The lack of support for Flash on Apple devices is infamous. YouTube has now launched a new mobile site for the iPhone and iPad that is made with HTML5.

Some iPhone 4 users have been reporting significantly decreased upload speed sin some areas. AT&T has announced that a defect in its network is causing the issue and not a change in how it throttles the iPhone.

We had heard that a new firmware was coming that would address the poor signal that some users of the iPhone 4 complain of. Apple has now stated that the reception issues with the iPhone 4 are a hardware problem and won’t be fixed with software. The software will only fix the bar display to show accurately.

In an interesting twist to the current state of things iTunes app wise; are double standards now at play? Mippin have been having trouble with an Application for weeks, while their indiscretions are live through competitor.

Content was an issue for Tweetie, whereas Mippin have a similar issue, thus modifications were made to filter the “objectionable” content. Checks were implemented to rate all 50,000 feeds and stop the ones with the bad language. All well and good you would think, but no; this time Mippin was rejected because of a YouTube Video.

Through the above screenshot, the left image is the YouTube screenshot of the video which has had nearly 1/2 million views. To the right is Mippin. This video has a naughty wash-your-mouth-out-with-soap word. This video is the reason Mippin got a big ‘no’ however through Apple’s own YouTube, the video can be seen. Mippin states in a recent blog that they feel “persecuted by Apple of this situation.” Put simply, the reason Mippin were rejected, no filter exists for YouTube and the video (and their application as a whole) is approved and available. Are Apple playing favorites? What is the real reason Apple keep rejecting Mippin (their app is cool)? Is Rachel Ray really that smokin?

For a moment, two iPhone prototypes were for sale on eBay. There was also a supporting YouTube Video, although before you try to find them; they have both been pulled.

Both the auction and YouTube video of the working prototype have been pulled at Apple‘s request. For eBay, the seller told iLounge that “as many people predicted would happen, Apple has contacted eBay to close the listing.” YouTube states that “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Apple, Inc.” Neither of the iPhones had the word “iPhone” written on them. From what was available through photos, each unit was manufactured in China in late 2006. (The iPhone was not officially announced until January 2007.) The working unit runs iPhone OS 03.06.01_G while the launch version which ran version 03.11.02_G.

This seems all too similar to former Apple employee, Mike Evangelist for listing a pre-release first-generation iPod on eBay. This one pulled at the beginning of this year. The iPod was fully functional, the pre-production unit can be synced with the current version of iTunes, but required a special utility for restoring the software. The hardware changes made before the official release preclude this unit from being updated/restored using the standard mechanism. I thought these toys went into Museums? And thinking of eBay, I need a new coffee table, thanks for the reminder iLounge!

Playback of embedded videos in mobile Safari has been a long-demanded feature, and while Apple’s moves toward that as spotted in the latest firmware beta might be little more than a gesture – not full Flash compatibility, just avoiding having to leave Safari and view media in the standalone YouTube app – it’s a start at least. iPhone Atlas have shown this screenshot of a handset running the new firmware, with a YouTube video waiting to be started:

As with the existing app, only YouTube content is supported and only if it’s been encoded in the H.264 format. The hope now is that Apple – or third-party developers, though the terms of the SDK agreement currently don’t allow direct interaction with mobile Safari – will bring out a range of plugins that will enable more internet functionality. Considering all the publicity Apple have courted recently over the popularity of the iPhone for getting online when mobile, it would seem a strange decision not to further enhance the experience.

In terms of Bluetooth, A2DP has been included in the code as well as “HeadphonesBT” that indicates wireless stereo capabilities, long requested for the handset. Bluetooth remote control is also mentioned. The new beta also references “RoleGPS”, which many have assumed will mean either in-built navigation capabilities or at least compatibility with an external GPS device (likely connected via Bluetooth).

The library also includes a mention of “Printers”, a new addition, while reference to Nike+ sports monitoring equipment have been deleted. The suspected integration of the currently standalone YouTube app into mobile Safari is also present, via a “YouTubePlugIn.webplugin” component, and “Google411″ – the search company’s directory enquiry service – is now associated with Google Maps on the iPhone.

Finally, there are suspicions that Apple will require official activation of an iPhone via iTunes before Firmware 2.0 is permitted to install.

At present, video embedded into webpages won’t display in the iPhone’s browser, and only YouTube content is visible in a separate program. It’s unclear right now whether this new plugin will simply embed the separate YouTube app into the webpage, or is a sign of more advanced Flash development on Apple’s part.

In response, Adobe examined the iPhone SDK to see whether they could code a unique version of their embedded Flash viewer for the handset; however, Apple’s third-party software rules scuppered any chance of that, as they do not allow for Safari plugins, only standalone apps.

