You know how sometimes companies who sell electronics and give them a good warranty or guarantee they do little things so that if whatever you come in needing fixed was caused by accidental damage done by you, instead of a hardware failure they can make you pay? Like for this example, cell phones that you have dropped in a puddle will show it with a little sticker that changes colors, usually next to the battery cover.

Well the iPhone and iPod Touch have those too, its just a lot harder to find unless you know where it is. Look down your headphone jack on either of those devices, and at the bottom of that well, you’ll see the sticker.

I am sure there are ways to circumvent it, but at the same time, its kind of crappy of them to put it in a place where a single drop of rain could cause it to change, but not cause any damage to the rest of the phone. Maybe if they hadn’t sealed the rest of the phone away from easy access they could have put it somewhere more practical. Regardless, you now know you can’t play off that canoe trip you took with your iPhone as a hardware malfunction, so don’t try it.

i had mi ipod in… well i have the same exact thing happen as briannaluvsyaa…. i didn’t turn it off righ away. so i told my mom and we are looking at thinkgs to do to fix it.. and my oppinion is to just stick it in rice.. pray… and hope for the best… i hope it works for me :)) good luck
Alrightie… I am yet another person that my itouch fell into the toilet. Thank god there was nothing in there. But it was under for like a good 15-20 seconds. The menu and power button work, but the touch screen will not respond at all.
I read all this and googled a few things.
What you need is some type of desiccant… Desiccants absorb moisture. Rice IS a desiccant, just the lowest grade kind. Silica gel is even better, which packets of it often come in new jackets, shoes, purses, some new bottles of pills, and many packages… google where to get it.
I work in a audiology office, we sell and repair hearing aids so we happened to have some desiccant products around the office. I took something we call a Dri-aid jar (if you want to find it it’s by a company called “safetouch” and the product name is “renewable dehumidifier kit for hearing aids”). Its a small plastic jar with a lid that has a little crystal packet inside. To use the product you take off the top and microwave the packet in the jar for about a minute and a half. I did this with two, I heated each one seperatley following the instructions, and then put them both on a plate to let them cool. Now i have the itouch sitting in a ziplock bag taped to the wall, so it’s standing up and moisture can drain out the headphone and usb jack, with the two cooled packets also in the ziplock sitting about 1/2 inch to an inch below the jacks.
It’s been in for an hour so far. I’ll put up another post in the next few days to saying if it worked or not.
….fingers crossed!!!!
I’m sooooooooooooooo siked right now, I’m friking dancing!!!
I left it upright in the ziplock exactly as I said for 8.5 hours and then took it out to check it. It was dead so I hooked it up to the USB on my computer. It took 5 minutes to charge before it powered on, I let it sit for a minute and then it started updating my library and my genius. I let it go and then tried using it, Touchscreen, speaker sound, wifi….. everything was great for about 5 minutes. The only things happening now are the volume changes by itself, which isn’t the biggest deal- I locked it to max in settings. And the menu button sometimes doesn’t work, the screen to shut it off pops up occasionally by itself, and doing the slide to unlock the touch screen is sometimes a bit difficult- you get it almost there and then it fights you and slides back. lol. I can smile a little because I’m happy I even got it to do this. But I am writing this 20 minutes after taking it out of the bag and playing with it. I’m gonna let it resync and charge then power it off and put it back in the ziplock with the desiccants pouches until tommorow morning. If anything good happens I’ll post it, I’m mad sympathetic to anyone with this problem.
im going to try it!! im hoping it works because its my moms nd if she finds out shes gonna kill me!!. ill post again if it works :)
i don’t understand how raw rice will help
rice helps suck out the moisture
My son dropped his iphone in the bathtub. After my husband yelled at him for a half hour, I looked on line about what we should try. I turned it off immediately and set in in a bowl of dry rice overnight.
Seems to be working OK today! Though time will tell.
my ipod touch fell in the bathtub… underwater for 20 secs i guess. shit scared if it gets ruined forever :( the screen doesnt respond to touch at all. volume adjustment doesnt work and now it just switched off even after having 70% battery. im gonna try the rice thing and hope it works(fingers crossed)(please god please let it work again!
yesterday after a half marathon run i did my touch (the touch was in a holster on my arm) afther that i put it in a normal bag and a drinkbottle (extran) in it .
I thought that the extran bottle was closed, but it wasn’t. phone and ipod touch both with the extran covered, directly in the train my girlfriend was trying to get it dry.what did work, put the touch off, and now one day later, the sound and the slight menu and the touch of the programmes still work.
