; Apple should just expand on that relationship by moving the iphone to T-Mobile in the USA also.

  22. CDC says:

    Wow.

I bet people that write apps for the Iphone are wetting their pant$. That is a whole new large market for app buyers if Verizon carries the Iphone.

I think the apps are the main reason everyone wants the Iphone. There are a zillion!

  23. Todd says:

Obama should make sure this happens. Send Rom Immanuel’s and his crew to AT&T to do what he did for the Unions. Rom got Chrysler and Fiat together. Rom can Apple and Verizon together.
Forget health care, forget Officer Gates, every man, women, and child should have a constitutional right to a iphone without AT&T. I am pro-choice, we all should have a choice of which iphone carrier we choose, including Verizon. This should be Obamas highest priority.
I bought an iphone and took it back the same day. I couldn’t make a call from my own house. Do we live in America!
Please send letters to the White House with your horror stories of how bad your life is without an iphone and how you wish he would step in and that you can make calls without the shame and humiliation of make calls with a substandard cell phone. It seems to be working for the healthcare debate. Maybe the government should take over the cell phone business, then, if successful, move to the health care. With the medical apps on the iphone, one can make the argument that an iphone on the Verizon network would have a positive impact on the health care system.
All I want is a iphone on the Verizon network. Is that to much to ask for?
Why buy an iphone with AT&T. Just buy an itouch, its the same thing. You can’t make a call on either.

  24. Junaid says:

what this means is the possiblity of the cdma iphone being flashed to other cdma networks

  25. Jeremy LR says:

I hope Iphone does comes to Verizon wireless because AT&T has poor quality signal in alot of areas where verizon wireless does have alot better signal and better plans than at&t its about time for a chance and I have AT&T and Iphone with them but its time for a chance.

  26. Taylor says:

To the people that think Verizon is the grandparents choice in Cell network and AT&T is where it’s at… Little do you know that Verizon has been rolling out LTE in EVERY major cit for the past 2 years getting ready for the 4G war. They are much farther ahead than ANY network including Sprint that already has enabled their WiMax technology. The iPhone is just the start. The new Blackberry Storm is an LTE device as well as the HTC Touch Pro 2 (ROM not yet updated for voice packeting). Verizon is still publicly projecting 2010 as the launch date I can tell you that a national roll out could happen sooner. Just unlike AT&T that has a network full of dropped calls and glitches in their GSM technology, Verizon has been working tirelessly to make sure that they will have enough available bandwidth available on their 700MHZ spectrum to push the upwards of 60Mbps connections to their new 4G devices.

  27. JHC says:

As somebody who was with VERIZON for 10 years and was happy. Who is now somebody who was given a 32 gig iPhone 3GS and switched.

I am in the Los Angeles area.
Here is the deal. Verizon has great coverage. IMHO the only phones they had that were worth a darn were the blackberries. I was a Berry user.
OK ATT sold cool phones that generally were operational on any GSM network world wide. An advantage to some. (BTW once you experience gsm im places like ITALY or the UK you begin to understand what good coverage is about.)

OK early on when all cell phones were TDMA and CDMA cell towers were much further away from each other and phones ran at MUCH higher power levels. The ATT (part of it anyway) is that when they switched to GSM they did not add enough towers (gsm is LOW power and needs more towers to achieve good coverage).

Keep in mind that Verizon was NEVER going to get the iPhone. For one thing Verizon wants to make money from things like app store sales. They have had their own version for a LONG time. Verizon likes to turn things like GPS access for end users OFF unless you PAY for it. I don’t believe this works for apple of the majority of end users.
APPLE only wants to build ONE phone with ONE technology.
OK so LTE comes along. Both Verizon and ATT will operate on LTE within 5 years. The iPhone will go LTE soon likely as a LTE/GSM phone. Since Verizon will have an LTE network up and running before ATT they might just get the LTE/GSM iPhone before ATT.
I doubt that APPLE will allow Verizon to fiddle with the hardware.
I will have no problem running to (back to) verizon for the LTE iPhone. I have a feeling that there are literally MILLIONS of ATT end users who will JUMP ship at the very first opportunity.
ATT will become a very unhealthy company and will become absorbed by verizon wireless within 5 years. IMagine a Verizon with all of ATT’s bandwidth added to their own to create the best 4G and 5G networks in the world.
Like it or not in the end it won’t matter. sooner or later your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gen iPhone will not even work except in backwards third world African countries.
Untill then enjoy the service you have. Generally my iPhone is fine 95% of the time roaming around Los Angeles.
There are times I miss my Berry BUT they are few and far between.
If you want an Iphone Just go get one. If you just want a phone (boring) that is going to work and don’t care about having the most versital and advanced communications device available then stick with Verizon Wireless.
Oh and BTW ONe thing is sure 2 way video like phone to phone live real time video is JUST AROUND THE CORNER. This will require better bandwidth, but just as soon as it is available all phones will be able to send and receive live video. This is truly the telephones KILLER APP.
Apple must be working on this.
They must also be working on a version of the Iphone for the CAR. Really I would LOVE an Iphone with a 5 inch screen built into my car. NAV, music, internet, internet radio, apps….. $500.00 Come on this is truly a no brainer. The question is what is apple waiting for?

