You know how sometimes companies who sell electronics and give them a good warranty or guarantee they do little things so that if whatever you come in needing fixed was caused by accidental damage done by you, instead of a hardware failure they can make you pay? Like for this example, cell phones that you have dropped in a puddle will show it with a little sticker that changes colors, usually next to the battery cover.

Well the iPhone and iPod Touch have those too, its just a lot harder to find unless you know where it is. Look down your headphone jack on either of those devices, and at the bottom of that well, you’ll see the sticker.

I am sure there are ways to circumvent it, but at the same time, its kind of crappy of them to put it in a place where a single drop of rain could cause it to change, but not cause any damage to the rest of the phone. Maybe if they hadn’t sealed the rest of the phone away from easy access they could have put it somewhere more practical. Regardless, you now know you can’t play off that canoe trip you took with your iPhone as a hardware malfunction, so don’t try it.
Your iPhone knows when it gets wet [via SlashGear]

So I accidently dropped my ipod touch in the bath and quickly recovered it in record time. I picked it up and started using one of the apps to make sure i still worked and within 8 sec the screen started to get lined. I have no idea what to do… has anyone had this experience before? If so did it get back to normal within a day or two? or will i have to take it in to the apple store?
em
yes if the indicator is white it will work if u take it in. however this thread is illegal… but who cares ;)
I dropped my 16gb iphone in the toilet… and dumb me, it got left in there for about 10 seconds while i couldnt believe that it had happened. i even saw it turn off in the water. I did the zip lock bag and rice trick… WORKS. just make sure you put in a heap of rice.
GOOD LUCK ALL, I KNOW HOW IT FEELS.
I submerged my itouch in a bath and I did the rice bag trick. It turns on, charges, and seems to work but the screen is so dim I can barely see it. Turned the brightness up all the way and no difference. My indicator is half pink so I know I cant take it in and even if I could I have had it since Dec 08 so I think the warrenty is gone. Any advice?
Thanks
k i was wasted with a friend walking downtown. she pushed me in the now n i was there for a second, my itouch was in the front pokcet of my bag. it worked the next day for like 15 minutes then went to shit. i also saw what looked like rain droplets in the back of the screen. i went to the apple store today n made an appointment for tmorrow morning. im tripping out. i dont know what ill do without it.
it sucks how dependant we are on technology
ne way, if ne one knows wat to do about it, lemme know?
First parade during Mardi Gras, and my iphone fell out of my back pocket and into the toilet. (clean water!) It was never fully submerged. I did the rice thing right there at the party and, a few days later its working. Sorta. I had to restore settings and was able to upload my backup, but now my touch screen won’t work in any way, shape or form. Oh yeah – my little water sensor dot is half-white, half-pink. It was a gift, so no warranty.
Any ideas? Please? I really miss my iphone. . . : (
So I was in England on vacation and it went through the washer in my shorts. It has been months but it will still not work. I took it in and the bastards caught the water damage. I did have a phone with the same problem that started working about 6 months later, so there is always hope. Dry it out and let it charge overnight.
well, my ear phones were in my back pocket and they got washed in the washing machine. Once I hooked them up to my ipod touch they still worked, but while i was listening to it moments later it just shut off. I tried to turn it back on and it wouldnt work I hooked it up to the computer didnt work.. HELP!! has this ever happened to someone will my ipod ever work agin?? Thanks…
i was cleaning my dogs water bowl and was going to put it back and my ipod touch fell out of my pocket in to the bowl, i quickly pulled it out and dried it off, hoping i saved it in time.

That sucks for all……get a hard case….i feel for ya tho….i try to keep mine away from trouble as much as possible….dont even leave the house with it if it looks like its gonna rain…haha
My iPod was a gift from my girlfriend, I put it on a chair next to my bed after listening to it and a few m inutes later heard a ‘plop’ and it had fallen into a single pint of water i had next to my bed. What are the chances.
Anyway at the time the screen still worked and i turned it off but now, about 5 days later it won’t turn on or charge. My girlfriend is pissed..