I did read the topic and discovered that you had more and not easier problems with the touch. hope it will help for you all both.
kind regards,
Marino (from holland)
I have an iPod touch and it was exposed to very cold and then warm temperatures. The condensation which formed was enough to damage the power board (according to an apple genius). The thing is the symptoms for were exactly the same as what PrincessPuffinMuffin describes with the inclusion of no wifi connection available. The problems got steadily worse and unlocking it became difficult. I finally folded and paid £99 for my replacement as it was just out of warranty!
Just letting you all know what your problem might be if your iPod touch or iPhone has come in contact with water and has these problems.
Hopefully this is not the case :)
Regards,
Stuart
My iPod fell in the toilette >.< Yuckhhhh and now I just hope the rice thing works…everything works accept the stupid touch screen. The pink paper thingy in the headphone jack is well…pink xD So now the people will know its water damage! But ehhh…pleeeease rice workk!!!
UGH…EAIRLER I DROPPED MY IPOD TOUCH….IN THE NASTY TOILET..IT WAS IN THER FOR A GOOD 5 SECONDS I PUT IT IN COME RICE AND PUT IT OVER SOMETHING HOT…IM PRAYING TO GOD THAT THIS WORKS I DONT WANT ANY SIDE EFFECTS LIKE VOLUME GOIN BY ITSELF AND THE MENU BUTTON NOT WORKING I WANT IT TO BE JUST THE WAY IT WAS…(HOPING TO GOD)
i left my itouch on the vanity in the bathroom, woke up the next morning to find that some family staying over had had showers, condensation from the shower pooled all around the itouch (which was on its side, leaning on a handtowel) so the edge was laying in the water, i notcied that there was water inside the screen and it wouldnt turn on.
I just got home, so its been like this for at least 12 hours, so i put it in rice, hope this fucking works, my ipod is my life, ill update this if it works or not. It should work though, been looking round and people who have dropped theirs in the toilet have gotten it to work, mine is nothing compared to that and ill also check the sticker indicator in the speaker to see if it went off, no water got in there so hopefully it will still be under warranty, fingers crossed….
I let my dad use my ipod touch and i went outside to paintball with my friends and when i came back i found it on his bed, I grabbed it and tried it out but the screen has all the pink and white lines up and down it. Today (after letting it dry up a little) it sort of works but the backlight wont come on and… OHH ITS SOSOSO ANNOYING!! hoping I can fix it, thanks for the help!
Peter
I usally getting cold fingers, when i use my touch screen. But somehow the screen won’t response! :@ Can this be enough reason to send it back to Apple?
So I bought this stupid Craddle for my iphone 3GS 16GB that you stick to the window of your car. It was a cool little accessory. lasted for about a 2 weeks w no problems but then, the inevitable happened…….WATER DAMAGE!!
I’m super freaking careful too, but not two days ago.
I was opening a txt from my roomate at a red light and when i took off for the green light, the damn thing fell off the cradle and landed somewhere on the floor….or so I thought.
A mile later at the next red light, I came to find that it had gone throught the lid of a white 32oz cup of lemonaide and straight into ice cold water. ( i am no longer drinking and driving!! texting is a different story! lol)
….so here i am, online figuring what to do.
First thing i did was shut it off and then wipped it off.
When I I got home, I dryed it some more.
I thought about sticking it in the dryer, but no, that wouldn’t help. the microwave? no. maybe not a good idea.
the oven? no, I don’t even know how to use that thing.
So what do? I stuck it in a 52oz cup full of rice overnite. the next day I tried to power it up, but nothing :( I stuck the USB to it and connected it to the computer. I got a picture!!! itunes came up. but the picture was of an arrow and the itunes logo. that’s it nothing else. I shut it off again. I wrapped it in a towel, the kind you use to detail a car, and drove with it in my dashboard all over phoenix (80 degress), hoping that it’ll dry out. And it did, the camera eye dried out, but i din’t turn it on.
I did more research and decited to stick it back in rice for two days straight. 24hrs have gone by. this time tomorrow, we shall see the result……
2 days ago my iphone fell in the toilet right away i got it out & dried it & shook it so the water came out & with the cold blow dryer i was blow drying it. That night it was ok.. Sencond day it was also ok & today its just stuck! the apple logo is lighted up & keeps turning on & off!! i keep messing with it but im hoping it works!! i called apple & they said they wont be able to fix it if it has water damage & i have to buy a new one!! NOOOOOO hope it works!!!
