One big surprised announcement at WWDC on June 11th is the offering of YouTube on the iPhone. At least that’s what Gizmodo seem to think. Why? YouTube has been going nuts converting all their videos to the H.264 codec. Guess what? The iPhone and iPods supports H.264.
Steve Jobs announced YouTube support for AppleTV at D conference, that iPhones will get it as well. Another source corroborates this theory.
Some may say EDGE will make it suck for watching YouTube videos. I say otherwise, because that’s what WiFi is for. Just look at the 3G-less N95, it didn’t stop Nokia from supporting YoutTube. Sure, it would be nice to have HSDPA, but for now, I’ll “take it as is” versus waiting another six months or a year just to have 3G on the iPhone.

you tube is just dumb. Honestly i don’t want to watch dumb videos. I’d rather have a t.v option or SKYPE. It’s going to be SKYPE I know it.

I don’t think it will be Skype – why? AT&T will never allow it. Allowing subscribers to make free calls on Skype infringes on AT&T’s revenue. So no way jose!
Like it or not, YouTube is massive so why not have it? Folks who wants to use can and those that don’t – don’t.
How is Youtube something that is useful on a phone? You watch a video of some dude getting kicked in the nuts wow great. Why not something useful. I mean seriously maybe putting in iDVD or real gps, or sticky notes, or some kind of dashboard, or something that is useful. it’s not useful, that’s what’s i’m trying to get at. I still think Skype is going to come along. That will put a big change of phones. Who’s to say a third party app like skype won’t make something for the iphone?
You make a solid point Brian. The bigger picture is YouTube has a mass appeal. It’s not anymore useful than Skype or the other apps you mentioned in your comment.
We sort of use YouTube to host our videos, but prefer our own flash player because it allows a much higher quality video over YouTube.
Beg to difer Skype would be much more useful than Youtube. I mean are you serious, to be able to skype someone on your skype list or skype out? I mean you could end up possibly with a 20 dollar ATT bill becuause you use wifi to make your calls? I don’t see how You Tube makes phone calls? I guess maybe i should say a tangible feature. I mean Youtube feature just doesn’t have much appeal for me, and i’m sure for a lot of people.
From what we’re hearing, the iPhone might not even have iChat out the door. So why would Apple include Skype before it’s very own app? Like I said, I understand your point and not make the inclusion of Skype any less important. I believe you’ve stated your case, so lets move on.
Ok I’m just ready for this to come already… Apple is probalby the best company at keeping secrets, and getting people to talk about apple in chats than any other company. They keep better secrets than our government. Though honestly I”m not buying one until a review come out.
Why do you need a widget for youtube?
If this thing is supposed to have a real browser, can’t you just go to the youtube website and watch the videos? I mean, doesn’t that make sense–or is the adding of the youtube widget just there to make up for the iphone’s shortcomings…namely GPS, Chat, 3G, support of Office doccuments.