  28. Verizon says:

I don’t think we well get the iPhone for verizon

  29. mklein says:

AT&T’s 3g network is a joke…Verizon has a FAR superior network, only their phones suck. Verizon is using 2010 to focus more on the making their phones more appealing to the user and not just plain, old phones. They have alot of new models coming out this year along with the Storm 2 (which they fixed the freezing up problem). I have had Sprint, AT&T, nextel, and cingular…and now have verizon. While Customer Service sucks with verizon…and you can’t take a pee without having to re-sign a 2 year contract, to say they don’t have the best network is laughable. If they get the iphone, and make the rest of their phones more stylish and user friendly…they will steal alot of AT&T’s business…along with every other carrier.

  30. Zane says:

I have been with Verizon for over 8 years and to this day still have excellent customer service.. I really dont understand from may experiance how some many have posted that they have poor customer serivce. I do agree however that verizon is behind the game in cell phone asthetics.

  31. al says:

AT&T is a much better positioned company and a far better wireless company than Verizon. I have an Iphone with AT&T and love it and AT&T! Verizon is starting to charge $350.00 termination fee and the Droin cannot sinc with your pc to download music… I was with Verizon for 7 years and I have to say I am very happy with AT&T !!!

  32. Nick Powers says:

Ok, anyone out there who says att is better than verizon…is either mental or knows squat about servive and coverage. Att SUCKS!!!! Its Balls!!!!!! If apple made an iphone for verizon it would make so much money and att would drop dead! Seriously though. If apple is smart they will make a verizon iphone… but we will find out…

  33. Jake says:

Ohk!!!, AT&T is soo bad! Verizon Wireless is the best service!! If the Iphone come to Verizon than AT&T will have no more coustomers the Iphone will make so much more money if they come to Verizon!!!

  34. Ike says:

Verizon has great survice with horrible 3g coverage; u cant multi-task, u cant connect to anything but search engines like yahoo or google. It has more coverage but thats all u can say if At&t covered more than bigg cities then everyone would have it. bottom line u have Verizon cus u live in a shack in the middle of nowhere. And i really dought the iphone will push people to Verizons laggy slow connection and 80 percent of the people Verizon dont like the iphone and the other 20 percent are poser and really wants At&t..

  35. CB says:

Im glad verizon is getting the iphone because I have Verizon, but I just ugraded from an iPod Nano 4g to the iPod Touch 3g, so I gotta upgrade to the iPhone when Verizon gets it, wonderful =/

  36. The Truth says:

OMG!!! Its so annoying to see people talk so much and know so VERY LITTLE! Do your research. First of all the first person to say that AT&T had more customers than verizon is an idiot!!! Next, for everyone who thinks that AT&T and Verizon are going to be competing with Sprint in the 4G Network, your crazy! Sprint is the FIRST and ONLY carrier to be on 4G. AT&T and Verizon are just now getting used to 3G, when sprint has been on 3G forever! Yes they have their “LTE”, which is garbage! When it comes to Data services, sprint has been leading the industry since the beginning. I have had every cell service in the U.S. and from experince and knowledge Sprint is the best! Its true, the only reason why AT&T has customers is because of the IPhone and peoples obbssesion with millions of apps. But guess what?, there is now the Android network, which F****** ROCKS! And even better, most of the apps that you get on the IPhone are on the android market for FREE! I have Sprint now and will be with them till the END! The only reason you shouldnt have sprint is if you dont get coverage in your area. Other than that GET Off the IPhone’s jock strap and switch to sprint for the HTC Hero! By the way… I work for Verizon.. so go figure ;) … The Truth!

