We’ve touched on the custom 3rd party applications a couple of times already, but I wanted to take a minute and post our thoughts on the matter. It kind of feels like Apple gave developers the finger on this one.

Developers have really been itching for a way to make “real” applications for the iPhone. Anyone can write a piece of software that will run in a web browser. Hell, we’ve already covered applications that were being developed “for the iPhone” that were really just web-based applications. Okay, you can make them interact with other applications and features in the iPhone, but this really feels like Apple copped out. Yes, they are giving us custom applications. But they’re still holding all of the cards.
Another concern is that if these are web-based, does that mean that we’re going to have to be pulling this stuff from over the net? AT&T’s EDGE network isn’t exactly 3G, even with their “Fine edge” project that they’re promising. Lets pray that this won’t be the case.
What do you guys think, will the web-based applications be enough to appease the masses? Or will Apple need to open up the iPhone and let developers create “real” iPhone applications?

Great. Web apps. Now I have to launch Safari, open a bookmark, then wait for the internet to give me my application?
What about designing cool games that would have worked with Multi-Touch?
Disappointing. Apparently, I’m not the only one who agrees with that.
Apple stock is down by 4+ points.
I don’t care how it’s done, as long as I can do something. I doubt the whole “launch Safari, open a bookmark,” etc. etc. More than likely, it will be a real “button” to push, and the OS will tell Safari to handle it, probably without the standard URL bar that accompanies web surfing. Even if I’m wrong, I’m buying it for what it has on it, not what I can install later.
Yes, browser-based apps suck generally, but you don’t have to hook up to the Internet to run them.
I prefer, at the very least, widgets for the applications just like the ones already on the iPhone.
But for the love of God, keep the Java out!
That’s why I just bought a Treo–no worries about installing anything–install what you want, when you want it. Oh yea, one last thing: It has a touchscreen, too.
Zzzzzz…. Wake me up when there’s Skype client. Written in html and javascript LOL
No, I don’t think Apple copped out! IPhone application development announced at WWDC 2007 is based on Web 2.0 and open standards. Please review the following web page for what exactly Web 2.0 is all about –
