We’re just days away from Apple’s 2009 WWDC, which is expected to announce the new iPhone, but commenting the rumors about what Phil Schiller might be bringing on stage was unavoidable. This time from Nowhere Else‘s site, that already posted some interesting pictures.

SlashGear wrote:

The device pictured certainly seems to tick all of the obvious boxes tipped by pre-launch rumors. There’s the new chassis, new chrome-free finish and second slot – believed to be for a front-facing camera – on the top of the fascia.

However the headphone socket doesn’t appear to be on the bottom of the iPhone video, as shown in the last set of leaked photos, which suggests that somewhere along the line there are some fakes. According to Nowhere Else, a source at Orange France suggests that the new iPhone will come in 8, 16 and 32GB capacities and in both white and black finishes, will be 3mm smaller…

The UK’s leading independent mobile phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse, added four placeholders to their inventory list for new iPhone Video models today. It makes sense the official iPhone reseller like Carphone Warehouse had such information.

With new iPhone Video models expected this summer, in addition to the previously-announced 3.0 firmware, Carphone Warehouse appears to be gearing up for the change. A screenshot of its inventory system provided by a person known to have access to such information shows placeholders for both 16GB and 32GB iPhones in both white and black. They’re mixed in among the existing and previous iPhone models, having reportedly cropped up just hours ago.

So, which one do you like? A 32GB one in white or black? :-)

…we’ve been told that the next-generation iPhone will come in six versions: two storage capacities each for 3G, enhanced 3G (“3.5G/3.75G”), and mainland China versions of the phone, which will have the same size and general design of the current model, but with a less scratchable matte plastic body. Each of the three versions has been made to match the telecom systems of specific countries, so users in one country shouldn’t expect to have the option between a “slow iPhone” and “fast iPhone.” As before, you’ll get capacity options and different colors.

Apple will begin to allow downloads of movies and TV shows through the iPhone, according to the hottest rumor –complete with supposed screenshots– revealed just before a week-end.

The blogger wrote:

This revelation, (again at least to me) comes by way of an advertisement in the new ad supported version of the app Twitterfon released on 5/15/09. Three ads, stumbled upon by a geeky friend of mine who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of the powerful arms of the Apple legal department, scrolling across the top of the app were for ‘iTunes Movies’, ‘iTunes TV’ and ‘iTunes Movie Rentals’.

Unsubstantiated rumor? I don’t know, though on-device downloads would be nice. Currently, the only way to get video on an iPhone is by downloading it via iTunes on your computer and syncing with your device.

A new iPhone announcement has been tipped to take place on June 8th, at the WWDC 2009 keynote in San Francisco. Among the expected changes are more storage capacity, as hinted at by this listing, plus a faster processor and a higher-resolution camera (3.2-megapixels compared to 2-megapixels on the iPhone 3G). More battery life has also been suggested, perhaps as a side-product of Apple switching to an OLED touchscreen.

Update: The placeholder has now been removed by the carrier.

According to the report, OmniVision will also be supplying Apple with a 5-megapixel CMOS image sensor for use in a product set for release later in 2009. No details have been given about the nature of this product, which could be a further iPhone iteration or the much-rumored Apple MID.

The report is, obviously, uncorroborated by Apple themselves, and as with any iPhone supplier rumor should be taken with a pinch of salt. However it is fair to assume that the camera will be one of the main areas of change for the next-gen iPhone, which is expected to be announced in June this year.

As well as the touch-sensitivity, LG are apparently also working on a display coating that will reduce or eliminate “finger marking”, which was observed as a significant issue in the Apple prototype. The OLED iPhone will be joined by a similarly-featured new iPod touch.

The OLED displays are part of a reported $500m deal between Apple and LG for panel production up until 2013. Apple has previously been rumored to be sourcing multitouch panels for a netbook or slate-style tablet device.

With the removal of several apps from the App Store in the past few days, many are wondering if Apple is truly checking out these apps before authorizing them. But even more importantly, do they have a system in place to protect iPhone users from malicious apps? It looks like the answer is yes.

It seems there is a URL the iPhone refers to every once in awhile to check and see if any apps have been “blacklisted”:

https://iphone-services.apple.com/clbl/unauthorizedApps

This will not just remove malicious apps from the App Store. It will also disable apps you’ve bought and downloaded already. This seems to be a last resort sort of function that will be reserved for only the most dire cases.

So, this isn’t the first time a rumor involving a smaller iPhone has been circulating. In fact, about a year ago, talk was high that we’d be seeing an iPhone Nano for Christmas. But this time the DailyMail.co.uk is reviving the speculation.

This tiny iPhone would have the distinctive candy bar shape and would be targeted to the pay-as-you-go market, to which the iPhone and iPhone 3G were a bit too pricey. This is all fine and well, but one thing makes my suspicions rise and makes me want to call this rumor bogus:

One expert suggested the nano phone would have a touch wheel on the back and display on the front so that numbers would be dialled from behind.

Um, I just don’t see that happening, do you? Oh, and that photo is from when we all thought an iPhone Nano was coming last year. It’s fake, fake, fake.

In addition to the new iPhone 2.1 firmware, Apple also seeded a new version of iPhone SDK but it cannot be used to submit applications to existing AppStore.

Theirs is also a rumor that Apple has also added early Push Notification APIs that allows applications to process notifications in the background. If you followed iPhone Buzz’s livecast of WWDC 2008, you would have remembered that Apple had promised the availability of Push Notification by September time frame.

According to the rumor, half of the activation will be done in-store. This will include activation of the phone with your carrier, and choosing your rate plan. Once you get home, you’ll need to use iTunes to set up billing information so that you can purchase and download programs via the App Store.

The time has arrived and WWDC is finally here. There are a ton of last minute rumors that have surfaced, and it is only appropriate we round them all up and present them to you for your reading pleasure. Some of these rumors are look more solid than others, and some seem almost wildly unfounded, stick tight as we go through them.

Perhaps the biggest pre WWDC rumor is this, supposed spy shots of the 3G iPhone from CrunchGear. These ones do look much better than previous spy shots, but are they real? It is of course hard to tell with no one having seen the device to confirm, but they look as if they were possibly taken from marketing material. It appears as if these shots are real, the iPhone will have a front facing camera for video chat, and will come in an array of colors. The new iPhone does indeed appear thinner in the shots, but no confirmation of 32GB, that is if they are to be believed.

SlingPlayer is a popular video playing client that allows streaming from a home server, or SlingBox, to certain devices. Windows Mobile and Symbian are notable platforms with the support, and the iPhone with its generous screen seems a natural candidate. This feature is more than a rumor, and it thoroughly confirmed by a demo video making the rounds on the internet right now.

More of those mystery boxes have found there way into Apple stores the world over. With reports that Apple stores in London have received the mystery shipment. It is certainly not Apple’s style to risk having a worker unbox a 3G iPhone for 15 minutes in the spot light. NDA or not, someone has probably opened one of those boxes. Considering there are still no confirmed pictures of the 3G iPhone, most assume there are not 3G iPhone’s in those boxes.

Another interesting rumor is that Apple will launch iChat for the iPhone. It would have been a good idea to have something like this from the get go, after all iChat is a recognized application. The iChat application on the iPhone will make it familiar with Mac owners, it is all about branding in today’s world. Another interesting part of this rumor is that Windows is rumored to see iChat as well.

Don’t forget, we’ll be Live Blogging the Apple WWDC 2008 Keynote tomorrow, Monday June 9th at 10AM San Fransisco time, where we expect Steve Jobs to announce the new 3G iPhone. Make sure you join us at http://live.iphonebuzz.com/ to find out the news as it happens!
