Love does not mean you have to like the same kind of music. The dual-dock iLuv iMM173 is an alarm clock outfitted with two iPod docks, one working with your iPhone.

The black, shiny plastic iMM173, which measures 3.4 by 11.2 by 7.2 inches (HWD), has a rounded, contoured casing, with stereo speakers separated by the 4.2-inch LCD. Listed at $149.99 the clock includes a magnetic remote-control holder on the back panel, FM antenna, headphone jack, AC input and a 3.5mm aux input. A switch labeled DST automatically adjusts the clock an hour ahead or behind for Daylight Saving Time.

The iMM173 works with the iPhone however only on the right-hand dock. It has been noted that on the first occasion of docking your iPhone a warning may appear. The device may state that it is not an iPhone-compatible accessory and you need to enter Airplane Mode to disable the phone functions. Subsequent docking will see the warning disappear with no need to worry about receiving calls. The clock offers 4 sources to setting your alarm through either the iPod(s), iPhone, FM or buzzer. Waking up just got more technical.

No matter your age or even device, Mobigrip is apparently ‘the’ safety belt for digital toys, like your ever important iPhone. Hindsight being the devil she is, this would have been perfect for me, however my phone was already on the ground and the projectile in question was a nail-polish bottle.

Taking $10 from your wallet to keep your phone more safely in you hands, the Mobigrip is available in a range of colours including black, white, red, graphite and green. You could go as far as to ordering your Mobigrip with a fireball motif or even including your own design or photo. To attach, simply peel and stick the grip to the ‘clean’ underside of any hand held device. Then just slip the bungee over your finger.

This addition to your iPhone is developed with safety and a longer life of your toys in mind. I like to think that it was designed specifically to mix modern day chic with country and western role playing. My mind already wonders to an office full of iPhone fans, weapons sitting in the back of their suit-pants, drawing their phone in a mid-office stand off during a battle-to-the-death quick-draw for the last can of coke in the vending machine.

Since acquiring chip manufacturer PA Semi, Apple has been coy about their plans for the company. Steve Jobs confirmed that the intention was to phase out the Infineon chips currently used in the iPhone and iPod ranges, but beyond that Apple has been its usual discrete self. Perhaps someone needs to remind that company ethos to Wei-han Lien, currently Senior Manager of Apple’s CPU team; courtesy of his LinkedIn profile he’s let slip that he’s working on the iPhone’s ARM CPU.

Since the iPhone 3G already has an ARM processor, that has led to speculation that Apple are currently making an entirely new chip custom designed for the handset’s specific needs. That would certainly fit in with Jobs’ assertion that having an in-house CPU facility would allow for specially tailored silicon.

Such a chip could integrate not only the basic core but also multitouch touchscreen support, graphics acceleration and other device-specific features, which would make the CPU more efficient and reduce the number of other chips required in future iPhones and iPods. Apple declined to comment on the rumors.

From the Apple event at the beginning of the week to the live hacking webcast, the iPhone has been in the spotlight for much of the past several days.

For starters, Spore Origins came out for the iPhone and it offers two modes of gameplay that fully utilize the iPhone’s unique functions. Plus, we learned that PhoneSaber would be returning to the App Store as Lightsaber Unleashed to more fully integrate with the release of the upcoming Lucas Arts game, The Force Unleashed.

Apple’s Let’s Rock event was on Tuesday and SlashGear was there with live blogging. iTunes 8.0 was released as were the new iPod nano and a revised iPod touch. iPhone firmware 2.1 was also announced and it made its debut on Friday promising improved battery life and several bug fixes. Steve Jobs even talked to CNBC.com following the keynote to give a little insider info on the latest iPod line.

We also learned this week that a hacker would be having a live webcast to show how easily the iPhone could be cracked. What we found out was that the iPhone actually takes screenshots of all you do in order to perform transitions. However, these screenshots are not overwritten, meaning they could be accessed by a hacker.

Not too much gear talk this week, but we did get a look at the iBikeConsole, which lets you control your iPod and keep both hands on the handle bars at the same time.

But now the time has come and passed and we know what the event brought. And to be honest, this time around, all the speculation was spot on the money.

For starters, iTunes 8.0 was announced and is now available for download. The update is quite significant, adding HD TV shows to their line up for $2.99 each and putting NBC back on board, so your favorite shows like 30 Rock and Heroes can be downloaded once again.

But most importantly, iTunes received a new feature called Genius, which intelligently creates playlists for you. Remember Pandora Radio? Yeah, it’s sort of like that, but only built right into your iTunes and utilizing your own music. So, when you play a song, a sidebar shows you what goes together with your current selection. And when you buy a song from the iTunes Store, Genius suggests other songs you may like.

We also found out that all the iPod nano speculation was, indeed, true. In fact, every little detail we heard was confirmed! The nano has gone back to what everyone liked about the second gen nano, that is, the slim form factor. With an aluminum casing and curved glass, this iPod is certainly nice to look at. And it really is thin. An accelerometer is also built in, letting you view cover art in coverflow and watch videos in landscape mode.

It’s available in a variety of colors. So many, Steve calls them “nano-chromatic.” Your options include black, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, violet, and red. The 8GB is $149 and the 16GB is $199, though you’ll have to wait until next week to buy the latter.

Lastly, the iPod touch got a makeover as well, though it was much less comprehensive. This touch will have a contoured stainless steel body and will be much thinner than the last model. Genius is included as is Nike+. No external dongle is required, either. The receiver is built into the iPod. There was no change in capacity for these devices this time around but they will sell the 8GB for $229, the 16GB for $299 and the $32GB for $399.

