There is a constant battle raging between Apple and the developers that design and release unlocking solutions for the iPhone. Each time Apple stops one unlock from working the devs release another. The latest unlock software called blacksn0w is set to hit on the 4th. The new unlock works on OS 3.1.2.

According to PC World, the iPhone as an eBook reader poses a threat to the Kindle. The iPhone is reportedly becoming the eBook reader of choice for many users. One out of every five new apps in the App Store in the last four months were reportedly eBooks.

Orange has revealed the pricing for the iPhone 3GS on its network. The device can be had for free with plans starting at £45 per month, which is about $74. I wonder if we will ever see free iPhones with contracts here in America.

I’d love to hear more about the cost comparison for Orange.

Lets compare what you say to what we have in the US.
The most basic “National” plan, required for the iPhone starts at $40, and gives 450 minutes. The data plan for the iphone is $30 a month. The newest iPhone (3GS) is $200 for the 16GB version.

If Orange is charging $74 for its plan, does that include internet? If it does, then they are really only paying $4 more a month than we are. Are they required to hold a one year contract, or two? If two years, the $4 a month works out to only $96. That means that Orange users are getting the phone for $104 cheaper than AT&T users in the US.

Could it be that Apple is making the same amount of money on their product to Orange users and AT&T users, but the discrepancy is that AT&T is making money on the sale of iPhones too, whereas Orange is not (or making less money on them?) Is Orange subsidizing the iphone more than AT&T? Or does the $74 NOT include a data plan? How does all of this work out?

    Fred,

Charges are – Free phone 16gb 3gs – then $70 per month for 24 months. This is free unlimited internet – 1200 minutes of calls and 500 text messages. We also don’t use any minutes if people call us so all of the 1200 minutes is used for outgoing calls.
