That means that shortly, we’ll have access to the much-improved app which is scheduled to have features such as a News Feed that is more like the one on Facebook’s site, the ability to “like” items and a new customizable home screen. More importantly, it will also have video support for the iPhone 3GS, something which Hewitt threw-in at the last second, unexpectedly. And perhaps best of all, the app will have the ability to manage events, finally.

Hewitt explains the new features:

3. Events (including the ability to RSVP)

5. Pages
6. Create new photo albums
7. Upload photos to any album
8. Zoom into photos
9. Easier photo tagging
10. Profile Pictures albums
11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
13. Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
14. Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page
15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call

Announced Tuesday at the Game Developers Conference, the update to the Scrabble app will integrate seamlessly with the game’s Facebook version. iPhone and iPod Touch users who have purchased the app will be able to create new games or join games with their Facebook-using friends.

This app will be running on Edge or 3-G as well as Wi-Fi connection.

Potentially in line with the iPhone 3.0 firmware update out tomorrow, the added abilities to interact with your friends through your iPhone is really exciting. Ongoing support and developments will be interesting to watch, more so with the developers needing to get contracts and the like in order for Year 2 of the iPhone app.

A few examples: You are able to use your Facebook account to find places to meet your friends using maps on Whrrl. Other options include challenging your friends to play Agency Wars, Binary Game, iBowl, Live Poker and Tap Tap Revenge 2. Other examples include using Facebook Connect with the Urban Spoon application. Once connected, you can see which restaurants your friends have reviewed on the iPhone as you are walking to dinner and share your thoughts afterwards. There will be more Facebook enabled applications available in the near future within the Apple App Store!

Here’s what Facebook users can do with their iPhone:

• Seamlessly connect their Facebook account and information with the iPhone app
• Connect and share experiences with friends who also use the same iPhone app
• Share user information and actions on the iPhone app with friends on Facebook

Dave Morin, senior platform manager at Facebook, said:

“For the first time, your iPhone apps can now have friends,” said Morin. “I can pull out my iPhone and play it not only my other friends with iPhones, but I can also play with my mom —-she can join in and play with us on her computer.”

Facebook have revealed that, out of its 4 million daily mobile users, their Facebook for iPhone mobile client sees approximately 1.64 million daily active users, compared to the Facebook for Blackberry app which has has approximately 1.56 million daily users.

Launched and hit the App Store at July last year, Facebook for iPhone client could access to more technology than Facebook iPhone websites. With the native application, for example,  you can take photos  and upload them instantly to your Mobile Uploads album on Facebook.

It will be interesting to see what sort of applications are born out of this. And since founder Mark Zuckerberg calls Facebook Connect “Facebook for the rest of the web,” I think we will be in for a real treat with this added iPhone compatibility. With all of that Facebook user information at their fingertips, developers will no doubt have a field day with the possibilities. 

It’s an exciting time for watching technology change and grow into these newer platforms.
