He’s reported as not loving the iPhone, considering his first and foremost concern was the “virtual keyboard” being difficult to use. Believe it or not, the rumor on the street says otherwise. Seems like Mossberg is apparently delighted with the iPhone and loves every waking moment he spends using it.

Furthermore, he is very pleased with the clarity, sharpness and resolution of the iPhone’s 3.5-inch glass-topped multi-touch screen. LoopRumor’s source went on to claim that Mossberg is impressed with the screen’s responsiveness to the finger input and he plans on using the iPhone as his primary phone from now on.

We’ll have to wait for Mossberg’s official review, scheduled to be published at launch on June 29th, to determine the accuracy of this report.

Thanks to the leaked “iPhone Sales Training Workbook” for AT&T Wireless employees leaked last week as well as Apple CEO Steve Jobs WWDC keynote, you can take the following to the bank:

The iPhone will have support for IMAP, POP3, and Yahoo Push mail. It will also automatically recognize and detect phone numbers in email messages, and gives the option for a one-click access to dialing them. The iPhone does not support Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), so you will not be able to attach pictures or videos to text messages. It will not let you “chat” with friends directly via instant messaging (IM).

Videos will pause automatically when a call comes in, and then resumes when the call ends.

The iPhone does not have Global Positioning System (GPS).

There is no such thing as an iPhone SDK. Third-party applications will be allowed only as web-based applications loaded the Internet via the iPhone’s Safari web browser.

You must either setup or have an existing iTunes account in order to use the iPhone, even if you do not intend to make purchases. This is an additional requirement on top of the 2-year service agreement with AT&T.

Synchronization is automatic when the iPhone is plugged into a Mac or PC for email, contacts, calendar, and photos.

Please add to the conversation in the comment section with other facts you know about the iPhone that wasn’t listed here.

Going to expos and events are always exciting for the potential new news, but as well as that there’s the possibility that you might bump into someone in the industry who you particularly admire. There’s an old saying that you should never meet your idols since they’ll only ever disappoint you; right now that’s ringing more than a little true for me.

[poll=29]

The idol, as I’m sure he is for many people, is Steve Jobs. Man, I’ve looked up to him for years. Hero-worship gets a bad press, but if it makes me an Apple fanboy then I guess I’m a fanboy. As you can tell from the coverage here on MYiPhone, the majority of which has been glowingly positive of Apple’s first solo cellphone attempt, we’re big believers in the device and the company ethos. So when I got to meet Steve at D5 the other day, I was like a kid on Christmas morning again (only with less egg-nog). I almost expected an Apple-flavored electric shock when we shook hands; what I didn’t expect was to get slapped with a legal threat.

Turns out, Steve isn’t such a great fan of MYiPhone as we are about the phone itself. His comment to me about the site was “I recommend you changing the name, we have a team of lawyers to go after that kind of stuff.” Well, you could’ve knocked me over with a Mac mini. He mentioned that we should change it to anything other than iPhone in the name. He suggested something like mydreamphone.

Leaving aside the frustration of my first meet’n'greet with Jobs being marred, leaving aside how seriously I should take what could’ve been a throwaway or jovial comment, it raises some serious questions about Apple and their fluctuating stance on fan-sites. If, you see, they decide to take us down – and I’ve no doubt that Steve’s legal “team” err on the rabid side of business – what does that mean for the rest of the blog community?

Apple has some pretty impressive previous form when it comes to this sort of thing. They didn’t take kindly to Clint Curtis’ “iPod Monday” and cited trademark misuse in their cease & desist letter; meanwhile iLounge were forced to change their name from “iPod Lounge” after Apple’s legal raptors decided they weren’t keen on it. There have also been plenty of cases where third-party accessories have had to withdraw or rebrand after Apple got sour over their use of the iPod trademark.

Thinking about it, though, the situation is of course slightly different with the iPhone. Here, Apple don’t actually own the trademark – Cisco does. Our fruity Cupertino friends are just doing the business version of borrowing it. How their history of fiercely defending names and trademarks will fit into this new arrangement isn’t certain, and that’s something that will be watched very closely both by blogs like MYiPhone and the accessory makers who know full well that Apple add-ons are very big business.

Still, one moment of angst hasn’t ruined the WSJ: D5 All Things Digital experience for me. It was awesome to hear Steve speak for such a length of time without a particular product to announce, and we got some headline grabbing news like YouTube on the Apple TV, the seemless wireless-switching of the iPhone and of course the news that it’ll be opened up to third-party apps at some point later this year. Maybe my hero-worship got a little bruised, but if you’re on the front line, like MYiPhone is, then you’ve got to expect some flak. We’ll just keep bringing you the best in iPhone news.

