I mentioned yesterday that there were rumors flying that AT&T could be ready to allow VoIP over its 3G network with apps like Google Voice and Skype. Previously VoIP apps on the iPhone were only working over Wi-Fi connections. AT&T officially informed Apple and the FCC yesterday that it would allow 3G VoIP service.

If you are an iPhone user who makes lots of VoIP calls using the Truphone app, you may want to reconsider updating your iPhone to OS 3.1. The company behind the Truphone app has issued a statement saying the current version is not compatible with the new OS update.

A new version of fring is now available on the App Store, adding some functionality for "fringsters" to use this service on the original iPhone, iPhone 3G or iPod Touch. Using fring, you can interact with friends on all your favorite social networks including Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, SIP, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM.

After last week's rumors, Skype's iPhone client has been confirmed. The VoIP software, which will be released on Tuesday March 31st, will be a free download and allow users to make free Skype-to-Skype calls over WiFi networks. Alternatively, calls to landlines will cost 2.1 cents per minute.

Truphone has added Skype for iPhone and iPod Touch, allowing users to make calls and instant message other Skype users. This new features go live on next Monday, January 12.
