Through the release of Apple‘s iPhone 3.0 beta firmware, a fine tooth comb has been going over the configuration files looking for evidence of future capabilities. Main thing being the option to be able to do more with video.

The image (above) demonstrates the main screen for ‘video recording’ in future iPhones. The main difference for the screen is the on the toggle toward the bottom right that toggles between still camera photography and video recording. The option was only presented when the configuration files were modified telling the firmware that a Video Camera was present will this interface appear.

While going through the configuration files, other interesting capabilities found include “auto-focus camera”, “magnetometer” (digital compass) and “Voice Control”. The final version of iPhone 3.0 is expected this summer. With this, a new and updated version of the iPhone may be coming at that time as well.

We recently had the chance to try out Say Who by Excuse Me Services Inc. Say Who is a free voice dialing application that allows you to quickly and accurately dial names or numbers without even looking at your iPhone.

Just launch the application and hold the button as you either speak a contact’s name, or speak the number you wish to dial. Depending on whether or not you have auto-dial on or off, the application will automatically dial the number after a few seconds. After displaying the number that Say Who believes you are attempting to call it gives you two or three other options in case it heard you wrong.

We tested this application in the field to see how it would perform in day-to-day life. No matter how much background noise there was, Say Who almost always accurately heard our voice commands. This voice dialer even resumes after the current call ends. Say Who is perfect for use while driving. We recommend this application over any played voice dialing application.

Makayama is offering their Voice Dial application at a discount for a limited time. Voice Dial offers speech recognition for the iPhone like it has never been done before.

Dial numbers while driving, without even looking at the screen. Voice Dial allows you to dial even faster and easier than using the keyboard. The applications works with all languages, it stores your speech samples using modern software and links them to contacts. This is one outstanding application; it gives the iPhone features that it never had before.

We can all expect another feature to hit the iPhone 3G soon–speech recognition.

Now as exciting as that sounds, don’t get too excited yet. This is not speech recognition in the normal sense of the term. No, you can’t say “Mom” and the iPhone will automatically dial your mother’s number. Not going to happen. And the reason why is AT&T is developing the feature to run as a web feature. So when you speak, the data is sent to a remote server, then comes back to perform an action on your handset.

The service, called Speech Mashups, is web-based, so iPhone first gen users will probably be out of luck if stuck with using the EDGE network.

And even though voice dialing won’t work with this brand of speech recognition, it will work for a few other nifty things. There’s a video online showing a man dictating a city and type of business in YellowPages and how Speech Mashups does all of the footwork for you. Pretty cool, but voice dialing would be even nicer!
