Flash on iPhone: Ask Apple

After an Adobe Support Engineer was asked when the iPhone and iPod touch would support flash on Mobile Safari, a response concluded that the wrong company was being asked. It doesn’t look like an update with Flash is near, but possibly a member of any of the iPhone dev teams can hack it up.

I personally think that Google bought exclusivity of flash video’s for YouTube on the iPhone, taking away any thoughts of flash for Safari on the iPhone, not allowing you to browse other flash video websites other than YouTube. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out. There is flash somewhere in the iPhone as it’s running the YouTube app, but not being used for Safari. Hopefully Apple has future updates with the iPhone allowing Flash to run with Safari.

1.1.2 SecPack Found

According to the iPhone dev team, a SecPack has been extracted from firmware version 1.1.2 making it possible to re-flash the baseband of the phone after it has been unlocked.

This means that unlocking software can now revirginize your phone with 1.1.2 and bring it back to it’s original state before unlocking the phone.

Lets hope this goes as well as the 1.1.2 jailbreak. Is it possible that Apple is finally realizing that they can’t compete with the dev team and will eventually have to give an unlock code anyways? Lets hope this works out, but for now, stick with 1.1.1.

iPhone Flash support caught on video

Eagle-eyed iPhone lover pixelperfect over at the MacTalk forums has been poring over the official Apple “Welcome/Guided Tour” video (probably trying to kill some time until the handset makes it outside of the US) and has spotted what looks like a Flash-based mp3 player interface shown on the mobileSafari browser.

Seen 22 seconds into the video, it’s a simple set of controls on the nytimes.com page underneath a story with an mp3 link.

“I believe that Apple will eventual allow for third party app’s to be written for the iPhone, and flash will be coming eventually. Also, it is interesting to notice that the same shot also has the “Aqua” look of the popdown menu on the top of the page… So this may very well be a very early pre production unit” pixelperfect

Now as we all know (and lament) Apple have yet to implement general Flash support for the iPhone, which leaves pixelperfect to theorise that they either mocked up the video demonstration using a desktop version of Safari or, alternatively, early pre-production handsets had Flash but it was removed due to instability or some other reason.

The biggest problem with todayâ€™s mobile phone is the user interface or UI.Â You need to scroll, click scroll and scroll some more just to find an application or a contact name.Â All of that is about o change.Â Do you remember the NVIDIA Quark concept phone I wrote about a few days back?Â It so happens that the ladies at Shiny Shiny took a demo video of the phoneâ€™s interface.Â Youâ€™ll see that it shows example of the chipâ€™s capabilities as well as how easy it is to maneuver around the new user interface.Â I think Louis is right about it looking like the PSPâ€™s interface.Â Itâ€™s all very flashy indeed.
