I mentioned yesterday that there were rumors flying that AT&T could be ready to allow VoIP over its 3G network with apps like Google Voice and Skype. Previously VoIP apps on the iPhone were only working over Wi-Fi connections. AT&T officially informed Apple and the FCC yesterday that it would allow 3G VoIP service.

“iPhone is an innovative device that dramatically changed the game in wireless when it was introduced just two years ago,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets. “Today’s decision was made after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer.”

The scary part to me is the thought of the 3G coverage AT&T offers getting worse by an increased amount of VoIP traffic. Perhaps that won’t be an issue though; most people don’t use VoIP at all.

If you are an iPhone user who makes lots of VoIP calls using the Truphone app, you may want to reconsider updating your iPhone to OS 3.1. The company behind the Truphone app has issued a statement saying the current version is not compatible with the new OS update.

Truphone is a VoIP app that routes calls across the Internet to save users money. Like Skype, calls to other Truphone users are free and calls to other users around the world are available for a low price.

The app is available for free on the App Store for the iPhone and the iPod touch. Truphone issued a statement saying, “We are aware of this issue and indeed already have a solution (Truphone 3.03), with Apple for approval. We had hoped that our new version would be approved and available at the same time as the Apple 3.1 firmware. We are, of course, working with Apple to ensure a speedy release of this update.”

Vopium today announced its latest application to the iPhone, enabling users to make free and cheap international calls. Powered by mobile VoIP and Wi-Fi technology, Vopium is now available in Apple’s App Store.

Once you downloaded application and registered, you will receive 30 minutes of free calls and 30 text messages (SMS). According to Tanveer Sharif, Vopium’s CEO, at least 500 devices already supported this application.

Once the Vopium application is downloaded to the iPhone, it is tightly integrated with the user’s address book. When an international number is dialed, the call is made using the cheapest method available while preserving the highest call quality. When using Wi-Fi, Vopium iPhone users can call other Vopium Wi-Fi users for free, regardless of the brand/model of their device.

What won’t be possible is VoIP over 3G. According to Skype’s chief operating officer, Scott Durchslag, this is a limitation of Apple’s App Store terms of service. Neither AT&T nor Apple answered a request for a comment on the Skype app.

iPod touch owners will also be able to download and use the software, though they’ll need to buy a microphone accessory since the PMP doesn’t have one integrated. After iPhone OS 3.0 is released, however, 2nd-gen iPod touch users should be able to use the PMP’s newly-unlocked Bluetooth with hands-free headsets.

iCall is a useful application which will allow you to instantly switch between VoIP and GSM calls. This means you can sit at home and use your local Wi-Fi network to make calls without using up valuable minutes.

No, the iPhone won’t be the first phone to take advantage of this sort of feature, but you can bet that it will be one of the more useful apps. This is said to already have passed the Apple inspection, and should hopefully appear on the App Store sometime after launch.

VoIP company fring has announced what it’s calling the world’s first publicly available mobile VoIP app for the iPhone, putting the beta version out for download. That means they’ve beaten rival Jajah – who recently announced their intention to release an iPhone VoIP client over the Summer – although Jajah are using the official SDK to develop their software whereas fring currently requires a Jailbroken or otherwise hacked “open” handset. The client uses WiFi for VoIP calls, rather than the EDGE data connection, in response to AT&T’s classification of VoIP as a “conference call service” contrary to their contract.

Developed in conjunction with the Holon Institute of Technology academic research labs in Israel, calls between fring clients (which are already available for handsets running Symbian 8 or 9, Windows Mobile 5 or 6, or UIQ) are free while those to landlines and mobiles are apparently priced competitively compared to AT&T’s own tariffs. Instant Messaging has also been included, and the fring client is compatible with Skype, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter, AIM and Yahoo! contacts. Obviously since this is still a R&D app there could be some bugs present, so fring are looking for feedback and suggestions.

You can install the fring VoIP client through Installer on your iPhone. Add http://fring.com/iphone.xml as a source and the app should show up among the options. As ever, if you do try it out, let us know how you get on on in the comments!

Back in 2007 there was a lot of talk about VoIP company Jajah and their attempts to bring a client to the iPhone; in the end, AT&T’s definition of “conference call services” scuppered those plans and Jajah instead launched an iPhone-formated web interface for their ring-back service. With the arrival of the official Apple SDK, however, Jajah are now apparently working on a native VoIP client for the iPhone, thanks to Cupertino’s blessing that software which routes voice calls over the internet will be permitted on the handset as long as it uses WiFi, not EDGE, for their connection.

Rather cleverly, the Jajah client will use both VoIP and the existing call-back system to get around that Apple WiFi restriction. Calls placed when in connected via WiFi (such as in the home, office, or when using a hotspot somewhere) will be routed over the internet; those initiated when in a low-bandwidth situation (e.g. when only EDGE is available, or when the WiFi connection is too slow for satisfactory VoIP use) will default to the Jajah call-back system.

The app is expected sometime during the Summer, around the release of iPhone Firmware 2.0.

A glimmer of hope for those iPhone owners who want a SIP-compatible VoIP client for their cellphones, as a collaboration between iPod Touch fan-site Touchmods.net and French ADSL ISP Free.fr results in a software client that allows their subscribers to make free phonecalls via their Apple device. Called Siphon, the app is currently locked to the Free.fr network (the ISP ‘paid’ Touchmods to develop the software by donating an iPhone to them) but apparently a commercial release that will operate with multiple SIP providers is set to launch at an unspecified point in the future.

The announcement has prompted controversy over at Touchmods.net, however, with some readers criticising the team for a) seemingly prioritising the iPhone with their software release, and b) locking it to Free.fr despite a number of financial donations from the fan community who have been interested in a VoIP program for the iPod Touch. Touchmods are set to release an ‘open’ version in the near future, though they have warned that this will be “time-limited”.

Over at Apple-Touch.com, our iPod Touch obsessed sister-site, we’ve been gleefully watching the work of some VoIP-loving hackers as they not only developed a SIP-compatible app for the PMP but a plug-in microphone attachment to go with it. Now they’re turning their attentions to the iPhone, which has long been pretty much at the mercy of whichever carrier has exclusivity in your country. To try to accelerate the porting process they’ve thrown open their code cupboard and invited hackers, developers and tinkerers alike to experiment with the same software that enabled low-level recording on the iPod Touch, which turned out to be the lynch-pin of the VoIP application.

Can’t code? Don’t have time, or an iPhone? They’re also open to donations so that they can buy the developers iPhones of their own to develop on. And a few dollars sent their way now could save you a whole lot of money in the future, if it speeds up the release of an iPhone VoIP client and lets you make cheap or free calls instead of paying your carrier.

You can follow our coverage of the iPod Touch VoIP development here.
