Cleaning the iPhone: Do Not Use Glass Cleaner!

Ryan is very proud of the video he produced on how to clean the iPhone. Unfortunately, Apple clearly stated not to use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean iPhone. It has always been common sense (at least for me) to steer clear of any and all of the cleaning solutions mentioned above when cleaning the screens of my phones or laptops.

These cleaning solutions may end up eating away at the protective coating, resulting in you doing more harm than you think. Click over for video.

I received a formal complaint from Mr. Right Thumb that he was being overworked, so he’s going on strike. Oh gosh, what am I going to do? Gesturing totally relies on the ability of the thumb working in synch with the index finger – right? Wrong.

Finger tips: Take full advantage of iPhone “.?123″ shortcuts

David Pogue discovered the awesome shortcut for entering the period, but why stop there? If you’ve used the primary keyboard on the iPhone for any length of time, you will surely notice that it’s missing all punctuation marks, including numbers. Taking Pogue’s discovery, I’ve been able to shortcut my way through all punctuation marks including numbers!

Instead of going through the following steps every single time you need to enter a period or any other punctuation marks:

(1) Tap the “.?123” key in the lower left to summon the punctuation layout. (2) Type the period. (3) Type the ABC key in the lower left to return to the alphabet layout.

You can do it in one simple motion by tapping and hold the “.?123” key. Once the punctuation layout appears, slide your finger to any keys including numbers, and then release.

Amazingly, the ABC layout returns automatically. Thanks David!

Did you also know that the iPhone and Apple Bluetooth Headset auto pair? I didn’t either, until I saw this post on Gizmodo. According to Apple Store, docking both the iPhone and the headset and the dock will charge both devices and it will automatically sync them. How cool is that?

I got a number emails asking if iPhone supports Microsoft Exchange. The short answer is yes it does. However, from what we’ve determined, this is not “true push-email” because the protocol still connects to exchange using IMAP protocols. Nonetheless, you can still use Exchange should you have all the settings.

I’ve taken screen shots and outlining step by step how to setup Microsoft Exchange on the iPhone.

Step 1: Go to Settings and select Mail

Step 2: Add new account and select “Other”

Step 3: Click on Exchange, third tab over (make sure you or your admin flipped on IMAP support) and enter all the correct settings and you’re good to go!

iPhone abuse caught on video, but it’s a tough little fighter

ifixit tried to open up their iPhone delicately so they could pore through its entrails; PC World on the other hand seem to have modelled their playtime on the Inquisition, putting a poor, innocent Apple cellphone through a series of stress-test trials. They even caught the abuse on video, including determined scratching at the display with metal and dropping it multiple times onto concrete.

PC World’s primary target was the 3.5-inch glass-fronted display, and given the generally delicate nature of touchscreens it’s a reasonable expected weak-spot. However their attempts to scratch the glass with keys, keychains and more didn’t marr it, and neither did a number of drops from anything up to six foot onto the floor.

A few gouges along the metal edges were the sum total of the iPhone’s injuries, sustained when dropped from head-height onto the sidewalk, but otherwise the handset looked – and worked – normally:
