The focus of this update? Why, bug fixes, of course.

What’s interesting though is Apple removed the push notification service from this release. As you may remember, this service is intended to act as the basis for background process support. This would be especially beneficial developers of messaging services like AIM. Prior to this development, the feature was to be delivered in September, but that seems like it won’t happen now.

It’s unclear the reasons why push notification was removed, but we do know that it is being held for “further development.” Perhaps Apple is being extra cautious now and waiting to release changes and updates until they are certain they will work. They’ve probably had enough of the MobileMe fiasco and don’t want a repeat.

It looks like Apple is moving right along with updates, as the iPhone 2.1 beta 3 firmware has just been seeded to developers.

The beta is meant for developers to test, only. However, phones that have been updated to this new version cannot be used to develop apps for the App Store. Likewise, once you update, your phone cannot be reverted back to the old version, so update with caution, developers.

Word has it that the update contains numerous bug fixes and beginning support for background notifications.

There’s a big difference between the first gen iPhone and the iPhone 3G. Apple is moving forward with firmware updates much quicker this time around. In fact, the 3G 2.1 firmware is already being offered to developers for beta testing.

Initial talk is showing that the main focus of the updates will revolve around the GPS. Specifically, Core Location features are being added that track your direction of movement and rate of speed. It’s not turn-by-turn yet, but it looks to be well on its way.

No word yet on whether or not 2.1 will address the accelerometer issues, app crashes or random reboots, but it definitely seems like Apple is focused on expanding what’s currently inside the iPhone 3G to its fullest capacity.
