Prakash was Apple senior director for project integrity and at this point, it’s not clear exactly what he will be doing for Google.

Two security researchers, Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner, have discovered a serious security vulnerability on the iPhone and will present their findings later today at the Black Hat convention in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, they have already demonstrated this flaw in action to CNET‘s Elinor Mills before the conference.

Here’s what happened: While I was talking on the phone to Charlie Miller, his partner, Collin Mulliner, sent me a text message from his phone. One minute I’m talking to Miller and the next minute my phone is dead, and this time it’s not AT&T’s fault. After a few seconds it came back to life, but I was not able to make or receive calls until I rebooted.

The attack is enabled by a serious memory corruption bug in the way the iPhone handles SMS messages, said Miller, a senior security researcher at Independent Security Evaluators. There is no patch, despite the fact that Apple was notified of the problem about six weeks ago, he said.

Piergiorgio Zambrini, who many of you may know him as the creator of the Ziphone application, claims to have found what he believes to be one of the most wide-spread security holes in Apple’s product line. Zambrini has recently applied for a job as an iPhone security engineer at Apple.

We would say he has better qualifications than the lineup Apple currently has. While he is not going to put Apple in danger by releasing any of this information, he says the security flaw is not only found in the iPhone, but in other Apple devices such as iPods and even computers. The security flaw is claimed to be in the most unexpected of all places.

Zambrini claims that he bug involves the audio portion of Apple’s video format, this portion potentially can crash an Apple device whenever the file is played. While he has not stated that it can be used maliciously, but the flaw could “immediately send the device into a panic that leads to a lengthy reboot.” The last thing Apple needs is more crashing on their iPhones. Zambrini has brought this to Apple’s attention back in July, but has yet to hear back about the issue or his application.

This time, it’s not so much a security flaw as it is an ability for others to use up your talk time minutes.

When entering the iPhone’s emergency call feature, you can call 911 in case of an emergency. However, you can also call any other number you’d like. Basically, going to the emergency screen lets you make a phone call to anyone. And while I could see the advantages of this in an emergency, it’s not exactly a good way to lock down your minutes, either.

It would only be a problem if your iPhone was stolen and someone was able to use a bunch of minutes before you could cancel the service. Even so, it’s a bit of an inconvenience, don’t you think?

This is interesting! With all the talk about that security flaw of double tapping the home button to bypass the iPhone’s passcode a few other issues have been brought up as well. For instance, the phone takes a screenshot of everything you do! Each time you hit the home button, change websites in Safari, switch to landscape mode, etc, it takes a capture.

The iPhone does this in order to perform the nifty transitions it’s known for. Zooming, flipping and other maneuvers are also made possible by this and while it’s supposed to delete the screenshots, they don’t actually go all the way away.

It only quick-deletes the items and doesn’t overwrite them. This makes it so anyone that can hack into your phone’s firmware can see exactly what you’ve been up to. This is rather serious but probably won’t be a widespread threat. After all, if your phone is lost or stolen, the person that took it or found it would have to know how to hack it. Hopefully a remedy for this will be included in future fixes, though.

There’s so much going on this week! It’s like you have to stay glued to your computer to soak up all the info. But that’s okay. That’s what we love here at iPhone Buzz. That being said, Jonathan Zdziarsky at O’Reilly is going to hack the iPhone’s security on Thursday, September 11 and you can watch his every move via a live webcast.

So how will he do it? The crafty hacker will use a custom firmware bundle to bypass the iPhone’s passcode lock and gain access to all the phone’s secrets. But the hackerific presentation isn’t meant for thieves and vagabonds. Rather, it’s intended for “law enforcement and anyone else who has a need to access the not-so-readily available data on an iPhone.”

This all shouldn’t come as a big surprise, considering this is the same guy that programmed the NES.app and was one of the many responsible for cracking the iPhone for the first time. And though news of the recent iPhone security flaw where you could bypass the passcode lock just by double-clicking the home button makes it all seem rather simple, we’re assuming this hack is a bit more sophisticated. It probably assumes that simple flaw doesn’t exist.

News in the world of the iPhone has slowed a bit now that we’ve passed the launch phase, but there’s still plenty of tidbits and info to fill the pages of iPhone Buzz. With that said, let’s take a brief look at what this past week has held in store.

The App Store was in the spotlight once again this week as several new apps were announced. iVerse Comics will be coming to the App Store soon, which allows users to access comic books via individual icons on their iPhone home screens. An LED football game, that is very reminiscent of the old handheld games is on the way, too. BeeJive, which was formerly called JiveTalk, offers a more functional IM experience and is even outfitted with background notification should Apple activate it.

