While 3D content for the iPhone is limited, the iWear range of headsets are also useful for watching iPhone and iPod content on a “larger” display.  Battery powered, the headsets include an in-line remote and headphones, and can be used with other AV sources with the included adapter cables.

In the box you get the iBooster unit itself, built into a docking cradle, together with a magnetic vehicle antenna, cigarette lighter power adapter and printed installation guide. It’s compatible with both the original iPhone 2G and latest iPhone 3G, and Wilson also produce a model intended for the BlackBerry range of smartphones. Each will go on sale in Spring 2009.

Installation is straightforward: the iPhone drops into the cradle, then you plug in the antenna and stick it, via the magnetic pad, to the outside of your vehicle. The power adapter hooks up to another port, and that automatically powers the iBooster on. No settings or tweaking necessary.  If you’re using a case for your iPhone that means it won’t fit into the cradle, the amplification will work wirelessly up to 2.5ft away from the iBooster, so you can leave it on a seat or in a different mount.

While most of the design decisions make sense, it’s not all quite so straightforward. The strangest aspect of the iBooster is its inability to natively recharge the iPhone; you need to add a separate charger, that plugs into a third port on the cradle. Why it can’t split the supply from the cigarette lighter is unclear; we’re waiting to hear back from Wilson about why this is the case, as those with only one suitable power socket in their car will have to choose between boosting or recharging.  We’re also hoping they can confirm which bands the iBooster supports, and as such whether it’s only currently of use with US-spec 3G or will handle Euro 3G too.

Wilson aren’t aiming the iBooster at your everyday iPhone user – the $350 price underscores that – but at the mobile professional for whom ensuring a few extra bars, and therefore a few extra calls and a successful data connection, is worth the hassle.  In fact they promise to increase the transmission power to the cell site by up to 20x over the iPhone alone.  Every iBooster is apparently manufactured within a room with zero cellular signals, connected to a central server that monitors quality actually during the build process.

Of course, ease of setup and convenience is all pointless if the device doesn’t actually do what it’s supposed to: boost iPhone signal strength. Initial impressions suggest greater call stability and improved sound quality, but we’ll be testing the iBooster out over the next week to see if it’s really worth that premium price-tag.  Keep reading iPhone Buzz to find out the results!

The Incase Power Slider has a built-in 1,220mAh rechargeable battery that will recharge your iPhone 3G without the need for cables. Incase claims that this battery will deliver up to 330hrs extra standby time, up to 26hrs audio playback, up to 5hrs 3G talktime (or double that in 2G talktime), 7hrs video or up to 5hrs 3G web browsing (or 6hrs connecting via WiFi).

This battery also has an LED charge display similar to that of the MacBook Pro batteries. If your going to pick one of these up your wont have to wait much longer. They are going to be on sale starting November 28th for around $100.  This may be a bit more than a typical backup battery, but it holds more of a charge.

No word on price yet, but until then we’ll just have to speculate on quality. The MP101 has a 5 watt LED bulb, a 640 x 480 display and a 2 watt speaker. None of this sounds too impressive so far, but if the item turns out to be super cheap, it may be a fun thing to try out.

But hey, in a small, contained area, the MP101 might do the trick. Like on a plane, perhaps? In the bathroom? I don’t know.

Assembling the Elan Form and Nu Form is easy as pie – they snap together and come apart vertically along the sides. From an aesthetic point of view the cases look smooth, and they add a nice, contoured feel to the handset. The Wave Case is a little trickier to assemble and take apart; make sure to watch the video below to see “how I do it”.  If both form and function is your thing, then the easy slide-off bottom section is perfect for when you need to dock the iPhone 3G.  Unfortunately the Wave Case doesn’t offer the same easy dock feature, so you’ll need to take it apart if you want to sit your iPhone 3G in the actual Apple dock.

When it comes to the fundamentals, it doesn’t matter which case you opt for: each is designed to give you full access to the microphone, speaker, and Dock Connector, hence the open bottom design.  The top is fully open as well, freeing up the headphone port and Sleep/Wake button.  There’s a cut out on the back for the camera and the left side is fully cut open for access to the side controls.

As I mentioned above, all three cases come with a rigid, non-adhesive clear plastic screen protector, and there’s a black cleaning cloth included in the package too.  This is an excellent way for Griffin to add value to their cases.  You may or may not like the screen protector.  I usually don’t use a screen protector at all and leave the glass opened; I’d be interested to know what you do, so leave what you think in the comments below.

I find it ironic that Apple takes every effort to make sure our user experience is nothing less than the best, even right down to what applications are allowed on iTunes; yet they can’t seem to get the battery right.  I counted ELEVEN different things you should do to your iPhone 3G daily in order to ensure that it DOES NOT die on you during that oh so important sales call or while chit chatting with your wife.  We’re busy people, not to mention busy enjoying the awesome 3G speed surfing the web, getting push email or trying to hook up with an old friend on Loopt.  The last thing we need to be concerned with is — turning off EQ, making sure push email is off or worried if I should fetch my email less (the list goes on and on and on!).  This is nonsense! Of all the suggestions, this particular one gave me a few chuckles.

Use Airplane Mode in low- or no-coverage areas: Because your iPhone always tries to maintain a connection with the cellular network, it may use more power in low- or no-coverage areas. Turning on Airplane Mode can increase battery life in these situations; however, you will be unable to make or receive calls. To turn on Airplane Mode, go to Settings and set Airplane Mode to On.

I’m not sure if it’s even possible to improve the iPhone 3G’s battery at this point, so I’ve resolved to the fact that the battery is a piece of junk and it should be criminal of Apple to release such a superior device on an inferior battery!  At this point there’s nothing I can do, and you must be feeling the same.  There is some hope; third-party battery extenders.  There are three brands/makes that I know of: Mophie Juice Pack, iGo battery extender from Mobility Electronics or the Kensington Mini Battery Pack and Charger.  Check out the video for more details on the first two, and jump on over to Geek.com to read up on the last one.

From a practical side of things, if the QingBar MP101 is priced in the low $300-$400 price range, it may be worth it.  The iPhone 3G is a powerful device especially with all the enterprise level applications getting shipped with iPhone 2.0.  You can really now use the iPhone 3G as a legitimate business device to do presentations, run product demo videos etc.  So yeah, bring the QingBar MP101 to market and I think it should do okay.
