The creator of NetSketch –a collaborative drawing tool for iPhone– recently launched his new iPhone paiting app: Layers. “It offers a balanced set of painting tools, layers, and an intuitive interface to boot,” said Ben Gotow.

Main features of this app including:

Allows you to add up to five layers to each drawing
Add a layer from a photo to trace your subject
Use the eraser tool to remove parts of one layer and reveal details of the layer beneath
Full-featured eraser gives you fine-grained control over layer transparency
You can email your drawing as a PSD file with the layers intact
Two fingered pan and zoom
Eight high-quality brushes
Generous undo history that is saved on exit
Email as JPG or PSD with layers intact

Wound magazine goes iPhone

Art magazine Wound is introducing an iPhone version of its summer issue to complement the print and online versions. The iWound app [iTunes link], which costs you $4.99, contains 402 pages of original content, 15 minutes of audio and video and several features.

The central theme of wound for summer 2009 is ‘la grande illusion’. The new close-up section concentrates on electro musician peaches. This brand new section provides a unique perspective on a different artist every quarter, which gives a personal sense of the individual through concepts and ideas. Curatorial in approach, rather than celebrity-watching, the reader is given a sense of the featured individual, her specific talents, ideas and inspirations.

Send real postcards from your iPhone

While you’re on holiday, have you ever been wanted to send your friend or family a picture or postcard from your iPhone? I mean, a real, physical postcard or printed photo.

An on-demand printing company, Amazing Mail, which has integrated two iPhone apps, Postino (free) and PicCard (99 cents) into its service, will print your cards on high-quality paper, and send them worldwide.

Both offer the ability to print and send physical copies of photographs taken on your iPhone, priced at between 99 cents and $1.99, depending on where you’re shipping to…

Postino is a good example of how the service can work. You snap a picture with the iPhone camera, select a frame, draw an accompanying message or signature, and enter the address details of the recipient. The app can also send cards via email, if you’d prefer not to pay for the physical service.

iPhone artist creates cover of The New Yorker

It’s a good news for art lovers. Portuguese illustrator Jorge Colombo has created the art for June 1st cover of The New Yorker Magazine with iPhone app Brushes, helping the magazine make a quantum leap forward from it’s first issue released on February 17, 1925.

The original finger painting for the cover is made by Colombo in about an hour standing with his iPhone outside Madame Tussuad’s Wax Museum in Times Square.

Jorge uses the iPhone app Brushes to create works of art he calls iSketches, focused on the city of New York which he now sells online as limited edition prints. Though Colombo has worked for many years as a professional Illustrator, graphic designer and photographer, it’s his ultra-modern iPhone paintings that have delivered him into a period of personal renaissance. Colombo’s iPhone paintings carry a distinct impressionist style, passionately romanticizing New York City landscapes and architecture like a possessed lover.
