Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that Hulu is coming to the iPhone within a few months — its video is also reported to support streaming content over wifi and 3G. This new app, called “badass”, is following the existing web video apps for the iPhone including CBS’s TV.com, Joost, i.TV and many others.

Why would Apple and AT&T approve this app, which will use up a lot of bandwidth and compete with Apple’s iTunes video store? Because it will help sell iPhones, iPod touches, and AT&T subscriptions. And that’s the whole point of the App Store. (And if we were Hulu, we’d offer Apple and/or AT&T an ad revenue-sharing deal, too.)

Hulu is an online video service that offers hit TV shows, movies and clips. Founded in March 2007, Hulu is co-owned by NBC Universal, News Corp. and Providence Equity Partners.

CBS Mobile releases its new TV.com app for iPhone, offering free streaming video content from CBS, CBS-owned CNET as well as some other places including Today on CNET, the Buzz Report, and Loaded.

The MacWorld wrote:

The App Store description says that the TV.com app works on EDGE, 3G, and Wi-Fi. A quick test of a few clips using a Wi-Fi connection showed acceptable but not stellar quality, and wide-screen clips appeared with black bars all around them. The app also seems a bit unstable and unpolished—Cnet videos showed wildly inaccurate run times of as long as 23 hours—but with a little work (and perhaps some duct tape and a ballpoint pen) it looks promising.

The app uses the iPhone’s Quick Time Player to enable users to watch streaming video that’s available in H.264 format, since the iPhone doesn’t support Adobe Flash.

Yeah, CBS is not alone in this field. The company is competing with other industry giants, including Viacom. NBC, Fox and other TV studios use Joost and Hulu to offer their shows online.

British news agency ITN has launched a video-focused news iPhone application, allowing users to watch video news reports on their iPhone, even if they have no Wi-Fi connectivity or 3G reception. Since its launch over a week ago on Apple’s App Store, it has been downloaded almost 45,000 times in 10 days and is free to use.

The emphasis is currently, however, on free. An ITN spokesperson said that the purpose of the app is to get ITN’s videos “out there” on mobile phones, and at present there were no concrete plans to put ads in the content. In the future, if they were to launch ads, they would “most likely” take the form of sponsorships.

According to Ave Wrigley, ITN’s Head of New Media, the decision to jump into the iPhone market was taken after a successful collaboration with Google on an Android app.

ITN claims is the first video news service available via the iTunes App Store.

These little rays of sunshine wont be found in the App Market anytime soon, instead you have to have a jailbroken iPhone and search them out in Cydia.

The TVOut Project is an open source project brought to you by Backgrounder developer Ashikase. Released into the Big Boss repository you are now able to pick out the applications individually. Though this is available it is not without a few limitations, which is why Screensplitr comes into play.

Screensplitr is the other of the two applications that were released into the wild last weekend. This utility allows you to have full video mirroring which is available for the entire OS. This method however has a much slower framerate of only a few frames per second, which makes it very noticeable. Just tap the icon to switch it on and tap again to turn it off. These utilities are really very fun to play around with so we suggest trying it out if you have the right cable at home.

Mobile software developer, Makayama, introduces new TV application, called Television, for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Will cost you $2.99 in the App Store, this app will allow you to download pre-recorded content from a number of TV networks.

This application:

includes 20 English language channels, such as CNN, NBC, CBS, MTV, Comedy Central, VH1 and many more. British TV from the BBC, ITV and SKY. Australian, French and German channels are also included.

This app has some limitations: the television is not “live”, requires Wi-Fi connection and does not work on a 3G network, all channels offered is already available for free on the web.

However, Television keeps you informed when on the go. No need to download the content like podcasts in iTunes first, just watch it instantly. On-demand.

If any of the recent rumors of the 3G iPhone are even fractionally true, then the iPhone 2.0 is going to be an even hotter potato then existing model. In addition to GPS and Video Conferencing via a second camera on the front of the iPhone, LeMatin.ch report the addition of Mobile TV.

It makes perfect sense – how else is the 3G iPhone going to keep up with the Jones ala LG Vu if Mobile TV was left out? The large display of the iPhone combined with AT&T’s fast 3G network makes it a perfect device for watching TV on the go.

Apple issued a press release earlier today stating that Jobs will kick off WWDC 2008 as expected. The slogan “A landmark event. In more ways than one.” Lets see, Apple already announced and showed off iPhone OS X along with Mac OS X leopard. So it is unlikely he’ll say or do much there. That leaves me to wonder if Jobs will briefly introduce the 3G iPhone and then quickly jump to introducing a new iTablet running OSX Leopard. Make sure to join iPhone Buzz if you want to know the second Jobs make the announcements on Monday June 8!
