Did you know that there are roughly twenty-five Bluetooth profiles? iPhone only supports the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) and Headset Profile (HSP). You’ve heard my bellyache over the lack of support for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). If supported, these two profiles would stream music wirelessly from the iPhone to any supported Bluetooth headsets (i.e. Etymotic ety8) or wireless HiFi speakers (i.e. Com One Bluetooth Speaker System). Well, I’m back again with another Bluetooth bitch session.

Parrot finally sent me their new 7-inch Photo Viewer. Nearly every single Bluetooth-enabled phone on the market supports the Basic Imaging Profile (BIP), File Transfer Profile (FTP), and Object Push Profile (OPP). Guess what? iPhone can’t send images to the Photo Viewer. Why? Because iPhone’s Bluetooth is either extremely dumb, crippled or both.

While I’m on the subject, not that I would ever want to use dial-up networking over EDGE, iPhone doesn’t support the Dial-Up Networking Profile (DUN).
Am I alone or are you pretty p----d off too?

Apple thought ahead and made it so you can only use their product with the I phone. It’s pretty obvious but still bs.
BTW – Even thought the iPhone supports Hands-Free Profile, it appears it does not do a great job with it. I’ve been using my iPhone with my car’s hands-free capability and the voice quality is so bad I can’t use it to make/receive calls. The two other phones I use with my car work fine.
Definitely both, dumb AND crippled.
And what about not supporting WAP, this product needs some serious reviewing! Regret buying it.
What are you trying to tell me I cannot send pictures or music from my nokia e65 to my iPhone? If so that’s really quite bad. Can someone please help. All my iPhone does is says it’s searchn for devises but nothing seems to happen. I don’t know y iPhone does this as this feature will just put people off buying stuff from iTunes.
Iphone bluetooth has relased!!!!
File transfert with bluetooth to pc, mac and phone!!!!
Visit Cydia and search ibluetooth!!!
I love the fact that i can do almost everything i did with my sony ericsson phone Plus go on the internet……….. what i regret is buying this piece of shit phone……..
I just spent 100 bucks on a bluetooth headset i can’t use because i just found this website telling me that the iphone doesn’t have Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) which i need for listening to music…….
i hate Steve Jobs……..
Ease up……. A2DP will be in the iPhone 3.0 next release this summer. Just wait and enjoy….. It will be free for iPhone 3G (2.0) users
Will SIM Access Profile (SAP,SIM) be available in iphone firmware 3.0 too ? Does anyone knows this ?
I cant believe I bought an iphone…its utter crap
I cant:
receieve photos/music/anything from other phones
forward text messages
export contacts from iphone to sim
no video recorder
transfer songs from my music folder on my pc to iphone
has a crap text predictor
etc etc
I should have stuck with my nokia
Rubstar, don’t be such a tool. The 3g’s been out for damn near a year, and it’s no secret that those functions you listed were missing. You’re either living under a rock, or too effin lazy to do even minimal research before buying a phone. If you DID know this stuff before you bought it (which you should have) you’re an even bigger tool than I originally thought…
Look, i researched the iphone and basically thought it was a complete piece of shite, until i found out that you jailbreak it, and then everything thats bad (ie missing) you get via cydia or uploading it yourself to the damn thing
I am sooooo peeevvvveeeed offf! No BT? I need BT functionality, and I need it now. Thank goodness I only bought 1 to test out. I wanted to buy over 250 for my students for teaching and learning … but not now!
This is an utter disappointment. I think it is all to do with GREED! They want EVERYTHING to go through WiFi because it costs. What are they thinking? What a BACKWARD step. Point me to a REAL 21st Century Mobile Phone/Shuttle device … I will begin marching …
Absolutely disgraceful…..
Just switched from a BBerry 8830 to an iPhone when my employer let me cancel my plan. I really think I’ve made a mistake!
I used the 8830 for dial-up networking, as a music player, and had it synched with my car stereo and stereo headset. Now my MacBook says that there are NO services available, and the car stereo won’t work through the Bluetooth interface.
The Blackberry supports SD cards, so the device is expandable. The iPhone – even with 16 GB will be out of date well before the phone contract is up.
