Apple has been catching a lot of flack for its arduous process of approving applications for the iPhone. Apple has announced a new app status tracker for developers so they can see where in the process their app is.

In the UK O2 and Orange are now both offering the iPhone leading many to wonder if sales would be harmed on either network. O2 is reporting that its sales have remained steady since Orange started offering the iPhone. This suggests that eliminating exclusive deals may not hurt the original provider.

TomTom’s iPhone navigation app has drawn criticism from some users for being expensive and lacking features like text-to-speech that others offer. TomTom is set to release a new update that adds the text-to-speech functionality. The update also adds the ability to control iPod music from within the app.

It’s that time of the week once again, dear readers, where we take a look back at what has transpired over the course of these past seven days.

Lots of Apple industry news to report. First, a pay-as-you-go plan for the iPhone 3G is set to launch on the carrier O2. The eastern European sales figures for the device have been rather disappointing on the global scale and China Mobile and Apple are still in talks to try and figure out how to bring the iPhone to the country.

Best Buy is officially going to be a retailer for the iPhone 3G, and they will even set up the phone for you and your email for free, that is, if you buy an accessory package. Another angry iPhone user is suing the company but the reasoning this time is rather interesting. They are claiming Apple and AT&T knowingly sold more iPhones than their network could allow, making for shoddy service all around. Apple has also filed a patent for a multi-touch plus function that would combine touch gestures with other actions like speaking.

EA Mobile will be bringing Spore Origins to the iPhone shortly along with a variety of other EA games like The Sims 3. Two new home automation control systems have also come to the iPhone this week, allowing those with home automation devices like Control4 or Crestron Control to manage the systems by means of an app on their phones. Some developers have been getting their apps rejected from the App Store because their creations have “limited utility.” Plus, the Phonofone II is a super expensive iPod dock that nostalgia lovers and gadget enthusiasts alike will adore.

We also found out that an Apple iPod event is set to happen on September 9th. Much speculation has covered iPhone Buzz about what that event will or will not contain, but we do know a completely retooled iPod nano should make its debut and the iPod touch will get a minor facelift. Dimensions of both devices leaked this week, as well. We also learned that iPhone 2.1 firmware may be released as well as iTunes 8.0. And be sure to check in on all the happenings by watching our live coverage of the iPod event on Tuesday at 10 a.m. PST at http://live.slashgear.com/.

It’s been known around the net that a pay-as-you-go plan for the iPhone 3G would be coming from O2. But what we didn’t know, was when. Now, we’ve gotten a look at what the carrier will be providing and when we can expect it. Listen up UK iPhone users. This one’s for you!

The Pay & Go plan will be available starting September 16 from O2. UK iPhone users will be able to buy the 8GB handset for £349.99 and the 16GB for £399.99. This is a significant difference from the free price tag for a phone on contract. However, if you don’t want any strings attached, the Pay & Go plan seems like a viable option.

For the first 12 months of service, there is unlimited browsing and WiFi. However, you can expect to pay £10 a month following the first year. Visual Voicemail is also excluded from the pay-as-you-go version of the iPhone.

The original iPhone was easily the biggest mobile phone launch ever. The only forseeable way to to surpass it will be with the launch of the 3G. Knowing this, if your company decides to promise an early online sale of the new phone, you’d better make damn sure that your servers are up to handling it. I’m looking at you O2.

O2 decided to allow customers to place orders for the new iPhone 3G yesterday, promising that the new phone would be delivered promptly on the 11th. However, the turnout was slightly more than they seemed to anticipate, as their site wasn’t able to keep up. Many customers were greeted with a variety of error messages, and weren’t able to actually place an order. As of now, the new iPhone is currently out of stock on their website. If you didn’t manage to sneak through the errors somehow, it looks like you’d probably better get your camping gear out.

According to rumors, the company may be allowing customers to sign up for contracts before the launch date, thus alleviating some congestion on July 11th.

If the rumor is to be believed, starting July 1st, you’ll be able to walk into the store and sign up for your iPhone 3G contract. You’ll then be able to pick up your shiny new phone on July 11th and enter a registration number, which would then activate your new account.

I’m really not sure what I think of this practice. On one side, it would certainly get customers in and out of the store in a timely manner. However, those not in the know might not be able to get their hands on a phone come launch day, as they could potentially be sold out before the 11th. We’ll keep an eye out for any official word from O2.

AT&T has still remained mum on the subject of unsubsidized pricing for the iPhone 3G. This is something people are interested in, since many people may not end up qualifying for the unsubsidized price, due to already being mid-contract. (Granted, we still don’t know exactly how AT&T plans on handling this situation). However, some recent news from O2 might give us a good idea of what to expect.

O2 will be charging anywhere from free to £99 (for the 8GB model) which, on the higher end comes up to almost the same as what we are expecting to pay over here. Unlike AT&T, O2 will be offering the iPhone with one of their prepaid plans. You will have to pay an unsubsidized price to get one of these, and they’ve been kind enough to announce the unsubsidized price, which is £350. Now if this unsubsidized price holds true here in the US, we could expect to pay almost $700 for an 8GB iPhone.

Edit: Updated to reflect the correct price.

Back when the iPhone first launched in the UK, many users were disappointed by the comparatively high price Apple and carrier O2 were charging. One of the key messages from the iPhone 3G announcement, then, was the confirmation that the same $199 (or equivalent) entry point would be matched in all markets. O2 have just unveiled their monthly contract details, including confirmation that the carrier will be subsidising the 8GB iPhone 3G to free on certain contracts, as well as revealed that for the first time the handset will be available on pay-&-go prepay.

O2 are yet to release details of pay-&-go iPhones, but we do know the pricing for the contract version. A new £30 plan has been introduced, which means there are now four contract choices (£30, £35, £45, £75); on the two cheaper plans the iPhone 3G will cost £99, whereas on the two higher-priced plans it will be free. That assumes a new eighteen month contract.

All tariffs include unlimited browsing, unlimited Wi-Fi access, visual voicemail and reduced roaming rates with O2′s International Traveller Service. Existing iPhone owners will be able to upgrade to the new 3G model without penalty, as long as they sign up to a new 18-month contract; they’ll pay the normal price for whatever tariff they choose.