The submersion indicator has turned pink so I can’t get it repaired :(

feel for all of you. My ipod never worked 100% the first week i got it. Finally after hours on the phone with multiple apple techs they told me to send it in. I got it back with a form letter saying it had water damage but you can look down the jack port and see all white, no pink. Have I been “hosed” or what?! Seems to me they couldnt figure out what was wrong and dont want to take responsibility. PISSED!!!!
hello i was out with my mates on saterday and ir was all good untill i dropped my ipod touch in the river, i tried dryin it i thought it was going to be ok, but in the morning it wouldnt turn on now i think its broken have you got any idea how to fix this please help me!!!!
:(
I feel so stupid. I dropped my ipod touch in my bowl of Froot Loops. I freaked out and put it on my heater vent. Then I restored it and now it’s syncing. The backlight wasn’t working, but it is now. I want to say that there is little water damage to the screen, but really it’s milk damage. :] I’m just happy it’s working again. I’m just crossing my fingers that it won’t die.
Oh! I wrapped my ipod touch in a paper towel and submerged it in rice for like four or five hours. My mom said it would help absorb the water. And I guess it did cause it’s working now!
i dropped my ipod touch in the sink i recovered it in like 4 seconds becuase i was shocked and it works fine the thing is white but i cant hear anything when i plug in my headphones what should i do???would the rice trick work???
wtf retards! we wont help on how to fix the problem not ure lame ass sotries. has any1 got anyfin that works because that rice shizz is buillcrap
w88 i take it bak. i put my itouch in a bowl of rice above the boiler for a couple of days a it working sexyy. however the wi-fi dusnt work :( luv u all x
I dropped my iPod in a sink full of water, and pulled it out immediately. The sound wasn’t working at first, at all. So when I got home, I put it in a bowl of rice for about an hour. The sound started working again. Then it would say the battery was always full, so I would never know when it was going to die. Now it only charges halfway, and dies in like 10 minutes. iTunes won’t recognise it either, so I can’t restore it. I’m afraid to erase it all too, just in case that doesn’t work. Am I going to have to buy a new one? :( Can anyone helo me? I’ve searched everything, and nothing works.
Whenever I dropped my Ipod video into the toilet i quickly retrieved it and I thought that it was fried. But after I went off and bought my itouch, I checked the video to see if it would come on and it did. I looked inside to where you see if there’s any water damage, and the sticker wasn’t pink at all. So I would just wait until it dried up for maybe 24 hours to see if it worked.
This weekend, I dropped my ipod touch (only a few months old) in water – fully submerged. I pulled it out in record time, pulled off the rubber cover, only to not have it turn on – at all. Then, with the headphone jack down, I gently shuck the ipod up and down and got about 5-6 drops of water to come out. At that time, it turned on – but the touch screen didn’t work. Discussed, but also realizing that the charge plug area and the headphone jack were the only potential ‘drains’ for water, I propped it up vertical to dry for 24 hrs (just on my desk – no rice, heaters, etc). After 24 hrs – I was able to turn it on – but the battery had been drained (some how). After a full charged, I’m pleased to say that it now works – including wifi (tested by visiting website and streaming Pandora). It was dead, I even hear a weird ‘crackling’ at one time, but it appears to have made a full recovery.
I’m posting this simply to offer an optimistic post. It appears that the fluid indicator is part pink – so I know how lucky I am. Try gently shaking excess water out – and propping it up so the water drains down.
I wish you all the best – it’s a heck of a think to happen.
Hey dropped my ipod touch in the toilet! I got it back in like 10 sec. I took the hard cover off and stood it up over night. Then in the morning my sister told me about this rice thing. So now my ipod touch has been in a bag of rice for about 19 hrs. Will i get my ipod back. I’m having a hard time living without it!