As it stands, then, the only possibility for an official Adobe Flash solution with the current SDK is if Apple gives them special treatment and permits a version of their software to work with Mobile Safari. This new Firmware 2.0 plugin could be a sign of that, but it’s simply too early to say.

Currently the iPhone will only play YouTube videos through the dedicated application Apple provide rather than via the YouTube site in mobileSafari; furthermore, only videos re-processed by YouTube using the H.264 codec can be viewed. This move by Adobe to support and promote standards already adopted by Apple – both in the iPhone and the AppleTV streamer – may be the first step to a full Flash player on the cellphone itself.

And when you find a video you want to send your friends, iPhone can even create an email with the link in it for you.

I know there are folks out there who would rather see Apple put their efforts towards creating other useful apps. It is what it is, so what I’m interested in knowing is, are you thrilled about YouTube available as a native application on the iPhone? I was close when I predicted Apple would announce YouTube for iPhone at WWDC. The announcement just came a week or so later than expected.

[poll=32]

The iPhone will go on sale on June 29th at 6PM local time. The 8GB version cost $599, while the 4GB is $499 (with a 2-year contract with AT&T).

Press Release from Apple:

YouTube Live on Apple TV Today; Coming to iPhone on June 29

Best YouTube Experience on a Mobile Device

CUPERTINO, Calif., June 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple(R) today announced that iPhone(TM) users will be able to enjoy YouTube’s originally-created content on their iPhones when they begin shipping on June 29. A new Apple-designed application on iPhone will wirelessly stream YouTube’s content to iPhone over Wi-Fi or EDGE networks and play it on iPhone’s stunning 3.5 inch display.

In addition, Apple announced that YouTube is now live on Apple TV(TM). Users can download the free software update using Apple TV’s built-in software update feature, and then easily navigate through YouTube’s familiar video browsing categories or search for specific videos. YouTube members can also log-in to their YouTube accounts on Apple TV to view and save their favorite videos.

“iPhone delivers the best YouTube mobile experience by far,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Now users can enjoy YouTube wherever they are-on their iPhone, on their Mac or on a widescreen TV in their living room with Apple TV.”

To achieve higher video quality and longer battery life on mobile devices, YouTube has begun encoding their videos in the advanced H.264 format, and iPhone will be the first mobile device to use the H.264-encoded videos. Over 10,000 videos will be available on June 29, and YouTube will be adding more each week until their full catalog of videos is available in the H.264 format this fall.

The combination of H.264-encoded videos plus iPhone’s built-in Wi-Fi networking, stunning 3.5 inch display, and custom YouTube application with its multi-touch user interface results in the best YouTube experience on any mobile device.

Pricing & Availability
iPhone will include the built-in Apple-designed YouTube application when it is available in the US on June 29, 2007 in a 4GB model for $499 (US) and an 8GB model for $599 (US). iPhone will be sold in the US through Apple’s retail and online stores, and through AT&T’s retail stores.

Apple TV users can download the free software update using Apple TV’s built-in software update feature.

iPhone users who enjoy viral videos and watching people attempt to perform Jackass-style stunts will be pleased to know that amongst the goodies on their new cellphone will be a YouTube viewer application. Rather than being available through the Safari browser, there’ll be a specific, Apple-designed program that can stream the Flash video either over the EDGE or WiFi networks.

YouTube is moving to encoding using the H.264 standard, which offers far better compression of video while still retaining higher quality than the current H.264 video. That means faster downloads and, of particular interest if you’re paying for the cellular data, less to transfer. It should also preserve some battery life.

Further screenshots indicate how the iPhone manages bookmarked video clips, complete with ratings, and a more detailed information page for specific clips that has greater description and a “related videos” option. Both pages have easy “share” buttons to allow the clip to be forwarded on to a friend.

The iPhone will be the first mobile device to support H.264, and YouTube are promising over 10,000 videos in the format on launch day with the rest of the back-catalogue being converted by the Fall.

“iPhone delivers the best YouTube mobile experience by far,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Now users can enjoy YouTube wherever they are-on their iPhone, on their Mac or on a widescreen TV in their living room with Apple TV.”

One big surprised announcement at WWDC on June 11th is the offering of YouTube on the iPhone. At least that’s what Gizmodo seem to think. Why? YouTube has been going nuts converting all their videos to the H.264 codec. Guess what? The iPhone and iPods supports H.264.

Steve Jobs announced YouTube support for AppleTV at D conference, that iPhones will get it as well. Another source corroborates this theory.

Some may say EDGE will make it suck for watching YouTube videos. I say otherwise, because that’s what WiFi is for. Just look at the 3G-less N95, it didn’t stop Nokia from supporting YoutTube. Sure, it would be nice to have HSDPA, but for now, I’ll “take it as is” versus waiting another six months or a year just to have 3G on the iPhone.