I dropped my iphone 3gs in the toilet, only had it for a week. I am not sure what is responsible for getting it to work again but tried most off the things on the internet and said i will post my experience too cos they helped.
It kept turning on and off, so for those that said dont put it on, it was kinda hard. I put it in front of my blow drier for some hours (it eventually went off) I put it in rice for like 14 hours (couldnt stop taking it out tho)
i got the apple logo screen after a while, then white screen that shut off, i did the hold the on/off button and menu button for 10 secs and it prompted me to connect to itunes which asked me to restore my phone and eventually gave me an error 29 message which i had to download a QuickPwn software (google this) to force it to restore. (i lost all apps and everything on my phone, but didnt mind as it was quite new).
It wasnt reading my sim card, so took it to apple, guy went to check and immediately said there was water damage, but my sim tray was stuck (maybe with rice) so he took it out whatever it was and phone now works well, still have a loose sim tray, so stuck a bit of paper in behind d sim card and all seems well.
Note iphone 3gs has water sensors inside it in addition to the ones outside so no point cleaning the outer ones. Anyways phone now works, i tried most things i found on the internet, except jail break etc.
I hope this helps somehow!
Per my posting ( March 31, 2010 at 8:47 pm )
…..on the fourth day, I took the phone out of the rice. It did not power up. I plugged it into the USB on my PC and it gave me the image of itunes and a plug in. It then showed my background. (the one in start up when it ask you for you password) but it said ‘emergency call only’ and it didn’t give me the original option to log in using my password. The screen was still damaged. you could see the water between LCD layers.
So i took the day off and went to Apple Store. The people asked me to sign up to get help and that i would most likely have to buy a new phone and they would take this one and sent it to Apple. I didn’t like that option.
While I was waiting for help I hopped in one of their computers and went to good old Graigslist. Talked to to local shops. Decided to have them check out the phone and if nothing else, but a new one.
First shop charged me $10 to look at it. 30 min later said that my motherboard was fryed and i should get a new one. nothing they could do. suggested i should sell it on Craigslist for $50…..no way.
I still had hope so I checked out the other place way accross town.
This place looked more legit.
I told them what happend, told me that they could fix it and to give them 40 min. They opened it, got it up and running, asked me for my password. got in it and found my battery to be damaged – corroded and stuff. I would need a new one. That’s fine.
Also told me that the LCD has water damage, it would work fine but it would be annoying to look at w the watter damgage in between the layers. They had one last LCD in stock and I told the them to change it. 10 minutes later, my phone was back to life!!!!! :D I was freaking thrilled!
People where way professional and got the job done.
it cost me $129. Pretty good money but al least I didn’t have to get a new one. I didn’t lose my pics, contacts, apps, but did lose my music. all good, i have it in my PC anyways.
…….Lesson learned. Don’t have liquids near your phone and don’t give up on it. Screw the man and salvage your iphone.
and yes, I have a pink dot in headphone input and by the charger area but atleast I still have my phone. Salvage title lol
I dropped my iPhone in the toliet for bout 5 sec the power was on when submerged , so like a dumb ass I paniced and hit the wake button it was still on 5 min later nothing but a black screen , so I went to my local family dollar and bought a bag of long grain dry rice ( for a dollar ;) ) and sat the phone in a rubber made wide tupper ware of rice with the lid off on the window sill with the sun hitting it I was eager to Try to power it on but I waited 3 days on the third day I tried and nothing so I figured maybe it was dead so I plugged it in to the computer ,,, there is a god it worked everything was working just as before sound, touch, calls, . I believe that patience and dry rice was all I needed. Hope all of u have the same luck.
okey dokey…my problem with my itouch 32 GB is simular and different…im only a teenager with a stupid cat who knocked my itouch in the sink when i was listening to it while washing my face…i got it out within 5 seconds max…i immediately dried it off, cried cuz its only a few months old, then did the alternative thing…test to see if its working…the screen was dim and showed up, time was correct, song was still playing but no volume…and it wouldnt let me slide to unlock it…so my mom told me to put it in a bowl of rice to dry for 24 hours. So im about to freakin piss my pants cuz that thing is my life!!! facebook, email, music, and more! all gone!!!!! Now that im researching, it seems like ppl who had worse problems with theirs is working okayish…hope mine works!!! im praying with my fingers crossed and hoping to God that he lets this one slide…i have terrible luck! And for people who have soaked phones…my 23 year old brother jumped in the pool with his phone, immiediatley took out the battery and dried it and the phone and set it in rice for like 3 hours…took it out and it worked fine…then a week later that dip wad did it again lol…and his phone still works! of course he had to do the same thing again with the battery…so i hope this fixed anybody’s problem and if anyone has any sujestions on what to do with my ipod touch, pllllleeeeaaaaasssseeee let me know!!!!
in the night I must have knocked over my glass of water because two of my books are wet and my iPod touch (sitting on top) was wet and now doesn’t work.