I dropped my ipod in the toilet earlier this morning -.-
i grabbed it (gross, i know) and dryed it off a quickly as i could. i used a blowdryer like 20 minutes later, on warm, in all the open areas of it. The ipod was hot, and was making fizzing sounds… so i put in in the fridge for like 10 minutes. (whata retard! i know)
soo, about 2 hours later, i read about an indicator strip that turns red when it gets wet. so i get out my white nail polish, a toothpick and a flashlight.
it’s REALLY hard to paint the strip right… so i put a little cotton, and nail polish remover on the opposite end if the toothpick.
i havent taken it to the apple store yet, but it might work :)… hopefully.
:( I got drunk last night, wild party! walked home at 4am with my mates. We walked past a huge! puddle and jumped in got super wet. And now my iPod touch screen is dead i need help to fix it plzzzz whats this rice and bag thing? :D

i was gifted the ipod touch so no warranty…
well my housemaid washed my jeans(which i wore 4 days ago) today morning and my ipod touch was still in my back pocket of my jeans and it was soaked in water for about 2 to 3 hour… my ipod touch was out of charge.. and i didn’t charge my ipod touch since last 4 days well it was cause i couldn’t find it… so i think i wont have short-circuited it probably… but i m not sure of what to do with it… should i do the rice trick… does it really work… please assist me…
A cup of water spilled on my purse where my 2nd generation itouch was and it was already dead, but whenever i got the chance i plugged it up with a 4th generation ipod nano charger (dont know if this matters but yeaa..) and it came on and it was dim then the screen came to but was flickering for a second, for the time being the screen is okay. The home button occasionally will work and the sleep button triggers the volume button.. Im leaving it alone for a while to see if it will dry out cause it doesnt seem to have serious damage.. Any advice?
Hey.. i dropped my ipod in the lake for about 2seconds… in freezing cold water… I picked it up and it turned on and the sound works and everything.. everything is fine.. just that the Touch Screen doesn’t work…it stills shows everything but i can’t unlock it or anything cause the screen doesn’t recognize the my finger…so should i take it apart or what.. i can still sync it to Itunes and everything and it turns on like i said… just there’s water in between the screen and the Ipod..1st thing i did was put it in rice for a week.. didn’t work at all.. then dried just letting it dry with nothing just air.. still nothing..tried heat.. nothing..tried putting it in a ziplock bag so that condensation would evaporate the water.. nothing… soo my only option really is take it apart… if anyone out there has any info on doing that or any other ways of drying PLEASE i mean PLEASE contact me at
Huhn_1994@hotmail.com
plz.. if i find a way to fix it i will help u guys
I thought i was the only dumb ass that spilled liquid on his ipod touch.I actually spilled milk,i was taking my nephew to the daycare and i put his bottle of milk in my bag(the bottle had a lid),but apparently the lid was not functioning properly so milk spilled everywhere and some on my ipod touch.I cleaned up but i was an idiot and opened it to see if it was still working and i it was but i could not turn it off,it did not “recognize my finger”and then died.so now it is dead,i put it in a bowl of rice,it’s been almost two days.Until now i had no idea i was so attached to it.It is so weird not having it.Hope it is gonna come up but i do not know.Anyway for people who do not know the rice trick, here it goes:rice has a special property:it absorbs liquids.just put it in a bag of rice, should be fully covered. That is it,hope it works, hope it works for mine too
So I’m another idiot that got their iphone water damaged. Well, not mine.. the hubby’s.. erg
He told me to do his laundry, forgot to take out his phone, which he always does so I didn’t think to check.
Short end of it, it was fully submerged in the washer for a good 40 minutes. It wouldn’t turn on, I freaked right out, started searching anything I could online and here’s what I’ve found.
Everyone’s got the rice thing.. but I don’t think I’ve read anyone here who’s used the silica packs?? You’d be amazed at how absorbant this stuff is (our cats’ litter is made of this and definately no complaints about it! It’s crazy absorbant). Anyway, we’ve only had the iphone in rice since its happened (about 3 days now?). There was some water under the screen, after only a day.. that’s completely gone. We haven’t even tried to turn it back on yet as we want to make sure it’s totally dry first. We haven’t tried the silica packs yet, but might.. apparently they need to be “strategically” placed?? whatever that means, but we’ll give that a shot later this week if it doesn’t turn on. Odds are if it doesn’t turn on it’s totally fried. And worse of all, the water damage indicator is pink :( boo.
