Ummm...Many people payed the full, unsubsidized $600 to $700 price (or even more) to purchase this phone without a contract, so technically AT&T/Apple has no right to render the phones unlockable.

The Engadget article seems very unclear if it means it will prevent Jailbreaking or Unlocking. Preventing jailbreaking would be a sad loss, but I have no sympathy for those, especially in the US, who have this fervent desire to break the user agreement they signed the day they bought the phone. AT&T has every right to exact a penalty for this, and it's in Apple's best interest to protect AT&T's desires. You got a discount on the phone based on the fact that you agreed to two years worth of service. Playing the unlocking game at this point is thievery and nothing short of it.