Vincent is pretty excited, he’s covering the main event at D5 where Gates and Jobs take the stage with Walt Mossberg. I think it will be a great thing to watch. Like them or not, they’re two of the biggest players in the tech world right now. Stay tuned, he’ll be feeding us live coverage from the event.

7:21pm Showing old videos…IBM, Microsoft, Apple…nothing too exciting yet.

7:25 “2007 Together Here”

It’s actually Walk, Kara, Steve, and Gates from left to right.

Walt introducing some folks in the audience

Kara jumps in and asks whats up with the cat fight and who’s done what for the computing industry? Jobs first to answer by saying Bill built the first software for the industry – focusing on the software before anyone else had a clue. Building a company is hard, getting the right talent and keeping them. Bill has been staying with it for all these years.

Bill clarify he’s not fake “Steve Jobs” all laughed…

Walt…Microsoft software in the first Apple II computer? Walt wants Bill to talk about it. Something about floating point Bill worked with Woz…Steve jumps in and interrupts Bill.

Jobs talks about how perfect Woz’s coding is except for fixed point – flawed. “We” is Steve begging Woz to making it floating point. Steve never understood why.

Microsoft had the solution for $31,000 on cassette tape. Bill thought the working relationship was fun. Kara commented “maybe later when it wasn’t fun.”

Walt remembers paying a bundle for a 128k computer at the time.

Kara wants to know what the future of Apple and MS…

Bill said he’s not happy with Apple not supporting higher platform something (clarify later)

Bill thinks that Apple didnt advance as fast in the GUI area…

Jobs’ job was to get the ship (Apple) pointed inthe right direct…everyone laughed (something funny here)

Walt commented that Windows 95 was a huge leap. Gates agree.

Walt talks to Jobs about coming back to Apple something about being in a battle between Apple and MS.

Jobs agree Apple was in trouble, and if it’s a zero sum game, Apple would lose. That’s the mentality. Too many people at Apple playing the system that in order for Apple to win, MS had to lose. APPLE NEED TO REMEMBER WHO APPLE WAS…he wanted to break that Paradign. Jobs called Bill up and patched things up when he returned to Apple. (how big of him!)

Kara likes PC guys better than the Apple guy. Steve said the purpose of the apple vs pc is to get those guy to like each other. Bill says PC guys mother loves him!

(everyone laughed)

Walt wants to know how often is Apple on MS’ radar? Jobs commented all Zune owners are Apple customers…all laughed

Jobs…big secret about Apple is that it’s a software company with a beautiful box around it ie. ipod, mac, and maybe iphone?

Walt ask if there were any regrets that Jobs did or didn’t do that could have increase market share for Apple?

Jobs things there could be a number of things, but it doesnt matter. Looking forward is what counts. What happens tomorrow counts! Invent tomorrow rather than happened yesterday.

Kara wants to know what’s going on today and in today’s landscape. Jobs thinks it’s superhealthy, young folks building next generation companies. Lots of activities. Bill agrees – healthy. Bill thinks looking back, this is a big period for invention.

Steve loves google maps, called up google to get something going for the iPhone. Apple wrote api apps resulting in a kick ass client that’s better than any other phone on the market.

Jobs thinks the marriage between services and a powerful devices is more important than just a device with a browser. ie. google maps.

Walt doesnt think this magical device perhaps a tablet hasnt stormed the market yet.

Kara wants to know what would each of them carry in 5-years as a single device?

Steve carries an iphone now and a mbp, an iphone right here right now, what does bill have?

In 5-years bill thinks it’s not just one device, he believes in tablet form factor with rich powerful apps, and then a device that fits in the pocket for navigation, phone, etc. At home there would be gaming, network, etc. Every horizontal surface would have a projector. Walt asks if he can have a room that doesn’t have a projector?

Jobs thinks the PC has been very resilient. Personal computer in general. It plateau then along came the Internet. Multimedia center took over, reborned as the digital hub of your life. He thinks something is starting again…basically same shit different time period as a general device that never dies? Then there’s an explosion in the post-pc, ie. iPod as one of them. Walt comments Steve might get in trouble calling it post-pc (steve is confused as to why)…sample of a post-pc, iPod, phone etc. To steve everything is computer in a different form factor, who cares what’s inside.

Walt want to know what’s a core phone functionality in 5-years? Bill attempts to answer by saying it’s not going to do everything such as editing your homework. Perhaps a scrollable screen may be the right solution. For steve, he doesnt, because it depends on people/consumers. They determine what’s popular. The phone is primarily a communication device with some entertainment in it.

Steve is working on something he cant talk about…”isnt it funny when a ship leaks from the top”

new services interest steve, a lot of them having to do with navigating through life more efficiently. solving people daily problems.

Walt touch on .mac as not being more developed and steve agrees; more is coming he commented.

Entertainment deliver, Kara wants to know what’s up? Bill thinks the big milestone in the delivery is the Internet and the community within it.