The iBikeConsole takes iPod accessories to another level. And while we’ve seen a ton of accessories and cases that attach your iPod to your body somehow, this one keeps your iPod hooked onto your bike.

If you like to go on bike rides and listen to music at the same time, you may find that navigating the roads and fiddling with your iPod could be dangerous business. This case clips onto your bike’s handle bars right in the center. The controls then attach to either side of the iPod, keeping the device right in front of you, and the controls at your hands.

This way, you can skip a track and adjust the volume without ever having to take your hands off the handle bars. The Mode button on the controls also let you check your mph, distance traveled and other nifty stats. You can get the iBikeConsole now for $76 and it is compatible with the first through third generation of iPod nanos. We’ll have to see if they’ve made any adjustments for iPod nano 4th gen once its announced tomorrow!

The banners unfurled for the “Let’s Rock” event slated for tomorrow at 10 a.m. from Apple’s Cupertino headquarters and we are as ready as ever. Apple is known for having tricks up their sleeves and this time around they’re readily inviting the media, dubbing the event as a “big deal.”

We expect to see new iPod nano models that will be slimmed down considerably. The iPod touch line is also expected to receive a refreshing. The latest word is that we’ll see an iPhone firmware 2.1 update and iTunes 8.0–which pretty much seems confirmed as the new version accidentally leaked on Apple’s website. A possible subscription service for iTunes is also expected.

And though none of the specifics about what Apple will announce are for sure, yet, one thing is for certain. SlashGear will be there live and onsite blogging as the news unfolds. Be sure to bookmark http://live.slashgear.com/ and visit us at 10 a.m. on Tuesday–that’s tomorrow! We’ll be live blogging and full analysis will follow along with details for all of the announcements.

It’s that time of the week once again, dear readers, where we take a look back at what has transpired over the course of these past seven days.

Lots of Apple industry news to report. First, a pay-as-you-go plan for the iPhone 3G is set to launch on the carrier O2. The eastern European sales figures for the device have been rather disappointing on the global scale and China Mobile and Apple are still in talks to try and figure out how to bring the iPhone to the country.

Best Buy is officially going to be a retailer for the iPhone 3G, and they will even set up the phone for you and your email for free, that is, if you buy an accessory package. Another angry iPhone user is suing the company but the reasoning this time is rather interesting. They are claiming Apple and AT&T knowingly sold more iPhones than their network could allow, making for shoddy service all around. Apple has also filed a patent for a multi-touch plus function that would combine touch gestures with other actions like speaking.

EA Mobile will be bringing Spore Origins to the iPhone shortly along with a variety of other EA games like The Sims 3. Two new home automation control systems have also come to the iPhone this week, allowing those with home automation devices like Control4 or Crestron Control to manage the systems by means of an app on their phones. Some developers have been getting their apps rejected from the App Store because their creations have “limited utility.” Plus, the Phonofone II is a super expensive iPod dock that nostalgia lovers and gadget enthusiasts alike will adore.

We also found out that an Apple iPod event is set to happen on September 9th. Much speculation has covered iPhone Buzz about what that event will or will not contain, but we do know a completely retooled iPod nano should make its debut and the iPod touch will get a minor facelift. Dimensions of both devices leaked this week, as well. We also learned that iPhone 2.1 firmware may be released as well as iTunes 8.0. And be sure to check in on all the happenings by watching our live coverage of the iPod event on Tuesday at 10 a.m. PST at http://live.slashgear.com/.

But now, rumor has it that we’ll see two major software updates on the big day.

We’ll most likely see iTunes 8.0 released on September 9th, which is expected to have a few new cool features like “Genius,” which recommends music to you, HD-quality TV episodes for purchase and grid view.

We may also see the release of iPhone 2.1 firmware, which could bring significant changes to the iPhone and perhaps put to rest a few of the issues it has currently been having. Background push notification is expected to be added along with directional GPS. Developer seeds may not have gotten all that Apple is planning, either, so a few surprises could be in store.

Dimension drawings of the iPod nano 4G and the iPod touch 2G have supposedly been leaked. No one knows if these images are legit, but they seem to fall in line with what we know so far about the devices thought to be announced next week at the Apple event next Tuesday.

Casing changes are expected on both media players. The nano is expected to morph back into a long and slim device and adopt a widescreen display while the touch will look very much like the iPhone 3G. The iPod nano dimensions are 90.75mm tall by 38.75mm wide by 6.08mm deep and will have a curved profile. These dimensions seem to sync up perfectly with the XSKN EXO line of iPod nano 4G cases.

The iPod touch 2G’s dimensions are 111mm tall by 61.8mm wide and 8.4mm deep, according to the rumored drawings. And though this is larger than the first-gen touch, a curved back panel should hide the bulge quite nicely. Of course, this could be a fake image, so we’ll have to wait and see until Tuesday for what Apple actually has in store. Be sure to tune into http://live.slashgear.com/ at 10am EST to catch live blogging of the event.

I feel very much like a bird that’s attracted to shiny things right now, but I can’t help myself. Isn’t this Phonofone II beautiful? It’s in the shape of a Victrola and while you may have seen other iPod docks that look like this one in the past, you’ve never seen one that functions like it, that’s for sure.

The Phonofone II – Limited Edition Black is designed by Tristan Zimmerman and while it may look retro, it certainly doesn’t perform like it. No external power source is required. In fact, it outputs sound through just the power of your iPod or iPod touch. Unfortunately, the iPod nano and Shuffle won’t work here, but it’s still pretty cool.

The best types of music to groove to on this old-school treasure are Classical, Blues and Folk. And with classic tastes come hefty price tags. You can get your very own Phonofone II for $600. I gulped aloud when I saw the price, but that doesn’t make this sound amplifier any less pretty.
