You have always had to qualify for the 2 year contract to use an iPhone.* The only difference is that with the 2G you could apply for the qualification through iTunes while sitting at home while with the 3G you will have to do it in the store. In which case you already had qualified for their contract, and you would end up paying more than $30 a month for unlimited data. This new system is to make it harder to get an unlocked iPhone. AT&T is going to take unlocking much more seriously now that they are subsiding the price of the phone. Pete, this is not new. I am willing to shell out over $1000 to buy 5 new 3G phones for myself and my kids but we are not eligible for an upgrade until November. Not only that but Apple is hurting themselves by allowing AT&T to set the standards for their own devices. $30 for a data plan is a bunch of crap as well when the first generation IPhone data plans were $10 a month. Good luck AT&T I know you can kiss my money goodbye.
