The new iPhone has a cheaper upfront cost, but is more expensive in the long run (i.e,. the 2-year contract you sign up for.).

The extra required $30/month data plan, which does NOT include SMS, all on top of the regular voice plan. It all adds up.

Pete, this is not new. You have always had to qualify for the 2 year contract to use an iPhone.* The only difference is that with the 2G you could apply for the qualification through iTunes while sitting at home while with the 3G you will have to do it in the store.

The data plan for the 2G is $20, not $10. So yes, the 3g data plan is more money. But the phone is also $200 cheaper.

*unless you unlocked your iphone to go to a different carrier. In which case you already had qualified for their contract, and you would end up paying more than $30 a month for unlimited data. This new system is to make it harder to get an unlocked iPhone. AT&T is going to take unlocking much more seriously now that they are subsiding the price of the phone.

This is a bunch of bull*&^% when the first generation IPhone came out anyone could buy one and use it and was not based on the fact if your were eligible based on the standard 2 year service agreement. I am willing to shell out over $1000 to buy 5 new 3G phones for myself and my kids but we are not eligible for an upgrade until November. Not only that but Apple is hurting themselves by allowing AT&T to set the standards for their own devices. $30 for a data plan is a bunch of crap as well when the first generation IPhone data plans were $10 a month. Good luck AT&T I know you can kiss my money goodbye.