We got our hands on a leaked video that showed Last.fm v2.0 in action and Sharpcast’s SugarSync was revealed to be a MobileMe alternative for those who are fed up with the Apple cloud. Most interesting of all, however, is a possible Steve Jobs email that revealed an official tethering function might be coming to the iPhone soon.

The reception issues that dominated last week’s news carried over into this week when a series of independent surveys revealed iPhone 3G performance varies over regions and the networks themselves are what need fixing, not the phone’s internal antenna. Over the course of these tests, Orange France admitted to capping their 3G speeds, but now promised to raise them. We also got a good look at just why the 3G is so slow. It seems all iPhone users need to update to the latest firmware version–otherwise the users with the old version will continue to bog down the network.

Two new international data plans from AT&T were made available to iPhone users on Wednesday and though its intent was to lower prices, it’s still rather steep. A security flaw was revealed this week as well that made it so even password protected phones could be hacked by a few taps of the home button. But not to worry, Apple has admitted to the flaw and will include a fix in the next update.

If you’re keeping up with the Dev Team, you already known Pwnage Tool 2.0.3 is already out. Plus, a brand new iPhone magazine will be released on September 9th called iPhone Life that gives readers the scoop on the latest news, reviews and more.

Finally, this week we featured a review of the BlueAnt V1 Voice Control Bluetooth Headset, which features voice activation functions. And though the audio wasn’t quite as good as it could be, this headset offers functionality like to other.

Your private information may be at risk on your iPhone now that the 2.0.2 update has made the rounds. Why is this the case? Quite simply, anyone can break into your phone and access your private information including Contacts, Safari, Mail and SMS even if you have a password set.

The following was posted on Gizmodo and will explain what the problem looks like and how to avoid it until Apple comes up with a fix for this bug.

First, password protect your phone and lock it. Then slide to unlock and do this:

1. Tap emergency call.
2. Double tap the home button.

Done. You are now in your favorites. This seems like a feature, because you may want to have emergency number in your favorites for quick dial. The security problem here is double. The first: anyone picking up your phone can make a call to anyone in your favorites. On top of that, this also opens access to your full Address Book, the dial keypad, and your voice mail.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the second one is even worse: if you tap on the blue arrows next to the names, it will give you full access to the private information in a favorite entry. And it goes downhill from there:

• If you click in a mail address, it will give you full access to the Mail application. All your mail will be exposed.
• If there’s a URL in your contact (or in a mail message) you can click on it and have full access to Safari.
• If you click on send text message in a contact, it will give you full access to all your SMS.

Hopefully, this major security break that fully exposes your most private information will be solved as soon as possible. Until then, you can avoid any potential breach doing the following:

1. In the iPhone home, go to Settings.
2. Click on General.
3. Click on Home Button.
4. Click on either “Home” or “iPod”.

This way, the double-click on the home button will take the user back to the unlock screen (if you use “Home”) or the iPod screen. I recommend using Home. You will lose the ability to quickly access your favorites for a quick call—which is one of my favorite features—but that’s better than having all your private mails, contacts, and SMS database compromised.

Could the iPhone 3G’s GPS system cause you some trouble? That’s what some people are convinced of. As you know, when you take photos now, the GPS can help keep track of where the photo was taken and organize it all for you for later reference. The issue arises once these photos are uploaded to sites like Flickr.

Even though you can hide the GPS information from viewers, some are concerned that the info still may be accessible. This potentially, could allow others to pinpoint your location.

Want to avoid the risk altogether? Disable the GPS in your iPhone’s settings. Or, do it on a case-by-case basis. Once you open a GPS-using app, just press “Deny” when prompted if you want it to use your location. That will probably do the trick for now.

Radware, who produce enterprise security software, are claiming to have identified a Denial of Service (DoS) flaw in the iPhone’s mobile Safari browser. While not yet seen in the wild, the bug is triggered by a Javascript command on a webpage – which Radware suggest would be linked to via a spam email or SMS message - and could result in Safari crashing or even the iPhone itself becoming unstable. The flaw is present in Apple’s latest publicly available firmware, version 1.1.4, though it is uncertain whether Firmware 2.0 is similarly affected.

The exploit works through what Radware are calling a design flaw in mobile Safari, whereby multiple memory allocation operations on the dynamic memory pool trigger a bug in the garbage collector. There doesn’t seem to be a lasting impact on the cellphone – switching it off and then on again should reset it – but I can see how this might be less than reassuring to your IT manager at work.

Apple are yet to address the issue, and Radware would very much like you to buy their security software to prevent against it. Of course, the obvious advice is – just like browsing the internet anywhere else – to not click on links from sources you don’t trust, to be cautious about random looking sites and to generally be sensible. Though that wouldn’t make Radware any money, I suppose.
