GPS for the iPhone via Navizon

Well, technically its not GPS as there isn’t a single GPS satellite or chipset involved. But it will use cell towers and WiFi to attempt to triangulate your position and display it on Google maps.

It comes by way of the Installer.app from AppTapp I believe. Apparently it only takes about 30 seconds to get connected. Obviously the more urban areas that have a denser population of cell towers are going to provide you with the most precise location.

The Giz guys got a point that was only a couple hundred yards off, meanwhile a commenter got a point that was 4 miles off. I am assuming that since its available through the Installer.app that it is free, which is odd considering it apparently uses a Navizon server. There are also versions for other phones and types software including Java, Windows, WM, BlackBerry, S60 (Nokia’s OS for those that don’t know) and a few more.

worked for me @ one location in heidelberg, germany, location was actually 10m next to the pin, not too bad… but i just registered, i think once it goes into lite mode it will lose a lot of that exactness… i think in lite mode accuracy is 1000m instead of 2-10m… bummer…

no palm support… and no info on how to add wifi hotspots with geo data manually… actually it would be cool if someone could make an app that let’s users ponit to their location where the’re conneted to wifi or cell tower manually and this way helping people that are not familiar with the neighborhood… i think within a few months it would catch on in the iphone/pocketPC/palm/blackberry community…
