Those happy hackers at the iPhone Dev Team are one step closer to unlocking Apple’s cellphone – and seemingly two steps back with what they’ve discovered. Turns out, not only will they have to unlock the version of OS X that the iPhone flaunts, by gaining access to the handset’s primary CPU, but there’s also a secondary chip that controls baseband memory (which is in charge of things like communication parameters).

That secondary chip, an ARM-based Infineon S-Gold2, is running the Nucleus Real-Time operating system – a customised OS conforming to a set of interface and design guidelines. Prior knowledge of those interface and guideline standards gives the iPhone Dev Team a chance to “access or disable the lock from within the system”.
Opinion varies as to how Apple and/or AT&T will respond to progress in unlocking the iPhone.