I’ll try the rice thing, hope it works :)
i was going to the bathroom after school and when i came out i set my backpack on top of a sink, not noticing that the freaking sink was plugged and full of gross murky water, after washing my hands i finally noticed and pulled my iPod touch and phone out, no luck with my stinking phone, but my ipod will light up, and after 2 hours of fiddling around with it, and restoring it the touch screen barely works, everything else seems to work fine. but the dangg touch screenn.. I don’t think its going to be covered in warranty, but i guess i could try lying my butt off. WELL off to see the apple genius.
i dropped my ipod in the washer today for like no more than 3 seconds. i took it out and tried to turn it on because it had turned off. it didnt turn on so now im trying to put it in rice overnight. Im praying to God right now that it works. If i works ill post up another one. PLease God help me!!
Ohhhh my!!!!!!!!! Thank you God so much!!!!! My iPod is alive and it works perfectly!!!!! I can’t believe it I’m so happy!! I just left it in a rice bad overnight and today when I got home from school I kept trying to turn it on but I wouldn’t. I plugged it in the charger and it started to get hot and then I took it out. A few mins later it turned on and the blacklight ddnt work. After using it with no black light my iPod light turned on! Now the sleep button an speakers don’t workbut I’m glad everything else is. I still have warranty and it doesn’t show water damage^_^!!! thank you God! It’s a miracle
i just dropped my itouch in the tub and it was on so i can’t turn it off so i put it in rice and can’t wait to see if it works
Fuck rice! Shit dont work. And Fuck gotronics in Scottsdale AZ. They are worthless.
Well it’s been about 3 1/2 weeks since my phone was brought back to life with sum rice , still working perfect , I hope u guys have the same luck (advice) don’t be too eager too see if it wrks I believe 3 days is a suffeciant amount of time to wait b4 powering it on or pluging it in, water and electricity don’t mix and I believe it can cause more damage to the phone. -DES

Hi,
I was a little drunk and went swimming with my iPhone in my pocket. Maybe 10 mins later i realised, when i took it out of the water it was completely switched off and vibrating. It was burning hot and vibrated for about an hour. Now its completely dead. Any ideas?? I think ill try out the rice thing but its a long shot, it was in water for way too long… Please help. Its brand new..
so last night i had my itouch in my back pocket. it fell into the toilet! i grabbed it out in about 20 sec. and it wouldnt turn on. so i plugged it in on my ihome and i could barley see the screen. it worked i just couldnt really see the sreen. so i blow dried it and turned it off. then i tried turing it back on and it didnt work! i was crying for soo long! that thing is my life! so i put it in a bowl of rice overnight.. it still isnt workig. ill give it another day, and if it doesnt work ill try hanging it up in a ziplock bag. i hope it works! the itouch was seriously my LIFE! i cant even go a few hrs with out playing on it. plz pplz plz plz work!
i droped my iphone and the back fell of and i cant get it back on again and ideas i only got it last week helpppppppppp
I tried everything to get my iphone to work after a small incident with a toilet bowl. I used rice, silica packs, blow dryer, towels in the sun, etc. My brother-in-law told me about the ifixyouri website he used for his broken screen. I called them up and they walked me through the website and I over night fedex shipped it to them. I really wanted my iphone to work again, because like an idiot I never backed it up in iTunes. Well, I just received it back in the mail and…………….IT WORKS!!!!!! So, I am recommending them to everyone. I am soooooo happy. Good luck!!!!
