iPhone 3G hacked for WiFi tethering to your laptop

Posted on 21 July 2008

Talk about frustrating: when you're in an area with decent coverage, the iPhone 3G can notch up some impressive data speeds.  AT&T, though, won't let you take advantage of all that speedy data by tethering the handset to your laptop; you're only meant to use the unlimited plan on the iPhone 3G itself.  Of course, we know that being told ... continued »

iPhone 3G dismantled: display & glass separate, battery not soldered

Posted on 11 July 2008

If you're looking to dismantle your iPhone 3G but you'd rather have some pieces slightly larger than dust left over at the end of the process, than iFixit should be your first port of call.  The famed strippers - by which I mean they strip down gadgets to their constituent parts - have already taken out their screwdrivers and splayed out ... continued »

iPhone 3G gets the Blendtec ‘Will it blend?’ treatment

Posted on 11 July 2008

Asking "but will it blend" may be an internet cliché by now, but there's still a shiver of half-glee, half-disgust to see a perfectly happy gadget turned to dust in one of Blendtec's industrial-strength tech-chompers.  And on iPhone 3G launch day, what better toy to get the blender treatment than Apple's new cellphone.  Check the video after the cut, and ... continued »

iPhone 3G sales surprise even Apple; iTunes leaves many unactivated

Posted on 11 July 2008

Apple may have learned from the first iPhone launch, but today's release of the iPhone 3G still didn't quite go smoothly.  Demand once again exceeded supply; I stopped by the Apple store in San Francisco this morning, where staff were surprised by the 300+ queue that had stretched around the block before the 8am opening.  Even before the doors opened, supervising ... continued »

Not only has the iPhone 2.0 software been released a day early for first-gen handset owners, bringing functionality like push email, but it's already been unlocked. The iPhone Dev Team have in fact been working on early builds of Firmware 2.0 since it went into beta testing, and reached an unlock and jailbreak solution before Apple even released the ... continued »

White iPhone 3G spotted in AT&T video

Posted on 09 July 2008

As surprises go, this one isn't exactly up there with the Da Vinci Code or the twist at the end of Finding Nemo (spoiler: he's found), but a recent video of an AT&T lady unpacking iPhone boxes in preparation for their Friday release does contain the first ever sighting of the white iPhone 3G's packaging.  And yes, as you might ... continued »

Rogers 6GB data plan add-on attempts to placate for $30 a month

Posted on 09 July 2008

After causing potential iPhone 3G customers to rise up in horror at the proposed costs for its data packages, Rogers Wireless is doing a whole lot of backtracking with a new, albeit-temporary, promotional plan.  Customers who sign up before the end of August will be able to choose a new, $30 monthly data plan on top of a standard voice ... continued »

iPhone 3G reviews

Posted on 08 July 2008

If the unboxing photos weren't enough for you, the usual trio of pre-release reviews for the iPhone 3G are finally out.  Walt Mossberg, Ed Baig and David Pogue have all been playing with Apple's much-anticipated cellphone update, and while there are still areas which fall short of rivals - notably video recording and MMS messaging - the consensus is that ... continued »

O2 UK discount iPhone 3G to free

Posted on 10 June 2008

Back when the iPhone first launched in the UK, many users were disappointed by the comparatively high price Apple and carrier O2 were charging.  One of the key messages from the iPhone 3G announcement, then, was the confirmation that the same $199 (or equivalent) entry point would be matched in all markets.  O2 have just unveiled their monthly contract details, ... continued »

Apple iPhone 3G hands-on roundup: the magic is still there!

Posted on 10 June 2008

Several hands-on iPhone 3G reports from after the WWDC 2008 Keynote are out, and as you might expect they're all saying pretty much the same thing.  Despite the few extra millimeters thickness over the old iPhone, Apple's newly slimmed edges disguise it well and the plastic - which is a concession to the numerous wireless radios packed inside - feels ... continued »

iPhone 3G - hang on, where’s the…

Posted on 09 June 2008

Say what you like about Steve Jobs, he knows how to put on a good show.  It was hard to keep track of the deafening applause during the WWDC 2008 keynote - in fact it seemed like every few minutes the iPhone 3G got a mini-ovation - and there's no doubting that it's an impressive device.  However, peering over the ... continued »
