Case Mate Naked iPhone case: super-discrete protection

iPhone cases area mixed blessing: yes, they protect your precious handset from bumps and scratches, but they also tend to add bulk and detract from the appearance of the cellphone. So Case Mate are asking for trouble if their so-called Naked iPhone Case doesn’t live up to expectations. From the pictures it certainly looks relatively low-profile, and the fact that it covers the whole iPhone should mean protection is as good as you can hope for from something not made to, say, US military ruggedization specs. However, Case Mate have another claim to fame for their case: apparently the screen protector uses a patent pending “electrostatic membrane”.

Why is that so important? Well, Case Mate say that it’s the only screen protector that lets you use the iPhone as if it weren’t in a case or sleeve at all; that, in fact, it “mimics the way the iPhone screen works”. Impressive claims, but their site is pretty low on details (and testimonials, too, though we’ll let them off as it’s a new product!)

Basically, what you’re looking at is a discrete way to protect your iPhone from bumps and scratches, while keeping it looking unhampered, at least to the casual glance. No, it won’t promise to boost reception like Griffin’s ClearBoost, but then again it doesn’t look like a brick is humping your iPhone either. It’s available now priced at $34.99.

My Touch Keys keyboard cutout screen protector for iPhone

Love that iPhone look but hating the on-screen keyboard? Don’t worry, you’re not alone; Ruddy Ugarte was so fed up at smushing his fingers against the touchscreen and ending up with typo-filled emails that he came up with My Touch Keys, a transparent screen protector with cut-outs for the iPhone’s QWERTY keyboard.

Clinging to your iPhone’s screen via static, the overlay apparently lets your fingers learn where the individual keys are, based on the texture. Obviously in the photos they’ve added a blue tint so you can see it attached; in real life it’s transparent, and My Touch Keys say it won’t distract from watching video or even using gestures such as zooming in other apps.

Screen Protector turns iPhone into pocket mirror

Gadget screens that double up as vanity mirrors seemed a pretty silly idea at first, but having seen numerous people – male and female – use their cellphone to check for stray mascara or spinach in teeth, I suppose it has some degree of merit. If you’ve been disappointed at not being able to harness your iPhone to suss out whether your nose-hair needs trimming, then perhaps the Artwizz MirrorFilm screen protector will cheer you up.

Basically a reflective, self-adhesive sheet with cut-outs for the iPhone’s Home button, earpiece and proximity sensor, it might not look as slick as, say, LG’s Shine but for around $10 you can’t complain too loudly. iLounge did find it tricky to remove air bubbles, but if you’ve a steady hand and some patience MirrorFilm might mark the end of embarrassing “did you know your glass eye is in back-to-front?” situations.

When Otterbox releases a product, it’s known to be built like a tank. All of Otterbox’s products are built to provide maximum protection to your device, and or cigars. Today Otterbox released 2 new cases for the iPhone, both of which weren’t really designed to look good, but provide absolute full protection for your iPhone.

Coming in two styles, one of the cases is a sleek yellow and black, while the other case is fully black. Protection of the phone is definitely emphasized with 3 layers of protection, full surface protection of the phone while still leaving full access to the proximity sensor, speaker, volume buttons, and the sync/charge port.

At a respectable $49.95 for these monster cases, anybody who wants protection on their phone that’ll make their it look as if it was just taken out of the box should take a look at Otterbox.

Got a touchscreen phone? Hate fingerprints? Don’t mind looking like a tool? Well then Phone Fingers are for you.

Now you can use an iCondom before you [insert expletive] with your iPhone. These things that appear to be made from latex, maybe rubber, go on your fingers and protect your iPhone screen from direct contact while still allowing you to interact with it.

You can apparently get 5 pieces, enough for one hand, for $3. personally, I’d just go buy a screen cover, sure that wouldn’t do away with the fingerprints, but I wouldn’t feel as bad about just wiping the iPhone on my shirt if there were something there to protect the screen.

iPhone screen damage: DIY or SOS?

Personally my DIY skills are just about limited to switching on the blender for some freshly crushed ice for my cocktail, but I know there are some of you out there a lot handier with their hands and for whom the thought of sending a gadget off for official – expensive – repair makes you half choke. Over at iPhone Atlas they’ve been looking at options for when cellphone calamity strikes: a cracked iPhone screen.

Sending the iPhone off to Apple for an official repair job will set you back a not-insubstantial $199 for the 4GB version and $249 for the 8GB (plus $6.95 for shipping and handling); that’s assuming they don’t call upon their “service may not be available if your iPhone has been damaged due to accident or abuse” disclaimer.

The alternative is trying to fix it yourself, using third-party replacement components (costing from $150 to $200) and in the process well and truly voiding your warranty. PDAParts offer a video guide to the operation, shown below:

Let’s face it, you’ll need guts to try to do it yourself. This is one of those occasions when it might be better to stump up the money and let the pros take care of it; or, more sensibly again, invest in some protection with an iPhone case, such as the range available from the MY iTablet Store.

invisibleSHIELD for iPhone: a must have accessory!

Listen, I don’t care how careful you are at protecting your precious iPhone. It only takes one slip of the hand to put you into tears. Do you really think that buying a case will protect the iPhone all the time? Think again. There will be a time when you need to take it out of the case for one reason or another.

I usually don’t go overboard and sell a particular accessory, but in this case I’m pushing the invisibleSHIELD full-body for the iPhone. It literally covers over 97% of the iPhone. Not only that, it offers a much better grip. If you’ve held the iPhone for any length of time, you may have noticed how slippery the litter bugger is. It makes it very difficult to type one-handed using the thumb. I’m now even able to type with two thumbs, the way I use to type on other smartphones.