I can’t believe that Apple would come up with such a brain-dead product!
Question, I have bluetooth car stereo, (Pioneer FH P 80 BT) and what I would like to know is if someone else who has a bluetooth car stereo or a car that comes with bluetooth… Does the Iphone work with it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Question, which profiles does the iphone bluetooth support now?
OPP, FTP, A2DP, AVRCP, and so on.
i love the apple iphones ipod touch like features internet bla blah.. however i do miss sending pic messages and multimedia bluetoothing was a big thing for me :((( it really sucks. so it is retarded and crippled id just go back to my other :( but ive used sooooo much money getting into this one.
Bishop,
I have the exact combination (i.e. Pioneer FH-P80BT and iPhone 1st generation) and it works like a charm!. Full control of the iPhone over the BT (Contacts download, Caller ID, etc) as well as from the USB for playing your music (you have the exact controls as you would if you had an iPod)
Great stuff…
I have a JVC KD-AVX33 and it connects to my iphone, syncs contacts and recent calls but the voice quality is so bad… it seems to degrade after some minutes of use to almost unbearable on the other side (in the car sounds fine, but I always get compla8ints about noise)…
Another problem is that I have to delete the pair in the stereo and reconnect the phone each time I turn the car off… that is really a pain.
Normally, I would just get in the car and the devices would just connect…. Now, it’s delete the pair, set the stereo to open a device, go into the iphone settings/general/bluetooth/connect/password… then they connect :-(
Does anyone know how to resolve these issues?
Oh! BTW, I am using the new iPhone 3.0 software and it has streaming audio!!! Sounds OK, but quality could be better.
I Completely agree. I so miss decent Bluetooth. I couldn’t even send my addy book from my old phone. All I checked when I bought it was that it had Bluetooth. You should have to be told thAt it is shit Bluetooth
I have a parrott Bluetooth device for my car and it works great with my I phone my hubby has one in his car to :)
little dissapointed with new software wanted video and voice control and can u bluetooth now with other phones ??
The remote SAP feature is what I am looking for for my car and it seems that the iPHONE does not support it. From the looks of it, it doesn’t seem that they are going that route. Considering that most high end car require that technology for the phone to work correctly why wouldn’t Apple invest in a little bit of firmware upgrade? At the price the phone costs, you would think it does at least as good a Job as Nokia, the phone that I had to buy because it supports rsap! Sadly, had to return the iPhone.
I have 3.0 software update and still there is no provision for transfering contacts to my car satnav headset/hands free phone. Are Apple plain stupid or is it just they don’t care?
Yes, the iPhone is cripled in more ways than one – even the update calander still does cater for going directly to a date. One can get there but what a rigmeroll traversing back and forth with the arrows. I needed to get back to 1856 and it took me nearly 5 minutes to do so on that blasted thumb wheel.
It would seem that every other mobile phone manufacturer has done their best to make things easy and Apple have gone out of their way to make things as hard as possible.
I have the same problem, and it’s really disappointing.
SAP feature is very important in Blue Tooth and it will work if you put the phone’s contacts into the SIM memory by other phone’s function but not the Iphone 3G. Here is how it works: I used my old Ipaq HP phone to import the phone’s contact memory into the SIM card memory then transfer the SIM card into the Iphone so it pick up all memory from the SIM memory into the iphone 3G. When I pair the device, 3G, with Blue Tooth Plug in a Mercedes system, the phone book transfer into the Command. If the SAP Blue Tooth is not support by Ipone 3G, phone book will not be transfer, only Hand Free feature will work. Iphone 3G did not have function to import phone contact memory into the SIM memory and it only has a read function. That is the reason you cannot transfer phone book into your Command because your SIM contacts memory is empty. All you need to do is to figure how to write your ipone memory into the SIM contact memory.
Two reasons Apple does not support a lot of the Bluetooth profiles;
1. They want you to subscribe to MoblieMe and pay extra to transfer your iPhone information to various computers (or use the crappy iTunes). Direct support through BT would circumvent that.
