Unfortunately, there are still no any new “native” fuctionalities like a cut and paste or Bluetooth file transfer to other devices.

Okay, maybe next time…

Apple just dropped the fresh new iPhone firmware 2.2 into iTunes and not a minute too soon. We have been impatiently awaiting launch for days now after reading the rumored date of November 21st. Now we welcome it with open arms.

After the long 246MB download users will be booting their iPhone to new features such as Google Street View and walking directions, new Safari interface changes and fixes, the addition of emoticons, better sound quality in the visual voice mail department, and let’s not forget the over-the-air podcast downloading. You probably won’t be seeing us for a few days as we enjoy the new fruit that apple has delivered.

All in all Apple has really gone the extra mile with this update. But again we see smaller changes to things that we didn’t previously care about. What we are still itching to see is the addition of features such as copy and paste and the standard MMS. We can’t stay bitter for long though, we just have to keep our fingers crossed for next time.

It blows me away that the slightest fix on the iPhone yields huge results. In my unscientific side by side speed test to see which version will load SlashGear and iPhone Buzz faster on WiFi and 3G, the result on WiFi isn’t that big of a deal, but on 3G – iPhone 2.01 blew 2.0 out of the water!

Loading up SlashGear on WiFi, iPhone 2.01 finished roughly 2-seconds faster than 2.0. iPhone OS 2.01 literally obliterated 2.0 beating it by a massive lead of 26-seconds when loading up iPhoneBuzz.com! If you don’t believe me, watch the side-by-side video below and see it for yourself. Poking around in the about page of the new firmware, it looks like there’s a new modem firmware. iPhone OS 2.01′s modem firmware is now 01.48.02 versus 01.45.00 on iPhone OS 2.0.

Other differences include call quality. On 3G, I’m barely able to maintain a phone call (at home), while 2.01 “seems” to have better reception, allowing me to finish a full conversation with Ewdison.

Another notable improvement includes faster SMS. By faster, you can say good-bye to the lagging keyboard. I still need to test out the back-up feature, which everyone on the net is swearing up and down the pole that it’s much faster now.

That’s all for now from me, but feel free to chime in and post your comments should you discover something new.

Update: NetShare still works, you need to delete and reconfigure your profile. WiFi and Google maps is fixed, no more missed calculation even using without gps signal and assisted.

There’s a big difference between the first gen iPhone and the iPhone 3G. Apple is moving forward with firmware updates much quicker this time around. In fact, the 3G 2.1 firmware is already being offered to developers for beta testing.

Initial talk is showing that the main focus of the updates will revolve around the GPS. Specifically, Core Location features are being added that track your direction of movement and rate of speed. It’s not turn-by-turn yet, but it looks to be well on its way.

No word yet on whether or not 2.1 will address the accelerometer issues, app crashes or random reboots, but it definitely seems like Apple is focused on expanding what’s currently inside the iPhone 3G to its fullest capacity.