We’re kind of lucky though, since we both got Iphones.. I felt so bad I gave him mine. erg.. I LOVE my iphone so it’s hard to not have one. When we can get another upgrade we’ll get me one again, or pay to repair this one if it’s repareable.
Anyone know about paying 200-300 to get it repaired when it’s out of warranty? Read something about that too..
Sigh.. no iphone SUCKS! His was broken to begin with too and was about to send it in and get a brand new one! GAH! What are the odds..
I let my daughter borrow my itouch and she dropped it into the toilet. She was listening to music and had it in her back pocket. When she went to the bathroom she “forgot” about it and it slipped out and into the toilet. She pulled it out immediately but I think the damage is done. I have it in a glass with rice and salt all around. I hope it helps but from reading the other comments, I’m thinking it’s a lost cause. Has anyone actually had good results from putting it in “anything” after getting wet? Sounds like some have a second or two of power and then it dies again.
mild heat(airing cupboard etc) is still the best way to dry them out. BUT don’t try to switch them on until you have tried everything to dry in out first. If you have damp inside the last thing you want is electricity as well. it will just short out everything and finish it off. If the water indicator is show red/pink them your Apple warranty is void unless you took out full accidental insurance. firms like http://www.ukipodrepairs can sort some of the problems out cheaper than Apple.
i was on a raft in a canal & stupid me fell in, i had my ipod touch in my pocket so i took it out, took it home dried it with the hair dryer for about 20 mins and turned it off and left it for a week, i’v just turned it on an the sound and everythin is workin but the screen is white, iv put it in a bag of a rice in the airing cubord but, is my ipod scrwed premantly because the screen is white? please help!! x
what if I were to just put bleach or just a little white out down there on a tip of a pin or tooth pick? I don’t really care if it illegal, Apple screws us with their prices, why not screw them with our warranties?
Now that I think about- it’s not illegal unless you say it wasn’t in the water…
I went out on a canoe trip with my ipod like a idiot……..it was in a lake not any rapids or anything so i figured i could keep it safe in a ziplock bag and took it out to plug my headphones in and caught a fish and sat my ipod down in my bag and forgot!
I was rowing the canoe and a little bit of water splashed into the boat by or on my bag.
Its been black screened every since,I feel like a idiot…the indicator is half pink…what to do now…ebay for parts I suppose!
To all the people posting..If you just pull it out immediately and its still on, turn it off as quickly as you can. Then get a ziplock bag and put in a couple of those silica gel packs(4-5 is fine). Put your iphone/itouch in the bag, charger jack facing down. Seal the bag and leave alone for at least 24 hours. If it still doesnt work, idk what to tell you. But this worked for me.
so im another idiot that damaged their ipod touch with water.
i got my touch not even a week ago..about 10 minutes ago i had it on my lap with a glass of water on the floor beside the couch..i rolled over forgetting about the ipod and it fell into the cup of water top first so it was about half way submerged in water..the charger outlet and the headphone outlet were not submerged. the touchscreen does not sense my touch so i put it into a bag or rice.. what are the chances of it working again? it wasent submerged for more that 3 seconds. do you think that if i leave it alone in the rice for a while that itll work again? please help its killing me that i might have broken my new ipod…please comment back and help me out!!!!!
i left mine in the rain… it still worked but the backlight flicked on and then off but the ipod still worked. I put it in my oven that has pilot lights and afterwards it would not turn on at all.