2. If you block every feature most people use you can limit the number of problems with software and virus. So then you can say your OS doesn’t have any problems (ie Apple can say they are better than MS, not that MS doesn’t do a good job of making crappy software too).
So don’t expect Apple to change their policy anytime soon.
By the way the 50,000 apps available for the iPhone; 90% suck or are poor substitutes for those that are included with the 3.0 OS. So touting 50,000 is just BS hype and frankly several of the included apps could have been implemented better. Apple should stop patting itself on the back so much.
Overall after owning many expensive phones in the last 2 years the iPhone still beats the shit of of every other phone on the market. Full BT support is annoying but not a reason not to own the iPhone.
i’ve just bought a brand new laptop and upgraded to an iphone off being a nokia fan for several years… downloaded an app called “remote” to work with itunes which seemed pretty cool at the time… not sure how its working cause the iphone doesnt want to pair with the laptop for anything else but fn itunes!
it must be a Miracle cause i would have thought it connected to itunes using my laptops bluetooth seeing that its doing it wirelessly!
Come on apple give us bluetooth capabilities! This proprietary dictatorship is why I never owned an iPod. My Insignia player rocks! Let’s me record off the radio, plays just about any type file,… Yeah the iPhone has some cool features, but I should be able to push files to and from my laptop. This has just ceased to be the be all end all. Now apple, I’m forced to buy another company’s product to do the things my iPhone won’t. score for your competition! I’m going now to see what Insignia can do for me.
Pairing with SAT NAV : Becker Z-205, I too have the iphone with latest 3.0 upgrade, and my contacts list paired straight away with utter ease to the Becker Sat Nav Z-205. The sat nav is one of the latest on the market, whether that has something to do with it ?????
I am not a fan of the iPhone, and think this will be my first and last apple product.
I remember queing up outside the BT shop at daft o’clock in the morning, only to get home and have to type all my contacts in by hand because of the sh1te bluetooth capability – it was then, after just 1 hour, that i realised i’d made a big mistake !!!
The only good thing i will say is the WIFI internet is used a lot, and i do like, but i bought a phone, not an internet tablet !!!!
And how about SPP? Now that the new iPhone OS 3.0 added support for A2DP and AVRCP, the phone can now accomplish what you wanted. But it can’t communicate with robotics projects as well as ANY other type of microcontrolled research and design projects. SPP is one of the most fundamental bluetooth profiles because its essentially wireless USB. it doesnt even have that. no iphone controlled lamps, toys, nothing…not without a computer running a server or a wifi network
i have waited 2 years for apple to come out with a device that allows me to play music without getting tied up in cables but am dissapointed that while it does play on my bluetooth headphones it doesnt allow control of the music….2 years later and still not impressed!
My Blackberry 8700 works GREAT with my Kenwood BT headunit in my car, but the iPhone is BAD. Never talk on the BT now, because the person on the other end of the call cannot hear me. Blackberry still works great, iPhone sounds like I am in a can.
Shouldn’t the iphones bluetooth be able to find other iphones? me and a few other people I know are not able to find each others iphones. seems kind of pointless to have apps that require bluetooth to send files to each other when the sh*t doesn’t work. Strange thing is, one buddy of mine was able to find his gfs iphone but hers is an older model.
I think in reguards to the crippled BT situation everyone should compain to the FCC or CRTC in your respective countries that the current situation is very close to a conflict of interest. By disabling key features we are forced into buying their apps to make thing work the way they do on any other BT capable cell phone. I’m sure a lot of people knew in the back of their minds that the A2DP feature was there all along on the 3G and proved to be true when firmware 3.0 was released. A simple task of sending a photo from your MacBook to your iPhone should not have to require cables, iTunes, iphoto or other 3rd party software. A simple drop and drag that is compete in under 30 seconds should be the case. I see that iPhone to iPhone photo apps. are suddenly available so why not MacBooks as well? It’s no wonder half the people jailbreak their phones. Thank you for hearing me out. Matt
Search on the AppStore 4 bluewave bluetooth is possible with iPhone!