(yawn)

Walt change topics to user interfaces on OS. Wans to know if there will be a big change in the UI over the next few years. Bill cited 3D interface, which didn’t live up to the hype yet. Maybe someday when technology is ready used in organizing things like visiting an online book store. Jobs didn’t answer.

Walt changed topic to “multi-touch” will this make it’s way into mainstream to laptops or just on specialized devices? Blah blah blah, Steve is so quiet.

Kara turns to Steve. Steve is speechless. He question how much of the revolutionary discoveries will be done on a pc? In some case augment what’s there and others it will be post-pc.

Kara wants to know the biggest misunderstanding between each other’s relationship??????????

Steve said they’ve kept their marriage a secret for a long time! Bill stars into space blanked.

Steve comments about love to being in the room hence he’s not the oldest guys…unlike his other environment.

Jobs

To quote the beatles, You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead, and that’s definitely true here.

Standing ovation for Jobs. Nice grab and use of the Beatles quote.

Opens for questions…we’ll end here too.

Palm just wrapped up their webcast where they talked about their new Foleo. It looks like a laptop, but it’s more of a mobile email machine. I can honestly say after watching this, I want one.

Jeff Hawkins described a lot of the features about the Foleo, the biggest being a full standard keyboard and the instant-on feature. The Foleo only has two states: off, and on. You never have to wait to turn it on. The applications are always ready, everything is instant.

By now you’re thinking that this is cool and all, but what do you care, you came here to read about iPhone news. While talking about the different phones that the Foleo will work with, he said that it will work out of the box with all of the Treo line, and most Windows Mobile phones. He then mentioned that if Apple opens up their code to allow 3rd party applications, then they can make it work with the iPhone as well.

Now that Steve Jobs has said that they will in fact open up for 3rd party applications we will almost definitely be seeing these two working together. This device could really revolutionize the mobile computing industry, and what better phone for it to work with than the iPhone?

NEWS FLASH!!

Straight from the the BIG man Steve Jobs himself.

Question: We’d love to write apps. Will it open up?

Steve Jobs: This is a very important tradeoff between security and openness. We want both. We’ve got good ideas, and sometime later this year, we can open it up to 3rd party apps, and keep security.

So what are analysts going to call the iPhone now?!

WM You have a phone?

SJ Yes (whips it out) best ipod we’ve ever made. Best phone we’ve ever made!

WM Coming out end of june, last day?

SJ Uh yeah. I’ll send you one. (giggles)

12:26 WM Selling it through the stores and cingular?
SJ Yes, cingular, which is the new AT&T
WM Just like the old AT&T. You’re a lot nicer to the phone companies now.
SJ Well, yes, We haven’t sold one yet but they broke a lot of rules. And we did the same. We wouldn’t show it to them. And we took a gamble on each other. I will never forget that.

12:27 WM Why did this work? They wanted your brand to go along with their new brand?

SJ So far, music not doing well on phones. On phones, you have 3g, but not good way to use. You get the baby internet and the mini internet, but nothing real. We’re doing that in an entirely new way. We’ll see.

12:28 WM Any feature in the iPhone you’d like to announce that you haven’t yet shared?

SJ Uh, no.

WM Is the iphone a phone with an ipod inside or is it the ipod wiht a phone inside

SJ it’s 3 things. It’s the best ipod, a remarkable phone, and the internet in your pocket.

12:34 WM how much back in forth is there inside, developing. I assume its like the UN where you have a veto.

SJ It’s not like that. If you want to keep talented people you can’t tell them what to do all the time…much.

WM How much debate about physical keyboard?

SJ None.

WM Really? In ALL of cupertino.

SJ. Yep

SJ I’ll bet you dinner, after a few days, after you get one, you’ll think its great.
Once you learn to trust it, you fly. And the screen UI can change as you come up with new ideas.

SJ Cingular said we need this button. They hadn’t seen it yet. Oh, I said that we’ll do that after we ship. They said, huh?

SJ Why is apple popular? Because the preeminent japanese gadget companies couldn’t do software.

The iphone is software wrapped in a beautiful package. And the companies couldn’t make that leap. And that’s why Apple has that success with the ipod.

If you look at hardware manufacturers for handsets, they haven’t been able to make the leap.

The usual suspects will try to copy the hardware. But the software is hard to do; 5 years ahead of anything we’ve seen. We started with an OS we’ve been working on for well over a decade and a browser, safari, which is regarded as many as the best.

12.41 WM But it doesn’t have the entire OS X software inside, or safari

SJ Yes it does. A lot of it is data. Desktop patterns, audio files. It has real desktop email, safari, OS X. And we took all that, and put a new UI on it. It’s an amazing amount of software.

WM On the technical side, could an OS X app run on the iPhone?

SJ We don’t think that’s a good idea. The phone has its own UI.
