With many commercial flights now offering WiFi while in the air, you may have wondered if FaceTime will work in flight. The answer is yes, you can make video calls using FaceTime while on a commercial flight.

The iPhone 4 unlock has gone official. The unlock comes from PlanetBeing and MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team.

Thanks to an unaddressed security flaw, the iPhone Dev Team have announced that they will soon update their ultrasn0w unlocking tool to work on the iPhone 3GS. The exploit, known as 24Kpwn, was first discovered in the iPod touch 2G, and used in the redsn0w tool to jailbreak that PMP.

Now, the Dev Team can use the same sort of technique as used in redsn0w to update ultrasn0w for Apple’s latest smartphone. The team believe that the iPhone 3GS’ bootrom was finalized in roughly August 2008, so the emergence of 24Kpwn earlier in 2009 did not affect it.

The Team are now working on integrating the new technique into ultrasn0w, which they’ve warned will “take some time”. Once that’s done, however, it will be possible to both jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.

Following rumors of the iPhone Nano the case manufacturer XSKN, Vaja has added an “iPhone Nano” listing to their website. Many case manufacturers have started to list and sell cases for the rumored iPhone Nano. Analysts also seem to believe that Apple will release a cheaper iPhone in the first quarter of 2009. Softbank has also released a voice translation tool for iPhone. The application can translate up to 1,500 spoken phrases mostly centered on travel/tourist situations and basic communication.

Mat Brady has come up with an iPhone idea that has 60GB of internal memory, slide-out keyboard, true 16:9 screen ratio with 640x 360 resolution. This concept design is being called the “iPhone ELITE.” We have seen a few iPhone camera lenses out there, but they all require bulky cases and never seem to work very well. USB Fever has come up with a magnetic set of lenses that can be attached without the air of a case.

Kraft Foods has released the iFood Assistant iPhone application. This app provides users with 7,000 recipes, each with its own video demonstration. iFood Assistant also gives users an editable shopping list for gathering ingredients from the grocery store. Spatial View has finally released their Wazabee 3DeeShell for the iPhone 3G. This “shell” has a lens that claims to allow users to see the screen in a unique 3D view. Man there has been more than enough third party keyboards out there for the iPhone. This latest one we have stumbled upon folds in half and is packed with features.

The 2008 Best App Ever Awards have come around and we urge you to take the time to go over and vote for your favorite application. There are 34 categories that the applications are voted on ranging from the eponymous “Best App Ever” all the way down to “Best Free or Ad Supported Game.” The PSP-like iControlPad for gaming on the iPhone has finally made its way to production. Now we will soon be able to play games with physical buttons.

As promised the iPhone Dev Team has released their iPhone 3G unlocking tool entitled “Yellowsn0w.” This unlock ban be downloaded via Cydia on unlocked iPhones. A pink iPhone 3G hit Ebay this week sparking all sorts of rumors. It was not long after it popped up that we found out that this is only a pink case that looks surprisingly like the phone itself.

iPhone owners in colder climates have always wanted to be able to use the iPhone with gloves to avoid freezing their fingers off. Apple has filed a patent on gloves that contain a special tip that can mimic the electrical conductivity of skin to trigger a response.

The team has set the release date of their free unlocking tool for New Year’s Eve 2008 (so you just have to wait 9 more days to try it yourself ). As they warned before, the unlock is only for the iPhone 3G with a baseband of 2.11.07.

The iPhone Dev Team has been hard at work since the iPhone 3G was released back in June. They now have the most exciting news to report so far, you guessed it an unlock for the iPhone 3G. Just how long will we have to wait before seeing this unlock for a public release?

They have set the release date of their free unlocking tool for New Year’s Eve 2008. They have codenamed the unlock “yellowsn0w.” They are packaging the unlock method into a user-friendly applications much like the QuickPwn that everyone will be able to use. As they warned before, the unlock is only for the iPhone 3G with a baseband of 2.11.07. To figure out which baseband you have, simply go to Settings-> General-> About-> Modem Firmware.

The unlock can only be applied to jailbroken iPhone 3G handsets via Cydia. Those of you who have update their Mac to OS X 10.5.6 will have to find an alternate method as this version disables DFU mode, a vital step in the jailbreaking process. The iPhone Dev Team believes the issue with DFU mode to be triggered by a kernel bug rather than countermeasures made by Apple. There is a way to fix this issue for those of you who are brave enough to attempt it.

Other than your usual SIM card unlock the only place to get an officially unlocked iPhone is through Hong Kong and parts of Europe. Unfortunately for those who spent untold amounts of money to get an unlocked iPhone 3G, your efforts may all go to waste. The new iPhone firmware 2.2 is reportedly re-locking those unlocked iPhones.

Users in the Apple support forums are saying that if you purchase a legally unlocked iPhone and then updated it in another country the device may become locked. “I bought my iPhone 3G legally unlocked from HK, and I just upgraded to iPhone 2.2, but it seems my phone is locked now. On the phone it says emergency calls only and iTunes is saying not supported SIM.”

If you have an unlocked iPhone and have not yet upgraded to the iPhone firmware 2.2 we suggest holding off just in case this ends up being true. You don’t want all that hard earned cash going for nothing. If you simply can’t wait for the update, try getting your hands on the update from the country your iPhone came from.

The iPhone 3G is now available for sale in Hong Kong. Funnily enough, there wasn’t any fanfare, but one interesting thing is that the phone will be unlocked.

The unlocked prices are, as you might have expected, rather high with the 8GB iPhone 3G selling for $5,400 HK, which is about $692 and the 16GB costs $6,200 HK, which is about $794. Users can activate their phones with any wireless carrier and Apple is allowing it so long as a SIM card is installed before you try to sync it with iTunes 8.

Interesting stuff, really. And to think just today China Mobile decided to sell an iPhone 3G without, well 3G, or even WiFi because China would prefer a local 3G protocol like the TD-SCDMA instead of HSPA.

The site also shows Google Maps being accessed over WiFi. According to our tipster, the process is not a SIM unlock. As with the original iPhone, the new 3G version is not invulnerable to unlocks. However the Dev Team are hoping to enable it without users needing to crack open the casing and get busy with soldering irons.

A few words of warning before you try using any pwnage tool:

There’s no guarantee with these tools. You could mess up your phone. This is a warning.

You will need to uninstall WinPwn 1.0 before installing 2.0.

Don’t install any YouTube fix if you have AT&T service.

Be up to date with iTunes.

While it have successfully jailbroken the 3G iPhone, the iPhone Dev team has yet able to unlock the newly launched phone. This puts more delay on the new Pwnage tools that many people has been waiting for.

The first generation of iPhone was jailbroken and unlocked by the devs team, however having 3G baseband, the unlocking algorithm for iPhone 3G is not quite the same. Here is the breakdown of what pwnage tools 2.0 can do at this time :

iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 – Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPod Touch with 2.0 – Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPhone (3G) with 2.0 – Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

Still no release schedule yet, but the iPhone Dev team’s blog post suggests the tool will be available soon.
