It’s silly to think that iPhone could have caused the wireless networking problems Duke University experienced in the past week. So the truth finally came out with Duke admitted late yesterday that a Cisco wireless access point was the root cause of the problems that Kevin Miller, assistant director, communications infrastructure, with Duke’s office of Information Technology, had accused the iPhone for causing. Shame on you, sir.

“Cisco worked closely with Duke and Apple to identify the source of this problem, which was caused by a Cisco-based network issue,” said Cisco in a statement provided to Macworld. “Cisco has provided a fix that has been applied to Duke’s network and the problem has not occurred since.”

No cords gives you more options. You can have your treo in your pocket and listen to music while walking, jogging, whatever. Also it’s nice to be able to play your treo through an a2dp enabled car stereo. Music, Movies, Slingplayer audio all wirelessly over your car stereo.

So Apple, if you’re reading this, please include A2DP support on the iPhone in the next firmware update.

Freepress announced their own advocacy campaign to Free the iPhone. The site list basic information surrounding the issue including several videos, social networking profiles and a petition demanding both Congress and the FCC take action so customers can use any phones on any network carriers.

The petition:

Dear FCC and Congress,

The iPhone has set the stage for the future of mobile Internet–but bad policies allow companies like AT&T and Verizon to shackle great gadgets to their closed networks.

To free wireless Internet, the FCC and Congress must use the 700MHz spectrum auction to create an open network that gives consumers:

1. The freedom to use whatever device we want on any network.
2. The freedom to choose among many providers in a competitive wholesale marketplace.
3. The freedom to access any content or services we want through our devices.

Head on over and add your name to the petition if you believe the iPhone ought to be free from AT&T’s ball-and-chain.

One of the first things that the new CEO Randall Stephenson will be doing is putting more focus on the iPhone. According to Stephenson “We are putting a lot of money behind the launch as well, to drive traffic to the Apple stores and the AT&T wireless stores.”

He also hyped up the iPhone by saying “whatever your expectations are from this device, they are probably too low.” However, it is discerning to hear “I’ll be really disappointed if there’s not a shortage.” I’m pretty sure that he’ll be the only one disappointed if there’s not a shortage.
