SlingPlayer app for iPhone will be available on the App Store on Wednesday morning, according to a Sling spokesman. Unfortunately, since the company advises a 3G connection (or at least, EDGE) preferred to enjoy mobile SlingPlayer, this version is only working with Wi-Fi connection.

Sling uses an internet media bridge to stream TV or recorded video from a user’s home to any compatible device like mobile phone.

According to Wired.com:

Sling originally submitted its SlingPlayer app, the software had the ability to stream video over the iPhone’s 3G, EDGE and Wi-Fi connections. However, Apple required Sling to modify the app to work with Wi-Fi only, according to Sling.

It’s reported that a 3G-capable SlingPlayer for iPhone would violate AT&T’s terms of service and could potentially strain AT&T’s 3g network. But it’s a bit weird since other AT&T devices like the BlackBerry Bold supports a 3G-capable SlingPlayer app.

The SlingPlayer app will be available for $30 in the App Store between midnight and 6 a.m. ET Wednesday.

Sling Media have been talking about creating a version of their SlingPlayer software for the iPhone since April 2007, and the demand for just such an app hasn’t let up since. We heard rumors that the development team there were looking at the iPhone SDK and considering the possibilities, and now Dave Zatz from Sling has confirmed that, if they can satisfy the tech side, there’ll likely be a client release on the horizon.

“We were definitely one of those 100,000 who downloaded the iPhone SDK, which we’re currently evaluating. We know it’s a hot platform and we’ll see what our options are” Dave Zatz, Sling Media

Sling uses an internet media bridge to stream TV or recorded video from a user’s home, through their broadband connection, and to any compatible device; the company has clients for cellphones as well as desktop versions. Yet to be answered is how well the iPhone’s EDGE connection could deal with a Sling stream; usually the company advises a 3G connection when using a cellphone.

Having the capability to stream content to my iPhone is a huge plus and adds a great deal of value to the device.

Sling CEO, Blake Krikorian, announced at NAB the company’s intentions to support the upcoming iPhone.

I think the question for them is going to be, how are they going to phase the (iPhone) out?” Krikorian said of Apple. “There’s been some talk about whether it’s going to be a closed device or…open, or whether they’ll phase it (out), so I think it’s going to be up to them to see when (streaming) might be available. But I cannot comment any more than that.