MacBoy777 is right, but its useless if your friends don’t have iPhones
I’m thrilled with the Bluetooth function in my iphone and have found a great way to use it…
In my disappointment over that the airport express could not play directly from my iphone to my stereo system! And i was disappointed with the remote control functionality of my iphone dock, and found I hard to see what was playing from my sofa!! So I found a better solution!
I purchased the sony mbr100 http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/accessories/overview/mbr-100?cc=us&lc=en
the blutooth is stereo I saw an opportunity for the functionality I was after..
Connected it to my stereo system and made the Bluetooth connection to my iphone. So now I can play the music on my iphone on my stereo from the comfort of my sofa having my Iphone in hand and make a playlist on it at the same time… (and guest at my party don’t fiddle with my iphone)
This is the function the airport express is lacking, and the function that could have made it really great!
The only problem with iPhone is that it’s made by Apple. This may very well be my last Apple product ever. The people who make decisions at Apple are idiots and dictators.
This whole Bluetooth situation with the i-phone is rediculous! I have photos on my old phone from years ago that I can’t send over, including a picture of my dog that I tragically lost last year. I have had her picture as my display background since I lost her to remind me of her and now Apple wont let me have that! Great! I have had the i-phone all of a week and had nothing but trouble with it.
I wanted to buy a folding keyboard like the Freedom Universal, so I don’t have to carry a large laptop with me but now I see that HID and SPP are not supported. I guess the iPhone is not for people who work for a living. Where did I put that Blackberry brochure…
the more i use my iphone, the more i realise what a piece of s*** it really is
Just got the iphone 3Gs last week and have been actually enjoying it (i’m embarrassed to say this given all the fireworks in the above postings). I found your discussion since I have been trying to pair my ipaq 110 to the iphone. I actually got them to pair. The iphone knows about the pda and has identified and ditto the ipaq with the iphone, but i have not been able to connect them. It’s not clear to me that it’s not possible, just the security designations or something, but if I understand all the above rantings (no offense) I shouldn’t waste my time…your comments?
BTW: I guess that I am being naive, but I have the phone hooked into my home WiFi and have been using it in the home under the impression that I am not racking up hours on my cellular network. Am I really being naive or stupid? On second thought, maybe you shouldn’t answer that…
I have just purchased the iphone 3gs 3 days ago, but now i realise just like everyone else hear it is a piece if sh*t! I did check out the details on the apple site prior to purchase and there was no mention of how limited the bluetooth is, so i am feeling very cheated!. Surely there would be a upgrade available to use bluetooth to send a recieve pictures etc… ? If not then why isn’t apple making one, like right now!!! Give us what we want and what everyother phone offers as a standard feature and have been doing long before the iphone was here.
If you know of any upgrade of anything that would enable me to use my bluetooth to send and recieve picture etc please let me know.
bluewaves works great with other iphones for pictures and contacts still working on the music though
What a bunch of kneejerk whingers you are. The iPhone doesn’t have full Bluetooth (yeah, disappointing) and suddenly it’s “a pile of shit” and you all “wish you had never bought it”??? Just a slight overreaction! It’s got a shit camera too but I still think it’s one of the most amazing phones ever released.
To be honest, I’d be glad if you did dump your iPhones cos you sound like the idiots we get reviewing apps on the Store complaining that 59p is too much to pay and thinking Apple write all the apps.
the iPhone’s bluetooth is purposely “dumb” (as some IDIOTs call it). It supports all bluetooth protocols, apple havn’t got round to developing apps for them. delevopers can still write apps for all those protocols, but i don’t think any know about ^ that.
Original story needs updating. My 3GS DOES support Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). My entire contact is downloaded to my MyGIG in my car.
*Alfie
So apple is the idiot then!
Andrew, how did you manage that??
You are all idiots. You say it is a piece of shit because there is no certain functionality. There is not a phone on the market that can do all the things an iPhone can do, are you all hoping for a utopian dream phone? If what is out there is so bad, go desing and build your own. Or are you too stupid to do that?
Seriously some of you are incredibly stupid.
Me, I don’t like the iphone, not because of it is shit, I just prefer a simple phone without all the added hoopla that is really not required for a normal human being.
