There are several ways to do this, however Giz was kind enough to round up 8 software solutions for you. There is the obvious method, the one that guarantees your ringtones will remain with any future iPhone updates, and that is to just go buy them from the iTunes store.

Past that there are a couple manual methods, and there are a few software methods. Some of them require your iPhone be JailBroken beforehand but there are some that don’t. So without further ado here’s the list:

JailBreak:

SSH in and do a manual file transfer of any song the iPhones iPod part will play into the /library/ringtones directory. Sounds simple enough, but I am counting it as one of the manual methods.

iBrickr, it’s a program for Windows that not only places them in the proper location, but will transcode most audio formats into the required format for you.

iFuntastic is the same as the manual method, its just SSH in and put them in the library, but apparently it makes it into a drag and drop interface, its for the Mac though.

Sendsong works on your iPhone and allows you to use any song from your iPod library, and it moves it into the ringtones directory for you. Its available through AppTapp.

Sans JailBreak:

The second manual method is to still use iTunes, just change the file extension of any .AAC track to the file extension of the ringtones, import into iTunes, and sync.

Rogue Ameoba’s MakeiPhoneRingtone is for the Mac and much like iFuntastic for the SSH hack, this app just does the file extension change and import for you, but with a drag and drop interface.

iToner is for the Mac and is the only one of these options, other than buying the ringtone from iTunes, that costs money. No word on how it does what it does, but it works and it costs $15, so if you want software support and updates when this app quits working, consider whether you’ll make 15 ringtones or more and then buy this app.

iPhoneRingToneMaker is for Windows works its magic in the background as well, but has an audio file editor so you can make just a certain portion into the ringtone.

So, there are several free options, and a couple that cost money, there are several factors that go into choosing which one of these methods to use, so I am not going to say which one I would use, partly because I don’t have an iPhone, partly because I’d try all the free ones until I came upon one I felt comfortable with, and then if I didn’t, I’d just pay up. Anyways, good luck with whichever option you choose.

It doesn’t offer up complete automation as it’s up to you to get the track into AAC format, but after that itll take care of the work. If you remember the ringtone hack was simply changing the file extension, importing it into itunes, and then syncing your iPhone and then viola!

This software takes care of the first two steps for you. Just like the hack itself this program quit working when Apple released an update only a few short hours after releasing the new version of iTunes. However the hack has apparently been restored and this application has been updated so it works again as well.

The program is available from AppleGazette for free. So get to making your ringtones.

So shortly before the big Apple event a couple days ago there was a company that released the program iToner for $15, with this program you could turn any of your songs into ringtones for your iPhone. Then the big Apple event came and Apple announced this feature would be built into the new version of iTunes but would cost $.99.

Now someone else has come along and informed us that by simply changing the file extension of the files you can make any .AAC track into a ringtone. This operation doesn’t even require any software you just edit the file and change the extension to .M4R.

After that all you have to do is import it into your iTunes library and then sync your iPod. So you have two solutions that cost money, iTunes and iToner or you have this method that’s completely free, which do you choose?

Maybe it’s a challenge to see whose is easier?

Although personally I can’t see an easier interface than drag and drop, which is was iToner is bringing to the table. According to the animation on their products front page there is a virtual iPhone that you just drag and drop your AAC or MP3 files into and then click “sync” and viola! it copies your files over as ringtones.

Unlike some ringtone apps though, this one doesn’t require you hack, modify, or reset your iPhone. Your ringtones will also work with future iPhone firmware updates. The cost is $15 and its available now.

If you’ve tried loading the Installer.app software onto your iPhone then you’ve probably had a look through the community applications section to see what the home-brew crowd are getting up to. What you might have missed, however, is an app called Song Sender – imaging something like the Zune’s media sharing feature only without the tedious 3 play/3 day limit, and with no need to be physically near whoever you’re sending music to.

Basically, Song Sender lets you choose a track from your library and then either play it, set it as the current ringtone, or forward it to someone else via email. With that third option you can also add a message explaining why you’ve sent it.

Song Sender can be found in the Community Resources package, which you can install on the iPhone from within Installer.app itself. But remember, sending copyrighted music to others is THEFT and VERY, VERY NAUGHTY. So don’t do it, okay?
