Today we get our first look at the “wickedly cool” “Media Monster” otherwise known as the MOTO Z8. Will it live up to the hype? We'll see.

MOTO Z8
Since it is to be a “Media Monster” it's going to need some good multimedia functions. The screen is very important, since you're going to be staring at it a lot. So they gave it a QVGA 16 million color TFT display that will play back at 30fps and is viewable in both portrait and landscape modes.

MOTO Z8

They are also focusing on content. Since they are going to want the best out-of-box experience they give you a free movie that came out 5 years ago. Ok, the Bourne Identity was actually a pretty good flick. But they give you a free 512MB memory card with the entire movie on it. You're also going to get access to BskyB which will get you access to video feed of new, sports and entertainment content.

MOTO Z8

Finally, they are trying to boost mobile gaming with the MOTO Z8. They plan on releasing “high quality” mobile games. You'll get a peek at what they are going for with the SSX3 title preloaded on the phone from EA Sports.

MOTO Z8

If you are wondering how you're going to hold all of this content, the phone is going to support up to 32GB of expandable memory. Though their press release stated that it was “Dependent on market availability” so I'm guessing that you won't be seeing that right away.

MOTO Z8

So they've put in a good screen, given you a free game and a movie and access to mobile TV. The interface has been designed to be easier to use, but we've not seen that yet. So is it a “Media Monster”? I wouldn't say “monster” per se, but it does look like it will be a pretty good media phone. “Wickedly Cool”? I definitely wouldn't go that far.

MOTO Z8

I would tell you to check out Motorola's launch site, but it doesn't look like they can handle any more people connecting to it right now. I've been trying to access it for about an hour with very little luck. But if you're interested in their other new phones, head on over to Slashgear for full coverage.

There’s nothing new or innovative about Moto Z8. I briefly glanced at their line up this morning, and feel really bad for Ed along with everyone that works there. Samsung and Nokia will eat Moto’s lunches.

If these “phones” are all they’ve got, then the mobile division is in big trouble.

Recently, in the Wall Street Journal, billionaire investor Carl Icahn published an open letter to their shareholders, that he be made a boardmember to help Motorola move in the right direction. In his opinion, the company has been stumbling quite badly under Edward Zander’s leadership.

I was going over the former Apple/Motorola iTunes phone relationship, and it seems obvious that Motorola was a horrorifyingly leakey boat leading up to the release of the ROKR. At the beginning of 2005, they had an executive waving iTunes around on a phone it wouldn’t actually be available for, causing massive confusion in the media. In the months that followed, a gajillion “rumor” launch dates were given. By September, when the ROKR was finally announced at an Apple media event, Jobs also presented the Nano. Zander was pissed that he wasn’t told, and accused Apple/Jobs of undercutting the ROKR’s launch. Personally, I think the leak to Engadget months earlier, where everyone was calling it a fugly phone was at fault for even killing the element of surprise.

Neither Samsung nor Nokia seem interested in creating high-end feature phones that work well in the U.S. When I heard about Moto’s “media monster”, I was curious. If this is all they’ve got, I’m insulted… and they’re in DEEP DOO.

Do you remember how moto was pushing the brand “motorazr” for their line of razr phones? We’ll thanks to me, they’re now calling it the “razr2″…read this and you’ll understand why.

Motorola’s claim, then, was dismissed, in no small part due to the fact that they apparently had no substance to back up their claims.

Please find attached the full text of the decision issued on February 15, 2007 by the Administrative Panel in the above-referenced case.

The Administrative Panel’s finding is as follows:

“For all the foregoing reasons, the Complaint is denied.”

Yours sincerely,

Gabriele Bahr