lastnight i was sitting on my couch and my 3 yr old brother took my touch out of my hand and ran in the bathroom. after fishing it out of the toilet, i dried it off and it worked fine, but then the touch screen started not working. i left it on my window sill all day while i was at school and i came home and it worked, the wifi wasn’t working so i mistakenly turned it off and now it shows the boot logo for a couple secs and the screen goes white and then black, then starts again. help would be usefull, ultimate._.toa@hotmail.com
one day i wanted to give my itouch a rest so i turned it off and now it wont turn on! i tried everything and I finally took it to Irepair and they say it has water damage and my board is fried! HOW! it has never touched any liquid EVER please help. Should i take it back to apple
For all you who decided to “heat” up your itouch and dry it out that way you pretty much fried it that way cause if anybody ever read the Product information guide then you saw not heat with an external source like a furnace of hair dryer and not to subject itouch to temps above 113 F. The rice and a bag idea seems like it would work no harm would come from it try not to mess with a recently watered itouch until it is COMPLETELY dry it might cause a short circuit. Hope this helped any.
i just bought the iphone with the plan.i didnt even have it for a month.i have forgotten thati dont have the plan for damge iphone.i was told i have 30days to decide if or not to include the damage repair plan. only if i knew iphoneis sensitive compared to other phone.even if it gets wet.still works.i dont undersTAnd sooo pricy and yet dead end after wet iphone.

im another idiot who dropped his ipod in water so i need help because my indicator is half white half pink… will apple accept that?????????????????and the volume button is mixed up with the power button plz help or ill have to resort to apple and pay the cost of a new ipod :(
I dropped my iPod touch into cake batter by accident but the batter was thick and It came in contact with the speakers inside and now there ia ni soynd at all!!!is there any way possible to fix it?I’m desperate
Just a few responses to some posts that I saw.
** 1. If you have gotten your iPhone wet *DO NOT*, I repeat *DO NOT* try to turn it on, or plug it up. Let it sit for at least 2 days (see#2) and place it in a warm dry space. Do not use a blow dryer, or put in oven, or microwave. It doesn’t help to have it hotter, just needs to be warm. When the 2 days is up, check that you can see no moisture at all, and then try to turn on. If the liquid is sticky or dirty, then you might have bad contacts inside. If it doesn’t turn on at all, the battery could be fried. Easy cheap fix.
2. Yes the rice draws the moisture out of the air, but it must be a lot, and needs to be in an enclosed area, like a zip lock, or Tupperware with the device.
3. There are replacement parts available for the iPhone (Speakers, Buttons, LCD’s, and touch screens) and they are not too hard to replace. You just need some technical know how. Everything but the motherboard can be fixed for under $50 a piece. I know how to do most of the replacements, and I know where to get the parts. If anyone wants to know anything, just email me at nickle.cadmium@gmail.com
well i am stupid and i dropped my iphone in the toilet….
it worked ok and the screen was fine but the home button stopped working.
so, i took it apart and now it wont turn on.
help!!
i was pushed into a pool at a party with my first gen itouch and it wont turn on … all it did was get really hot and make a weird noise so i put in rice. is there anyway to tell if it will work again or any other things i should try? please help
So, last night I accidentally dropped my iPhone 3G in the sink after shaving. There was at least an inch or two of water still in the sink, and it was completely submersed for about 2 seconds, maybe less. I quickly grabbed it, and tried to pat it down with towels, etc, as well as attempting to suck any of the water out of the open ports. (Probably not the smartest, but I didn’t care at the time). When my phone was still on, it was working fine. Quickly, the “this accessory does not work with the iPhone” message began to appear. I checked briefly to see if my speakers and calling abilities still worked, and they did not. After switching the “vibrate switch” to on, it did not want to vibrate. When I went to go play something on the ipod app, it mysteriously did not show a volume bar. Luckily, other than the volume bar, I could not find anything wrong with the screen or the various areas of interaction. After seeing these problems, I turned off the phone for the night, and placed it in a air-sealed Tupperware container. I placed 4 “silica gel” packets inside, that I found in various bags around the house. I went to sleep for the night, and went to test it out in the morning. (about 9 hours later)
The phone works fine, volume bar magically has re-appeared, and my speakers sound as loud as ever. I just successfully sent/received text messages, and was able to place a phone call.
Maybe I just got lucky? Very lucky? Either way, the silica gel packets is a definite recommendation. Any hope you DO have of fixing your water damaged iPhone at home, is within those little packets. Hope this helps for others.