  37. gino says:

not a fact but if you ask me not happening for a long time.

  38. Ashley says:

Verizon…hurry up and sign on… we are ready to purchase to new Iphones right now….we are waiting to upgrade until we find out whats going to happen.

  39. nici says:

Verizon is by far the best carrier. We live in the middle of no where and get service. However when my mother comes to visit she has at&t (iphone) and verizonBlack berry. And her iphones has only one bar and sometimes not even that…So lets face it verizon is the best service. At&t sucks. verizon never drops calls.

  40. tori walker says:

ok verizon has better coverage yes that is true att has good phones yes and a lot at that why dont they just merge and has both good phones (iphone) and better couverage not sayin that vsw should not have the iphone because i sure do want one!! but that they should merge or just share the awsome\stupid phone and get it over with i hate how ppl are always showin off the stupid thing and ack like ppl with out it are poor or arent cool and caught up with todays new fad iif they both hasd the phone just about half of more of america would get it and make more money for apple and we all know that apple would love that because it is such a large company and i am not switchin over just cuz att has the iphone dont get me wrong i want one just as bad as the next person so yes they should just get it over with and sign that stupid contract now not tommorrow but they should have done it now

  41. Vivian says:

    AT&T AT&T AT&T AT&T AT&T AT&T AT&T

  42. Martin says:

they should make the new iphone into a dual gsm/cdma, an example is the blackberry storm, its both gsm and cdma capable, the service is up to you

  43. randy says:

All I know is that 2 months ago we had a tornado in my area and everyone in my neighborhood was trying to call out to their family and friends, and my Verizon Phone was the only one that worked. All the other cell phone carriers were down. I was loaning my phone to everyone to use. Verizon has a far superior network than any other carrier. It is not about the phone; it is about the network!!! Will it work when you need it!!!

  44. Barbara says:

I’m sorry, but I don’t a good opinion of Verizon. My calls were dropped 50% of the time. Not only that, they over charged me regularly. Also, they had no idea what they were talking about when I called at least 20 times for help. One employee even told me, on the phone, he was quitting because they are pushed so hard to make money. He said they’re even told to say anything they have to say to get customers. I believe it because it’s not the first time I’ve heard this. DO NOT use Verizon!

  45. Jack says:

Verison? NO WAY! I have never been treated so poorly and their coverage isn’t worth the trouble. It’s a classic BIG COMPANY BULLY. I’ve tried them all and this one is by far the worst!

  46. Jule says:

with gsm, your phone can get stolen way too easily.

I applaud the efforts of verizon adapting the iphone. People say that its too little too late for verizon. Its not like verizon rejected the possibilities of obtaining the iphone. Apple had a contract with at&t and they have to assimilate the iphone for cdma. It would cost alot for apple to produce it but its worth it on the endrun because there are many anticipating customers.
I just can not wait for the competition, Apple versus Android.

  47. Tommy Knocker says:

You Verizon fanboys are nuts. Verizon was at the time of the iPhone introduction, a CDMA network only. CDMA/EV-DO and GSM/HSDPA are not compatible technologies. A GSM phone, such as the iPhone, will not work with a CDMA network. Apple wanted and wants “one phone” to be able to be used world wide. Having both a CDMA and GSM phone, each with different feature capabilities, would be a software nightmare with having to create two separate “App Stores” for each phone’s software.

Verizon probably would also have demanded that their iPhone have an ugly red Verizon logo emblazoned at least 3 places on the phone and that users could only get multimedia content from the Vcast store and no way to get your photos off the phone unless you jump through Verizon’s pay per hoop to get them. Hopefully LTE will make the world a better place for all and cell phone carriers stop nickel and diming people every time they look at our phones wrong.

  48. GARRETT says:

Yeah I cant wait to see how having hundreds of thousands of iphones on that AMAZING network of verizons pans out.. It will be a disaster and i guarantee atleast half the network will crash in the first year and all those aircards and mifi become speeds conmperable to dial up.. I have no doubt that is exactly what will happen. The amount of data phones on at&t doubles any carrier and theyve done well under the stress.. Good luck verizon you will need it..

  49. Chloe says:

yo, it is taking them forever to put this phone out they been thinkin about this since like last summer

  50. MsB says:

Where I live AT&T is basically unusable. Hubby had AT&T for his work phone for a few years and he had dropped calls all over the state. He would always have to carry his private verizon line just incase.