I dropped my iphone in my bowl of soup it was only in there a few seconds and it stayed on. Like a dumb but I checked to see if it was still working and it was. Well a few seconds later it showed the apple on the screen and it went black. It would not come back on so I plugged it into the computer and itunes said it was in recovery mode so I did a restore and it vibrates and rings but the screen is completely back. I took the screen off and it didn’t look wet. And the sensor in the head phone plug is still white. Can someone tell me if it is toast……Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello, I have been viewing your website for some time now and read most or your entries. Is there any way that I can subscribe so I get updates sent to my email? Cheers
So last week i dropped my ipod in progresso soup. i was bawlling my eyes out and wasnt thinking rash (who would? thats my baby!) and once i got it out of my soup, it flickered off. now me being a dumb 14 year old teenager, i started flipping out and turned it on. the screen flickered on and then it quickly died. there was moisture ALL inside of it and it was seeping out the sides into my hand. I gave it to my mom who put it in a tub of rice for about 3 days, and about two hours ago, i pulled it out, plugged it into my computer, and shockingly enough, the son of a bitch had the charge symbol on it. The only thing wrong with it, is the backlight is fried, the speaker is fried, and the volume buttons dont work. but supprisingly, all my apps are still on it, and the battery holds a charge. i just have to hold it under a bright light. the moral of this story is “parents, please dont let 14 year old pubescent boys use there ipods while eating chicken soup.” ;D My parents are ordering a new LCD and a speaker. ill try to reply and tell how my success is.
i dropped my iphone in water right now was working but then …i disconnected it and them after a minute ….DEAD .. :@:@ I WAS SO HAPPY :@:(
I dropped mines today in the bathroom, it worked for a while but suddenly the touch wasnt working at all, the screen came white and couldnt use it.Now i have putted the ipod touch in the rice method thing and i hope i fix it, my mother would kill me if she knows :O.
same thing happened to me as “fml…” please hurry up and post your resultm haha:). condensation is the most retarded way to get your ipod wet!
Dropped my ipod touch yesterday in the toilet. Didn’t know you weren’t suppose to turn it on, so I tried. It was dim, so I tried to charge it. My mom told me to take it off the charger right away and let it dry. Now it doesn’t work at all. What can I do? Is it too late to put it in rice? HELP!!!!
i put my ipod in my sisters car because i was going int a store i forgot it was there. my sister poured a 32 oz. of water on it idk how long it stayed there butt she came to me the next morning and sai i think your ipod is dead cuz my cup tiped over. I let it dry out and put it upword. got back home been about 14 hours put it in charger hope it fu**ing works now im so pissed at her

i i left my ipod im my pocet and went swimmin :( and it wount charge or turn on any one have any advice?
Reading these stories is kind of depressing. As I too dropped my brand new 2 week old 32. gb iPod touch in the toilet. For about 5 seconds I stood there in shock just scared shitless. I retrieved it and started to play an app. Acting like nothing happened, the screen was flashing and the iPod got really hot and I heard a pop. I turned it off and waited and then turned it back on and everything was fine except no wifi. I checked the water sensor and thanking god it was still white!!!!! The next week I went to the genius and he gave me a brand new 32gb iPod touch!
Well my 2 year old son peed on my itouch:-( i wiped it off as soon as it happened im trying the rice thing also
I HAVE A 16 GB IPOD TOUCH IT WAS IN MY HOODY POCKET WHEN I WAS RUNNING TO MY CAR COS IT WAS RAINING IT ONLY GOT MILDLY WET BUT THE BACK LIGHT STOPPED WORKING I LEFT IT TO DRY OVERNIGHT GOT UP AND THE BACKLIGHT IS WORKING BUT MY THE TOUCH SCREEN ISN’T RESPONDING AT ALL EVERYTHING BAR THE SCREEN WORKS PLEASE HELP…………. THANKS
I got a ZuneHD =)
In Nov 2009 I left my iPhone on the back of the toilet, as I wanted to take a bath but was expecting a call, anyway, it slipped into the toilet, it glugged as it went down, air bubbles came up, I knew it was time to start grieveing, I fished it out, after a momentary pause during which I contemplated the disgusting business of putting my hand in the toilet (unused mind),I switched it off hoping, wrongly, that doing so might limit the damage, well, it flickered multicoloured lines and then conked out. Everything seems to work except the screen which is completely unresponsive, Ive been told the motherboard is fried by a mobile phone shop and, after an unsuccessfull attempt to fix the phone by replacing the screen, apple told me to do a trade in, i.e. they give me a new phone for £139 and keep mine apparently for recycling, needless to say, I dont want to lose my messages, pics, contacts etc … as I complacently didnt back up anything, I therefore declined apples offer, I’m trying the rice method, if it works it will be a miracle, will report back.
HELP ME…. my ipod got wet and i heard that you want help the iPod with rice. so you want me to put my ipod and rice in the same bag?
HELP ME…… PLEASE
