Apple has reached into its bag of app approval tricks and approved the Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone only to come back and remove it from the app store later. There was no explanation offered as to why the app was removed.

However, the developer thinks that the pulling of the app had to do with a work around that is available to allow access to the commodore BASIC interpreter. Access to the interpreter was reportedly the reason the app was initially rejected by Apple.

The result is shown in the video below where you can see gpSPhone running at a minimum 150 FPS and maxing out at about 225 FPS, with sound and 0 frameskip! This is a HUGE performance increase where the iPhone 3G needed frameskipping just to reach 60 FPS!
